I finally got around to trying out Sakura Taisen I and V on my PS2, only to discover they're dual layer DVDs, which don't work with Swap Magic. :'(

Time to go buy a Japanese PS2, I guess. $:-\$

Looking online, I could get a Japanese slimline for a lot less.

Sakura Taisen V Episode 0 works just fine, though.

I thought there was an updated version of Swap Magic that played Dual Layer DVDs?

But I don't know for sure; I got sick of that shit and having to own a Japanese and American PS2 a few years ago, bought a modded slimline, sold the rest off, and never looked back.

I've got Swap Magic 3.6, which is still the newest version. It doesn't support dual layer DVDs.

If all else fails, PM me. I'll get you a used JP slimline one for less than $100. I can't access it at work so I dunno how much it's going for, but I used NCSX (National Console Support) when I purchased modded consoles to play imports back in the day.

You didn't fail at all. I've been meaning to pick up a JP PS2 for some time, because even my launch FAT PS2 is still going strong, it is going to die one of these days.

Pink Godzilla (local import shop) has some JP PS2's for less than $100. I might have to wander down there tomorrow...

but anyway Im not sure it 3.8 can play dual layer dvds either, I just used swap magic to put hdloader on my ps2

my ps2 wont read anything and is currently broken otherwise id burn and test gow2 with is roughly 8gb

There aren't a lot of dual-layer JP PS2 games aside from Xenosaga and Sakura Taisen titles.

The ST games are probably dual-layer due to the amount of voice-acting they have. The ST1 remake has a ridiculous amount of voice-acting. It's pretty awesome.

I started playing through Sakura Taisen V Episode 0. I'm guessing I'd enjoy it more if I'd played the previous main line ST games. It's probably a good thing that Sega decided against bringing this over to North America, as it probably would've killed the Sakura Wars franchise over here before it ever got started.

STV Ep. 0 was just supposed to be a very silly introduction to the main female lead of STV, to sort of build up hype for the franchise's NYC "restart." It plays absolutely nothing like any of the other ST games.

It's supposed to have a lot of references to previous ST stuff...for example, one of the main bad guys in Ep. 0 was one of the bad guys from the ST movie, the enemy mechas were built by an American corporation to replace the Tokyo Hanagumi in the ST movie, etc.

Oh, I know it's nothing like the other ST games. I just remember Sega talking about how it would be their chance to introduce the games to a North American audience.

I've never seen any of the Sakura Taisen anime shows/OVAs/movies... might want to get around to that one day.

Skip the TV series (which just recaps the events of the first game in a very uninteresting way)and watch the OAVs, which are wonderful little slice-of-life episodes, each one devoted to one or two specific characters. There's a box that has all the Tokyo-cast OAVs, you can probably find it for really cheap nowadays.

The manga is also really good.
