Status on my diet if anyone cares...
« on: November 29, 2007, 05:31:14 PM »
So the other day, I bought new clothes for the first time since i started my diet.  I had noticed small things like having to cut a new hole in my belt because it didn't fit anymore and my pants being a little looser.

but I went to buy new pants on tuesday and I picked up a few pair to see which fit best and apparently i am six (6!!!) sizes smaller and even those are a little large.  :)

What type of diet are you on? Low cal? Low carb? Atkins? Ornish?

I care :)

Can you tell me more about your diet?  I've dropped about 15 pounds since July, but I'm trying to lose another 15 more.  I've recently switched to doing a lot more free weights and heavier lifting, so I'm kind of working backwards...but I have plenty of fat too burn still.

None of those.  Just good old eating right and exercise.

I stopped eating fast food.  Started eating only fresh/organic food.  Laid off of sweets and sodas.

Just used basic common sense for what's good for me.

Ex: An egg and some toast in the morning is obviously better than a mcmuffin.

Also, i cut down portions a lot and began to eat more throughout the day.  i have between 5 and 7 small meals a day.

I also began to get a lot more sleep.  instead of 4-5 hours every night and heavy napping after work, I sleep at least 7 hours and don't nap when i get home.  Instead I exercise so I'm tired enough to pass out early.

Sounds great.  Good for you.  I lost 30 pounds with a similar strategy.  I've gain 15 back, though :-\.  Going to culinary school hasn't helped.

It probably is just muscle mass.  Muscle weighs more than fat, right?

Just keep an eye on your calories. I've never had any trouble losing weight. When I wanna shed I just eat 1500 cals a day on a weekday, 2000 on the weekends. Add jogging and weight training to that and it melts off.

Can you give an example of what you usually eat all day? I actually need to gain weight but I do need to start eating better.

Diets like Atkins don't really work in the long term for most people.  The problem with Atkins or low calorie diets is that your metabolism gradually gets slower with the dieting.  So once you start eating normal again, your weight will balloon even faster than before.  The best thing is to do what Mupes is doing by cutting some unhealthy foods and exercising.

Also, tea seems to do a good job of keeping the weight down.  I don't look fat despite eating whatever I want (2500 to 4000 cals/day) and not exercising in the last 18 months since school started.  Many of my friends are surprised that I could eat that much junk and still not be super obese.  Part of it could be due to genes, since everyone on my mother's side is super skinny.  I also think part of it is due to the 5-7 cups of tea I drink everyday.  There's some scientific research that suggests tea can increase one's metabolism although I'm not sure how accurate that research is.

Really?  what school are going to?
The Institute of Culinary Education, formerly Peter Kump's Cooking School in NYC.

It's a great school, but currently I don't know if I want to pursue the restaurant route.  Starting at $10 an hour is not something I look forward to or willing to try.  Private cheffing is more lucrative and a better option if you want you have a life outside work.

Can you give an example of what you usually eat all day? I actually need to gain weight but I do need to start eating better.
I eat the most (and worst) during breakfast.  But as long as you're not eating something outrageous for breakfast (fast food, i'm looking at you), then you will probably be ok.

This morning I got a fresh over easy egg, piece of toast, piece of bacon and a banana for breakfast with some orange juice.

In about 1 hour, I'll have an apple.

For lunch, I'll probably get a club sandwich (no mayo) with a pickle and some water.

About an hour after lunch, I'll eat an orange.

And then for dinner I'll probably make me a leg of chicken with some some sort of green on the side with water.

I also take some fruit and oats or something to munch on in between these.

When you eat this way, you tend to get hungry more often (obviously), but you are also satisfied by food more easily as opposed to all the additives in fast food and processed food that keep you craving for more.  And after you eat this way for a while, it makes fast food pretty disgusting and will fuck up your stomach horribly.  If I eat fast food one night for dinner, then I won't be hungry until mid day the next day.

When the divorce shit started happening in May, I noticed that my appetite dropped massively, and after a couple of weeks I'd shed a load of weight. With more stress since then, and being able to control my appetite these days, things have been going well... at the start of the year I was about 88kg, and now I'm hovering between 75-77kg.

The most important thing for me is to check my weight on a regular basis so it doesn't get too out of control. Every now and then I'll pig out if I'm feeling really depressed about something, but I tend to recover pretty quickly. I went back up to 78kg before the Underworld gig last night, and when I got back in the morning I was 75kg again.

The most important thing I've found helping is cutting out soda. I always drank diet soda as it was, but I think either the alternative sweeteners or all that CO2 must have been helping me keep the weight on. I also used to eat a choc bar after every meal, just about, and I've stopped that, pretty much.

I really need some new clothes though. I have to wear belts on everything  :-[

Oh yeah... good job Moops :)
Thanks!

Same thing happened with me after my divorce, but after I got over my funk I packed on some weight.  I'm pretty much rid of it now.

As for before and after pics, I'm saving those for when I'm back to my desired physique.  I've been taking pictures every few weeks for my official "it's fucking gone" thread.

I've gained about five pounds since I stopped jogging. With work and the cold weather outside I don't know what do. Cutting back on eating is not an option as it would deprive me of one of the few things that brings me pleasure in life.
