So Wii Fit Came Out Today.
« on: November 30, 2007, 11:22:56 PM »
But this is all I can think of.

Actually I kinda want to buy one, but I'm sure they're all sold out everywhere.  I saw Groo's thread on that other board and couldn't believe people were lining up for this thing!   :o

Gotta be honest, I kind of want to buy it.  It's good for the days when it's too fucking cold and snowing or raining like crazy, like it always does around here.

They had SHITLOADS of them at the biggest electronics store in town.  SHITLOADS.  And no one was buying them.

It's not bad, not bad at all.  Very much like Wii Sports, except that you really CAN get some exercise out of the game.  I don't see the yoga stuff helping too much, but the push-ups and especially the jogging (which doesn't even make use of the balance board, by the way...just the Wiimote; it could have easily been included with Wii Sports) can certainly make you sweat if you do them long enough.  The thing is, it's not like you need to spend $80 to do push-ups and run in place.  :P  But since it's a "game," it's more fun.  The balance games were amusing, too.  I totally suck at balancing and the game said my balance level is like that of a 51 year-old man!  My wife got 39.   :lol

My wife loved it, especially the balance game stuff, and she's very much a non-gamer, which is a sign of success amongst the masses.  She liked Wii Sports too...although we only played that a few times before it got old.    I can see this lasting longer...but for how long is the question.  For me, between this and DDR, I can get a decent work-out in my living room, which is all I really care about.

WiiFit looks like an interesting diversion, not something I'd go outta my way and spend $70 on but something I'd give a try if given the chance. Also looks like it's a bit more fleshed out than WiiSports... still don't get the hate.

I had two theories on Wiifit performance in Japan:

1.) Everyone laps it up like delicious poop
2.) The 90% of Japanese people who haven't turned on their Wii in 6 months are too lazy to buy it, and the bubble bursts

I imagine #1 is the case.

I like the Brain Age-like progression where you keep unlocking harder challenges and different exercises.
I've done it for three continuous days now, and my weight has dropped consistently 200g each day.

I think this will sell quite slowly at first, like Brain Age did, but will pick up a lot with word of mouth, and I expect sales will be massive after the pigging out season.

There is a recognized phenomenon (i.e. i saw this on tv once...) wherein weight drops just by recording it every day, with no conscious change in diet or excercise. I'm pretty damned skeptical that Wii Fit is actually going to make anyone significantly fitter in any way they couldn't accomplish just as easily without WiiFit, but if all it does is take the pain out of recording your weight every day, it's probably worth something in terms of weight loss and making you realize the impact of your diet. But let's not talk about weight loss over a 3 day period...you need a much longer study period to get any sort of meaningful result.

Skepticism is always welcome. For me, Wii Fit is just more fun than Billy's Boot Camp, and more convenient than going to the gym. There was a time a couple of years back when I used to do squats and jogging on the spot for 5 mins every morning, but it soon got dull. Also, you must try yoga on a balance board. It's so much more difficult when you can see where your centre of weight is.

Of course it got dull. Anything you do every day will get dull. And very likely so will WiiFit, as interesting as it might be right now after 3 whole days. And then the balance board will go into the closet or on eBay.

Unless of course you're one of those people that is still doing your Brain Training faithfully every day...in which case the game format is enough to convert an otherwise tedious activity into something you can stick with. I'd imagine those people are pretty rare though - i haven't seen anyone play BT in months.

One thing about a lot of the Wii fit exercises is that they don't last very long.  You can change the number of times you do a lot of the yoga and fit board exercises, but for stuff like the jogging and sticking with the defaults, each exercise only lasts a minute or two.  I can easily see many overweight fanboys buying this and then wondering why their weight hasn't gone down even though they cut down to only three buckets of KFC instead of four, did SIX push-ups, and jogged for a WHOPPING three minutes!

I do believe that Wii Fit can help you to lose weight.  And I like the yoga stuff.  I honestly felt good after doing some of the yoga exercises last night.  But the game is set up with casual non-gamers in mind, and you can just load up the system, play a mini game or two, stop, and shut the system off.  They should have added a more rigorous "forced" program.

BTW, you can full install the game on your Wii.  It shows up as the "Wii Fit Channel."

lyte edge, I've opened up the long course on the jogging, and it took about 6 minutes. There might be longer too... hopefully. Also, it's kind of up to you how much effort you put into it. If you lift your knees up higher and stuff, you burn more calories. I always seem to be jogging at 240% and get four stars... for what it's worth.

Bragging already i see - if this thing had Achievements, you'd be in the 2008 Olympics with demi :lol

Interesting Groo; will try to lift those knees higher and go for a better record!

well it doesn't seem that AWFUL.  it's like Yourself: Fitness that was on xbox1 but with more interesting exercises.

Very much so.  There's nothing bad about this. And unlock fitness videos or (I assume) Yourself Fitness, since you have to use the board and the Wiimote, the game knows if you're doing shit correctly or being a lazy fuck.

Wii Fit is not really a "game" in the traditional sense though...buy it if you want some exercise.  Perhaps the Fit Board could be used for a skiing or snowboarding/skateboarding game though.  Having the board for your feet/balance and the Wiimote/Nunchuck for your hands opens up a lot of possibilities.

If my ass were in SHAPE, I would have zero interest in this.  :P

Does the Wii Fit setup raise heart rate to 145 ish for 20 minutes or more? This is important because no device is really an element of weight loss until this takes place. There's a reason there are thin marathon runners and fat weight lifters. I will admit that Wii Fit's planned exercises may put someone in the proper mindset to lose weight, and may even promote a sort of good feeling placebo effect, but I HIGHLY doubt its low impact yoga stuff matters. You never see fat people doing yoga to lose weight.

In short, Wii Fit is for people who are already fit that need to maybe stretch a bit lol.

You don't need to exercise, let alone get your heart rate up, to lose weight.  It's just daily calorie input vs. how many calories your body burns in a day.  You can lose fat sitting on your ass all day with a healthy diet.  Of course, it's faster with exercise that burns a lot of calories (and you can be a lot more free with your diet).

I'd guess you don't see fat people doing yoga very often because it's hard and fucking embarrassing (as a fat person).

edit: Wii Fit will ultimately fail for most people just like normal exercise.  Once you're past age 25 if you're not naturally blessed with absurd metabolism you need to change your lifestyle, not rely on a little exercise each day.

huh? not sure i'm getting this...
you need to change your lifestyle rather than rely on a little exercise?
is "rely" the right word here? this makes it sound like everyone in the world who exercise is some sort of sucker who has been dragged into a con!

exercise has a number of things that are beneficial to you , health wise.
Sitting on ass and altering your diet to stop you from gaining weight is a lost battle right from the off.

Anyways, if wiifit at least gets people thinking about their weight, gets them doing even gentle exercise, then it's a good thing.

Even if people think "WTF? What a load of shit! I'll go to the gym instead! stupid nintendolts!" then even THAT has served a purpose.

Hell,l i dont have any intention of using wiifit for its exercise (the wife bought it) but i'll damn well be using it to track weightloss/BMI etc...

I'm way past 25 - i might be abnormal here , but i LIKE exercise.

The first part of my post was directed at MAF.  It's quite easy to lose weight without exercising let alone getting your heart rate up to 145 bpm.  I'm not trying to say exercise doesn't help you lose weight or have serious health benefits.

The edit was badly worded.  Here's what I meant.  You can't continue to eat like shit (fast food, etc.) and expect a little exercise (what you'll get out of Wii Fit) to solve your weight problem.  You need to change your lifestyle.  The way to lose weight is to maintain a daily calorie deficit and your diet is the most important part of that as it takes roughly 2 hours of jogging to burn the calories in one of the larger burgers from a place like Hardees.

I do disagree with this, though.

The reason there tend to be thin runners and fat weightlifters is that carrying extra weight is an impediment to running long distance, and being thin means you don't have the muscle mass to lift heavy weight. You can lose weight equally well with either protocol, provided you: 1) follow an appropriate diet; and 2) care more about your weight than your performance in that activity.

why though? that goes pretty contrary to what you are saying in the part above that i agree with.

Increasing your exercise increases the deficit in your favour, sitting doing nothing makes it harder to take in a healthy amount of vitamins/minerals etc without breaking your deficit and it means you have to sacrifice what you eat.

1 hour of jogging (at least on my read out) burns around 800 kcals - 2 hours, which is what i'm aiming for would stick me at 1600 kcals - which is the vast chunk of the days intake.

Sitting on your ass is going to force you calorie intake down to very low levels as you become more and more inactive - it's unhealthy and eventually you may push your body into starvation mode. And as you get older and your metabolism kicks in and your body waves a little white flag and suddenly "fatboyitis" kicks in, getting into exercise is more difficult.

Exercising now whilst your young makes it easy as you get significantly older.

I disagree because it's actually quite easy (especially today with supplements) to eat a healthy diet and get everything your body needs while maintaining a small calorie deficit.  The key is "small calorie deficit".  Exercise is still preferred for many reasons but if you find yourself in a situation where you happen to be a programmer going through a life-consuming WoW kick and have a low metabolism it is possible to lose weight during this time without being hungry all the time (a clear indication you're starving yourself).

I stress diet the most because it has the biggest effect on how I feel on a daily basis and I find it the easiest to change / maintain.

i'd still suggest this is very hard to accomplish and requires more discipline than it would take to do the 25 minutes of exercise ;)

It depends.  If you're forced to eat at restaurants more than once a week then it becomes a lot harder.  I found healthy foods that took at most 10 minutes prep time so I probably spent the same amount of time between food prep and grocery store shopping as I would driving to get fast food per week (assuming I was going once per day).

My plan is to eat the same way (just expanding on the diversity of foods I eat) for the rest of my life.  It's my base.  I do (now) and will exercise to help increase my energy level, for general health reasons, and yes, to look better.  However, I know that it will be the most inconsistent part of my lifestyle because, well, I'm fucking lazy.

edit: Also, since this thread is about it.  Wii Fit looks fun from the impressions Sporks keeps posting.
