- EVERY complaint in the last year or so about big X360 games from the usual cocklords is in this game in spades : what resolution is this? Because there seems to be distortion and jaggies on everything. What is the frame rate? i started getting a headache due to the blur / general sub 30fps (albeit locked) of it all. Booo hoo halo has texture pop in - lol, HELLO UNCHARTED POP in! etc etc.

2xAA @ 1280x720 (720p mode)

2xAA @ 960x1080p (1080p mode)

30 fps with noticeable tearing (from what i saw in the demo).

what really happens : as you enter the pseudo mini game punch up, when you press the first punch he leans in and makes some wise crack joke like "Pirates like illegally entering things... i bet thats what you said to that boy in Guam, nyuk nyuk".

After this, the pirate is either effectively in a coma or WANTS to die rather than be anywhere near this buffon.

but doesn't he have nice hair!

 :rofl :rofl :rofl

and in my own opinion, hand to hand combat is not needed here.

Which one is chapter 3?

Also, the melee in the game is terrible.  Putting in the button presses has nothing to do with the animation happening on screen, so it feels totally out of sync.  Only thing I feel is borked in the game.

Eh, too be honest, I love Gears myself, but I like uncharted's gunplay a little better.  I went back and completed Gears again just for comparison, and it feels alot more confined.  Things like the whole mine cart ride and the shoot the kryll bats part annoyed the hell out of me.  There's alot of parts in uncharted where the action revolves around a large central area with two levels, and you find yourself always having to find new cover and doing quite a bit of twitch shooting and planning.  I did find the last boss part of uncharted to be a little dissapointing though.  If you enjoy Gears alot more though, its understandable, but I don't think uncharted is worse in any way.

Definately give the game a full run through ,because I feel like the beginning is there to ease the player into the rest of the sections.
I understand you don't really like the ps3 and everything, but don't like sfag hyperbole and everything ruin it for you.  Don't expect it to blow your understanding of game mechanics away.

what resolution is this? Because there seems to be distortion and jaggies on everything.

1280x720, 2xAA. i'm starting to think you prefer the look of sub-720p with no AA. and this preference may not be as strange as it immediately sounds -- develop a fondness for 480p no AA and you'll be a nintendo fan, in which you'll have lots of company

Is this info from Beyond3d? I"m at little skeptical about those guys after checking out the GT5 demo closely.  There's no way that the demo has 4xAA with all those jaggies that it has.

Eh, too be honest, I love Gears myself, but I like uncharted's gunplay a little better.

I agree, even though I'm not the biggest Gears fan.  The problem with Gears' cover system is that it feels too sticky, too regimented.  With Uncharted it seems much more fluid and enjoyable.  Like I said it took a little while for the game to really click with me but I got to the point where I couldn't wait for the next firefight...well, that is until the game throws that shit at you towards the end.

And yeah, the hand to hand combat sucks balls.  The only reason I've done it as much as I have is because I've been trying to get those achievements, otherwise I'd have no use for it.

Really DC, if the platforming in section 3 (and we're talking about the bit that takes you up above the uboat into where you can see that beautiful vista) and the fortress scale at the beginning of 5 do nothing for you, then stop playing because it won't be worth it.

And the resolution is 720p.

It's not that minor. At least not where I am. After all the 80/20 90/10 mixing I'd heard, I expected hardly any. And that's not the case.

You spend considerably more time shooting because it takes longer. But so far I find quite a bit of platforming and "variety."

and the jaggies in this game certainly do not look worse than halo 3 for me. I mean come on, the game is running at a standard hd resolution with AA. That's not true of Halo in either case (definitely the first, I can't remember the second).

Using resolution isn't the best way to argue about which game has more jaggies.  Factors like AA quality probably makes a bigger difference than 80p.

Hitler Stole My Potato said that the twist is in the 1st chapter anyways.  If you've seen the screenshots, you shouldn't be shocked to find out the main female character is a cheeseburger surprise.

Why would brightness/contrast calibration affect jaggies?

Uncharted has shimmery edges all over the place, but it definitely looks a ton better than Halo 3.

uncharted is a giant "best of" in the rendering/lighting cheats department. this is a carmackian orgy of faked-up lighting models and dx8 tricks. too bad they couldn't implement the one non-cheat everyone likes: vsync!

i do like the game, though, gross overstatements about the visuals and the godawful dialogue aside. i'm always a sucker for setpiece gun battles, and this game does them well. shame nate is so fuckin' unpleasant!

So i gave this some more time and i think the game REALLY picks up at chapter 5.

I'm actually enjoying myself now! *GASP*

Yeah, i know - i'm as surprised as anyone! ;)

Nice.  You of all people :) saying that it picks up means that it will be sooner, rather than later, when I give it a second shake.

Alright.  I'm officially done with the game.  I've got nothing left to unlock and after finishing it for the 3rd time, I've got no real desire to go back to it anytime soon.

PS3 to off.  Time to go pick up Mass Effect.

How far did you get with Ratchet?  I finally beat it yesterday and well, it was quite a disappointment.  I had said earlier that R&C gets better in the 2nd half and for the most part it does.  However, the final level has to be one of the most disappointing final levels ever.  I kept hoping that the last fight was just a prelude to something bigger but it didn't happen.

Hopefully, Sfags are more right about Uncharted than they were about R&C.

I left off after completing the dinosaur planet, right before I had to head back to the tourney planet.  I only moved on because something better came out, not because I got stuck or anything.  How much further did I have?

About 3-4 hrs.  You should check out the pirate level before setting it aside.  It's one of the prettiest and funnest levels in the game.   It comes up after the 2nd trip to the tourney planet and the 2nd trip only takes about 10-15 mins.

The girl was quite well done too.

Ya think?  I wanted to punch out her all of her freakin' teeth everytime she opened her mouth.  There's something....not right about her.

And the AI might not be revolutionary but I think it's at least a step above what you'd normally find in a third person shooting game.  They'll do enough interesting things to keep the action fresh and offer some replayability.  It's not Halo level stuff that's for sure and there's definately a lot of scripting but it's better than I expected.  Try putting on slow motion or super slow motion so you can take a look and appreciate at some of their actions.

BTW, what did you think about the "surprise"?  Not so much as a hokey story element but how they affected the gameplay?  Personally, I didn't really care for the switch in enemies.  Thankfully you don't have to put up with it for too long 'cause it's near the end but they just weren't fun to fight.  All the sudden the strategic battles that kept me going were gone and I was just spamming the trigger and facing in their general direction.

so yeah, when the
spoiler (click to show/hide)
rejected designs for the Chimera character models showed up
[close]
, it was all a bit WTF. Obviously the AI here goes straight out the window and , i swear, putting attack escapes on the up-down movement of the sixaxis when it is a one hit kill situation was a bad design choice. It did feel contrived and unnecessary, but still - didn't spoil my enjoyment.

Yeah, the sixaxis motion control bullshit reared its ugly head yet again.  The game is thankfully devoid of any of that crap through almost the entire thing (I don't count the log balancing since it's only happens like twice and it's impossible to screw up) but then these guys show up and I'm a shaking fool.  The reload time on the german machine gun is so long that I'm guaranteed to have at least one of those things on my back on the harder difficulties.  Sucks, sucks, sucks.

I HATE motion control.

There's a lot of bullshit in this game.  Enemies that dodge your fire - I mean, straight-up dodge the fucking bullets coming out of your gun.  Grenade spamming.  Glitchy camera at times (not often, but it's there).  Sticking to shit when you're trying to roll (hello, Gears of War).  For every bad thing there's something good, though, so I still like it, but I cannot overstate how much I hate having to start a section over again due to one mistake towards the end of it.  That shit should have ceased with PS1 games.
