So now I think I'm in love with Mass Effect
« on: November 30, 2007, 01:19:11 PM »
When I first started playing, I found the combat clumsy, slow and difficult.

But after I began leveling up and learned more about the battle system and well... got better.... I FUCKING LOVE THE GAME.

Omg using lift and then going apeshit on them with the shotgun is incredible.

:bow :bow

and how come my assault rifle still says "untrained"??? how do i get trained??

what character class are you?  some classes cannot train certain weapons.  others can only be trained by unlocking the ability through your primary weapon.  for example, as a vanguard, i need to level up pistol skills to unlock shotgun.

I have a vanguard.  but when I began using shotgun it didn't show as "untrained".  then again, it was a long while before i tried anything other than the pistol.  i haven't trained any in the shotgun, but i unlocked it after upgrading my pistol stats.

so again, i'm confused after i thought i had it   haha

unfortunately vanguards can only use pistols and shotguns.  you're right though, shotgun is not labeled as "untrained" because it is a weapon that vanguards can equip.

oh ok.  so i will never be "trained" on the other weapons?

it's ok.  after doing some spectre training, my accuracy is pretty incredible.

after i got used to the game, it's soooo much easier.

I bought this LCD for my Xbox 360. and I do recommend it for you!

specs:
20" WideScreen
3000:1 contrast ratio
1680x1050 native resolution (though i've set it up for 720p in my 360 through VGA Cable)
DVI (HDCP support) (just in case you'll use Xbox 360 HDMI or PS3 HDMI in the future through a DVI->HDMI cable also for Blu-ray/HD-DVD playback)
2ms response time

and use external 5.1 speakers like the Logitech X-530

that's the cheapest alternative to the expensive HDTVs.

I think the game looks great (sans filter and blur... also when the textures have loaded in) but the gameplay its just poop

I finally finished it last night and I'm already ready for another go.  The combat feels clunky at the beginning but after you start to understand how it works and your characters get better weapons and abilities everything starts to click.  IMO, combat is now the most enjoyable part of the game.

And even with all the texture pop-up, V-sync issues, and slowdown I still say this is one of the most amazing looking games I've ever seen.  Sure it ain't pretty 100% of the time but there are a ton of moments in the game that are visually fucking mindblowing.  Some of the stuff towards the end.....omfg.  If/when Bioware releases it on the PC, I hope they'll be able to iron out all the little graphic glitches 'cause right now it's a masterpiece with just a little dirt around the frame.

Anyway, GOTY for me.  Hands down.  I really can't remember when the last time I enjoyed a RPG as much as Mass Effect.  Morrowind maybe?  I don't know.  I LOVE this game.

have you mastered the vehicle control yet?  if not, then it will NOT be enjoyable.  That turned me off of the vehicle for a while and the controls for it are complete ass.  but after you get it down, it makes driving the vehicle decent.  Plus, the vehicle has been a lot less necessary over my past few missions.  it's only been to drive real short distances.

Don't worry about going to every anomaly or ore site. You don't get anything for completing those collection quests in toto. You get a bit of XP and credits for each one, but...no bonus for getting 20/20 etc. If you focus on completing your mission objectives immediately, you'll enjoy the sections a lot more.

Futz with the camera as necessary. The controls are bullshitfully camera relative.

Be sure to use Right Bumper for the cannon!

Don't be afraid to exit the vehicle and take enemies out on foot if they are regular human/geth units. Take out turrets in the Mako.

Carry a book with you to read when you hide behind a hill and let your shields recharge in the middle of firefights.

they do, slowly (~5 minutes from zero to full). you can also repair direct vehicle damage using 15 omnigel (though not shields, sadly--that almost seems a bug).

also, stay FAR AWAY from Thresher Maws, if you get too close they one-hit you.

DON'T DO VEHICLE COMBAT.

YOU EARN 50% LESS XP IF YOU FIGHT IN THE MAKO. The only time you should use a vehicle is if you're fighting those damn turrets you normally can't take down or are too fast for you, or those huge ass worms.

yeah, the parts where you drive with the Mako vehicle were too long, too boring and too repetitive, and uneventful for the most part, along with practically all the scouring on uncharted planets

character development was seriously lacking, along with game lenght, and the quality of side quests... I also found the game ridiculously easy with a soldier as a main protagonist

Mass Effect still does some things very nicely, especially when it comes to creating a compelling sci-fi universe and emulating the presentation of sci-fi TV series... in the end it's a satisfying quest to experiment even if your average quality computer RPG shames it when it comes to content

8.5/10 sounds about right

Just got to Noveria. Game is fuckawesome. But boy do the technical issues pop up (pardon the pun) more and more. Ive already had the game freeze on me (first time my 360 has ever frozen), and the main Citadel area's framerate was like a slideshow at times.

Mass Effect is good 10 hours in it sounds like, once youve learned how to play how the crappy combat system wants you to.
