Death Proof: First half pretty boring, second half pretty awesome

2nd half: excellent car chase, amusing ending

it was decent but I don't really see why tarantino couldn't release this as seperate from grindhouse.  maybe I don't appreciate the grindhouse culture enough.

I think you have to be awesome in order to "get" Death Proof.

Death Proof is my movie of the year because it was a unique experience and I can watch it over and over and it gets better every time.

Death Proof is pretty great.  The extended cut is even significantly better.  I think a lot of people were just a bit let down because they went in expecting something a bit different, which is understandable given how the Grindhouse movies were hyped/marketed.

I didn't think the extended cut is better. It has weird pacing issues and unnecessary scene additions. The only great addition was the lap dance.

I had heard lots of great things about the movie, but i just thought it was a bit... shit.

I'm not surprised.  I've found that Tarantino flicks are hate it or love it for most people.  I liked it overall although there were some parts that got boring.  The 2nd half was definitely more entertaining in terms of both characters and action.   

TVC, I've heard from quite a few people that the theatrical release was better because it was more streamlined.  For example, the chick doing the lap dance wasn't hot at all.  I could have done without that part and all the drawn out stuff leading to it.

The additional scenes don't really create any pacing issues, and the addition to the first portion totally makes it a lot better.

The drawn out stuff leading to the lap dance is IN THE THEATRICAL CUT, btw, Smooth.  Just the lapdance isn't.

There's lke 5-10 minutes new footage, tops, and it doesn't feel out of place in the slightest.

The black and white scene felt too long to me.

Also, the addition of the scene where Mike is in the car at the beginning, looking at the pictures of the girls kinda ruins the movie. The great thing about the theatrical release was that you weren't sure he was a crazy mofo until that chick gets in his car and he's like WHICH WAY ARE YOU GOING?  TOO BAD HAUHAUHAUA. That scene ruins the build up, because you already know his character and what he wants to do with these girls.

The black and white scene felt too long to me.

Funny, I thought that scene shouldn't have been left out of the movie in the first place.  It better establishes who the second group of girls are than anything else in the second half.  It clearly establishes it, rather than having to piece together who they are from the following two scenes, which give you an incomplete and, at best, muddled view of who they are.

Also, the addition of the scene where Mike is in the car at the beginning, looking at the pictures of the girls kinda ruins the movie. I don't think this is a big deal either.  It was never not evident he was the "bad guy."

I don't think the lapdance scene is supposed to be sexy.  It's supposed to be a creepy sort of misogynistic scene.  The girl doesn't want to be doing it.  It's creepy and kind of sad.

Well don't get me wrong. I loved most of the black and white scene, but once Rosario goes into the convience store I was like,"Hurry the fuck up!"

As for the Mike being evidently the bad guy, I didn't know the first time I watched because I was in the dark regarding the movie. I didn't know what it was about, or anything, and it blew me away.

I dunno, I think the convenience store serves a multipurpose of telling us who the second group of girls are, establishing what sort of people they are, and showing a bit of the mundanity of these types of girls being in a fucking hich area.

Fourteen months later, Lee Montgomery (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Abernathy Ross (Rosario Dawson), and Kim Mathis (Tracie Thoms) are traveling through Tennessee and stop at a convenience store where Mike has stationed himself. When Kim goes inside, Lee moves into the driver's seat and starts listening to her iPod with Abernathy still trying to sleep in the backseat. Mike then gets out of his car and begins playing with Abernathy's bare feet which are hanging out of the car window. When she wakes up, Mike pretends he bumped into her while looking for his car keys. He gets into his car and takes off. Abernathy goes into the convenience store to pick up the month's issue of Allure, which features Lee. Abernathy catches one last glimpse of Mike's car speeding off, which the other two don't notice, before the three depart.

At worst, it's telling you things that are ultimately not needed.  At best, it's extra background.  It doesn't fuck with pacing either way because it happens right after the first segment ends.

Well, I feel the scene in the restaurant did that good enough so I didn't really feel all of that was necessary. It does make them owning Mike that much better though, because they know he was following them for ages, and they finally got his ass.

I think we can both agree that the extra scene with the two coppers added to the movie a lot. At least I do.

The convenience store scene also served the purpose of building some suspense.  After the brutality of the 1st half, the viewer expects something wicked to happen to the next group of girls.  Instead, Mike's actions are creepy but completely harmless and also quite funny.
