December: What are you listening to? (no techno allowed)
« on: November 29, 2007, 03:31:12 PM »
I'm on a hip hop binge

How many vet rappers get less respect than Ghostface? Dude is still releasing quality shit, which can't  be said of the more respected NY cats like Nas and Jay (although American Gangster isn't bad, but isn't particularly good either). The production has a great 70s feel and is consistent through all 24 tracks, but more importantly the lyrics are ace. Is anyone better at painting lurid street tales that jump out the headphones and into your imagination? His storytelling is almost untouchable.

I've gone from really liking this album to just loving it in a month. There are so many standout tracks, so many classic lines, so many amazing beats.

DOOM's classic debut. It's much more focused than Mm Food (which is definitely a great album too), and features fewer carton skits.

It leaked last week. Overall it's rather...average at best. I haven't payed much attention to it recently. The production is rather weak overall, and it just doesn't seem like Wu; there are too many choruses, too much singing, etc. I'm not saying it's some sell out, but it's just meh. Despite that there are some great songs:

Meth tears the track up. In fact, all his stuff on this album is great. He still sounds hungry to me

Peep this album out, it's probably my favorite hip-hop album of 2007. And I never really cared that much for Aes' hyper-verbose style, either... but I'm really feeling his tales this time out and the production is fucking incredible.

As far as instrumental hip-hop is concerned, ain't nobody fucking with my man Thes One.

Absolutely incredible prog mix from Eelke Kleijn. And why no techno (not my genre of choice but still one I listen to and I have a number of tech-house and mnml mixes downloaded on my work comp)? That's lame, not everyone listens to backpacker rap you know? :P

really?  I have listened to very little else in the past three weeks.  helped me through work hell.  :heartbeat

You know how couples have "songs" or "albums" that define them? Well, my wife and I have Heart. The songs might not all be happy uplifting love songs, but it's our album. Our first date was at a Broken Social Scene & Stars show, we played Elevator Love Letter at our wedding, and even sent the band a wedding invitation.

Stars are awesome.

That is so sweet.  I love hearing stuff like that, since it reminds that I'm at heart a useless sentimentalist.  Me and my wife have Air's 10,000, The Girl/Boy song (which was the reccessional at our wedding), and A Quiet Little Place in the Country (which was what we listened to the first time we had breakfast together).

Our first dance was to Bright Eyes' First Day of My Life, but Elevator Love Letter was played while we came in at our reception. The highlight of the wedding, music wise, though, was all of our friends singing along with us to Neko Case's Thrice All American (the song is about Tacoma, WA where we all went to college).

This is an odd question, but what was the last song you heard before you got hitched? My best man and his wife drove me to the church in Omaha, and the last song I heard was Johnny Cash's Ring of Fire. I was absolutely high on life and sang at the top of my lungs to the entire song.

This album is a pretty big disappointment. It is Rilo Kiley’s most polished effort to date, yet their worst. Under the Blacklight is an unwelcome departure from their last album. They sound like just another boring band. The lyrics are bad, repetitive, and dull. The California porn industry theme is idiotic, and at the same time disingenuous. I doubt that Jenny has even seen a full-length porno. I think the Osmonds could do a more convincing porn themed album.

Though the material is sub-par, Lewis' voice sounds as good as ever. And we are only subjected to a single Blake Sennett song. The songs "Silver Lining", "Under the Blacklight", "15", "The Angels Hung Around", and "Give a Little Love" are pretty enjoyable. The rest of the songs are boring or bad. I'm on the fence with Moneymaker.

I give the album  :sp0rsk1 :sp0rsk1 out of five.

The album fails to be either engaging or sound good as background music.  It is upfront enough to demand that you hear it, but it then fails to grab you.  Like bad porn, so it isn't a total conceptual failure I guess.
Like a porno, most of the songs sucked major cock.

Since her band's last record (2004's More Adventurous), Rilo Kiley frontwoman Jenny Lewis has taken her one-time child-actress, pop-star status up a level, as her charismatic solo effort, Rabbit Fur Coat, was one of the top recordings of 2006. But those who feared she'd abandon her long-time mates to do it alone will be instantly comforted by a collection of songs so zestful and extravagantly produced that no less than four emerge tailor-made for pop radio. After the opener "Silver Lining" feeds off George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord" riff and some cajoling handclaps, Lewis reels in the glee with "Close Call," where the lavishness of the melodies outweighs the foreboding lyrics. The bouncy "Breaking Up," with the sun-splashed chorus "feels good to be free," is so absolutely California-beach perfect, it's ripe for a million-selling soda commercial, and then Lewis saves her vocal best for a trifecta near the end: Dusty Springfield soul ("15"), dancefloor power pop ("Smoke Detector"), and meltaway folk ("The Angels Hung Around"). Did it take their angel leaving the nest for a spell for Rilo Kiley to make their definitive record? The argument is futile, but the music is sublime. --Scott Holter

The soundtracks for the Ian Curtis and Bob Dylan biopics are both fantastic.  I'm Not There has a host of suprisingly well-done covers (maybe not so surprising if you've had a glimpse at the musicians in the back-up bands) of not-so-well-known Dylan tunes and Control features some of my absolute favorite songs from the artists included and a decent Joy Division cover from The Killers.

I still haven't seen either of these movies. :(

Really? They're the greatest band in the world, so you're defying logic. You shouldn't defy logic.

These guys agree: http://www.drownedinsound.com/articles/2307150

Alan McGee, father of Creation Records--something that makes him more relevant to music than any of you will ever be--agrees in his article titled "How did the Super Furry Animals become so underrated?": http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/music/2007/10/how_did_the_super_furry_animals_become_so_underrated.html

Even this nobody blogger agrees with me: http://soundbites.typepad.com/soundbites/2005/09/super_furry_ani.html

They even have two album entries on Metacritic's all-time Top 100. How many album entries do you have on anything? The only list you rank on is "enjoy bell wood's clown list."

Even their last two albums, which I consider bad relative to their past masterpieces (all of which I rate 10/10), are better than anything you like.

Ok, I've had this for two days and it's now my second favorite album of the year - behind only In Rainbows. Modern day Wu classic, and SO much better than 8 Diagrams. "Yolanda's House" (featuring Meth and Rae) may be the rap song of the year

RZA lost  ::)
