Angel isn't the Shakespearean drama I thought it was
« on: November 23, 2007, 10:11:38 PM »
Maybe I should have taken the warning of my realization that there are about 20 actually good episodes of Buffy.   Maybe I should have not started with the first season of Angel, whch appears to be just about completely terrible.  I don't know what to do.  Someone tell me where I need to go to start getting to the good Angel.  Season 1 is like. . .D- quality Buffy episodes.  It should be titled Buffy: Twilight Princess.

season 2 and season 5 are all good stuff. 1 is definitely the weakest.

that said, i'd still put the worst of angel season 1 over the worst of buffy -- i.e. all of season 6 and a good chunk of 7.

I dunno.  That Doyle guy's accent is ALMOST as bad as Angel's fake bad Irish accent.

Oh god, you are tempting me to pull out an ep where there's a flashback.  He sounds like a leprechaun!

Season 1 is alright, I think it was really handled like a spin off (where it really hinders it). The show definitely starts to come into its own and each actor hones their characters and each one develops a distinct quirk.

Only 20 good Buffy episodes?  Man, that's harsh.

I hope you at least like "Bewildered, Bothered and Bewitched" and "Once More With Feeling".

I haven't watched much Angel at all, but I'm sure I'll bite sooner or later with that boxed set approaching $80-100 levels.

Season one of Angel is easily the worse. It only gets better from there (the final season fucking rocks). The things they do to some of the characters is downright evil. Going back on Buffy I've noticed it hasn't aged all that well. It helps that the show was self aware of it's own campiness and drama. Even in the bad episodes of Buffy (and sometimes Angel) there are a couple of good lines/moments that would make me laugh.

Also, am I the only one that liked how dark the last season of Buffy got? Even with the shitty teen squad and lackluster finale there's some pretty cool moments throughout the season (Caleb's girl obsession, conversations with The First, Giles' outbursts, Buffy's nervous breakdown).

Buffy died when Seth left.

Angel rocks once you get whatshisface the bar owner, Wesley starts to go badass, Cordellia stops being annoying and Fred wets my pants. Gun is pretty solid through out.

Yeah, Wesley was easily the most intricate character of the entire Buffy and Angel run. What he turned into in the end was the polar opposite of what he was when he appeared in season 3 of Buffy. Everytime I think about that character I get shivers down my spine.

I dont' want to spoil it for TVC (unless he already knows) but the event that actually turns Wesley around is fucken awesome.

My sentiments exactly. That he has somewhat of a rabid fanbase who actually refer to his shit as "Whedonverse" lol, hurts my heart.

Only 20 good Buffy episodes?  Man, that's harsh.

I was guesstimating.  If people think it's worth it, I will go through my Buffy set and pick out what I deem good episodes.

Note that my criteria will be good episodes that stand on their own, without me having to spend time "getting in" to the series.  Note that this criteria WILL NOT exclude most arc episodes, though.  Most of those can be viewed on their own merits.  At most there are maybe 2-4 episodes per season that are arc dependent.  AT MOST.
