TVC15 presents: The Only Good Buffy Episodes
« on: November 25, 2007, 02:11:17 AM »
If I were to put in my Buffy DVDs today, these would be the only episodes I'd watch.

1. Welcome to the Hellmouth
2. The Harvest
3. The Pack
4. Angel

5. School Hard
6. Halloween
7. The Dark Age
8. What's My Line Part One
9. What's My Line Part Two
10. Ted
11. Surprise

12. Band Candy
13. The Wish
14. Gingerbread
15. The Zeppo (BEST EPISODE CONTENDER)
16. Bad Girls
17. Doppelgangland

18. The Freshmen
19. The Harsh Light of Day (Spike + Harmony == teh awesome)
20. Fear Itself
21. Pangs (Possible BEST EPISODE CONTENDER)
22. Something Blue (BEST EPISODE CONTENDER)
23. Hush
24. A New Man
25. Superstar (BEST EPISODE CONTENDER)
26. Restless

27. Out of My Mind (Spike + Harmony == teh awesome)
28.Fool for Love (brief period when Spike was the best part of the show)
29. Triangle (Anya!  Troll god!)
30. The Body (Call me sappy, but this episode was gold until the ending)
31. Intervention (Sorry people, the Buffybot was awesome and hilarious)

32. Life Serial
33. Tabula Rasa
34. Doublemeat Palace (some of it is good for bad reasons, but still)

35. Selfless
36. Him
37. Storyteller

37 episodes.  I said 20 in the Angel thread, so I was a bit off.

The Twilight Zone would be a bit less fair.  I'd have to watch all the episodes first.  I don't actuallyt hink I've seen all of them.  I skip most of the hour long ones and the ones I know to be bad, and during my chronological viewing, after getting the set, I learned by the third season that the hit-to-miss ratio is waaaaaaaaaay off for that show and started skipping shit.

I'd add Nightmares and Prophecy Girl from season one. Some Assembly Required, Lie to Me, Bewitched, Bothered, andBewildered, Passion, I Only Have Eyes For You, and Becoming, Part Two from season two. To be honest I love everything about season two. And from season three: Dead Man's Party, Earshot and Helpless.

Some episodes I considered adding (including like Earshot) but I couldn't remember if they were actually good, or if I was just remembering them because they had an easily memorable premise.

I liked the premise of an episode like Out of Mind, Out of Sight. But it really isn't very good. Even though, as a loser-child I could relate the episode is badly done.

edit: I used to think The Zeppo was the best episode. However after watching it recently I no longer think so. I suppose the humor of the episode didn't hold up for me.

I was surprised that 4 was the season I picked the most episodes from.  I knew I liked it more than most, but. . .

Season four had a lot of great episodes, but overall I really didn't like the season, nor the direction of Buffy at that point.

Does anyone think they killed the master off way too early?  I thought he was really cool as a bad guy.  I wasn't a huge Buffy fan, but the show was cool.  I watched till Season 4 or so

I think the producers and writers thought the same thing, Christopher, since The Master frequently came back in flashbacks and what not.  I agree with you, too.  Aside from the dumb name, he was awesome.

Didn't they think that Buffy might be canned? Isn't that why they killed him off so soon?

I never liked him much. He was almost as lame as the Anointed One.

I liked him.  I dig the actor that plays him too.  I think if he had survived, he probably would have developed better.  It's not like season 1 is that good outside of the campy stories, so I think he would have evolved with the rest of the show.

The character wasn't very terrifying or menacing. I think what really made me dislike him was the terrible makeup. It looked like they bought a costume kit from WalMart. Sure he possessed a number of interesting powers, but they were never really exploited. I'm sure they could have come up with some interesting ways for him to use his psychic abilities.

Did you ever see the unaired Buffy pilot, Malek?  With different, ugly Willow?

Nice.  I was just looking for that and I couldn't find it.  I like Joss's comments:

IGNFF: Is the presentation ever going to make it to DVD?
WHEDON: Not while there is strength in these bones.
IGNFF: Well, I mean, it's one of the most heavily bootlegged things on the Internet.
WHEDON: Yeah. It sucks on ass.
IGNFF: Yeah, it does, but it's sort of that archival, historical perspective...
WHEDON: Yeah, I've got your historical perspective.
IGNFF: It would take it off the bootleg market...
WHEDON: Ah, I don't – what are you going to do?
IGNFF: Put it on the DVD.
WHEDON: Not me.[1]

It really isn't much worse than some of the episodes from season one. I love the season... but the cheese factor is off the charts.

I think that's why season 1 holds up and seasons 5 to 7 don't.  The show was fun, and the continuity was fun, but the more it took itself seriously, the more it sucked.

A show about a ninety pound girl named Buffy who fights the undead can't take itself too seriously. Because the audience won't!

But they did!  Actually, I am probably off.  What killed the show wasn't leaning towards seriousness (some of the best bits were serious), but giving in to FANSERVICE (OMG BUFFY + SPIKE!  OMG FAITH IS BACK! OMG EVIL WILLOW!)

Fanboys take everything seriously!
See Star Wars fanboys and nintards.

The fanservice was bad, but I got tired of seeing Sarah cry by season three. There's nothing wrong with drama, but there is something wrong with endless melodrama.

I also want a girl named Buffy to be a little more happy-go-lucky.

Yeah, I think Buffy belongs to the curious canon of TV and movies that are quality despite having an undeserving main character.  See also Kingdom of Heaven.

I actually liked the Buffy character at first; and as a horny teenager wanted to fuck her brains out. However she never seemed to grow. That is, whenever it appeared that she learned something or was making a change im her life, it never really stuck. If anything she devolved into a pathetic twat.

I guess the message is that people do change, just not for the better.

SEE OLD PEOPLE

That's realism, though, Malek.  As a student of philosophy, you should know by now that women are just fundamentally dumb.

There are many paths to poverty. Philosophy is but one of them.
