A new report from Greenpeace has given Nintendo a zero/10 on environmental friendliness, the worst performance for any company ever ranked by the environmental activist organization.Greenpeace’s Guide to Greener Electronics gave Nintendo zeros across nine categories related to the use of toxic chemicals and recycling, while Sony Ericsson scored at the top of the 18-company list.Greenpeace criticized Nintendo for poor management and communication regarding harmful chemicals both from an internal standpoint and within the company’s supply chain, as well as not specifying the timeline for a phase-out of vinyl plastic (PVC) and brominated flame retardants (BFRs). Other criticisms stemmed from Nintendo simply not providing a policy or information about environmental issues.Nintendo was ranked at the bottom of the global list at number 18.The US website for the Kyoto, Japan-based game maker states, “Nintendo is very concerned with doing our part to help preserve the environment. We're always researching new products and procedures to make our products and operations as environmental-friendly as possible.”Nintendo said that it does recycle products like paper, report covers, aluminum cans and glass, and limits the use of certain harmful products in its packaging for games.The Guide to Greener Electronics says that by switching to greener practices, companies will cause less harm to the environment and prevent harm to employees and nearby communities.Microsoft fared only slightly better than Nintendo, ranking in at 16 with a score of 2.7. The Seattle-based company performed “partially good” in the areas of chemicals management and timelines for PVC and BFR phase-outs, but fell short of "good" because of the 2011 phase-out timeframe. A poor takeback policy also hurt Microsoft’s score.Joint venture Sony Ericsson, which specializes in mobile products, scored a 7.7 out of 10 with further improvement of the reporting of mobile phone recycling and elimination of PVC.
