Japan only PS2 games. Any suggestions?
« on: December 03, 2007, 06:12:49 PM »
I gave my US slimline to my cousin recently.  Since I own an US 60 gigger PS3, which can't play Japanese PS2 games, I'm thinking of picking up a ceramic white slimline.  The new revision with the internal power supply looks great.

I didn't really get into PS2 imports last gen, or any gen, rather.  Do you guys have any recommendations?

If you're into 2D shooters at all, look up Espgaluda.  Simple 2000 Series: The Earth Defense Force 2 is still worthwhile, as it's got stuff they didn't have the budget/time to put in the 360 version.

How about some good Japan-only PS1 games? Since I no longer rely on my modded flip top/swap magic PS2, because of my newly acquired Japanese slimline ceramic white PS2, I can now play PS1 games.

What genres are you interested in?  I can give you some recommendations if you can tell me the types of games you like.

I love RPGs, but my Japanese is totally non-existent even after 3 years of it at college.  But I'm into all types of games, but my favorites are platformers, action games, rhythm games, racing (not realistic ones, but arcadey like RR, Burnout, etc.), FPS, Shmups, Light Gun games, and quirky stuff.

Wouldn't it be difficult to get a hold of Japanese PSone titles now, Distant?  I know I'll probably get raped on eBay building my import PS2 library.:(

Japan only PS1 titles:

-Umihara Kawase Shun (little girl with a fishhook, sort of like Bionic Commando with a really advanced physics engine, charming and surreal 2D graphics)
-Internal Section (sort of a cross between Rez and Tempest, put out by Squaresoft of all people. Amazing graphics for the system. Great soundtrack!!!)
-Tales of Phantasia Remix
-Tobal 2
-Adventures of Little Ralph (never played this but I've heard good things about it, and it's a 2D platformer with awesome graphics)
-Gunner's Heaven (a blatant Gunstar Heroes ripoff, that, taken on its own merit, is supposedly pretty good)
-Moon (RPG with a really creative setup, made by Skip so bares resemblance to games like Chibi Robo)
-Front Mission Alternative (Front Mission + RTS where some of the mechs are named after slang terms for cocks, supposedly good)

I'm surprised that you mech nerds haven't recommended Super Robot Wars.  Actually, I'll give it a try if they ever port it to the US, just to see what the hype is about.

Oh, yeah. SRW games a lot of fun, if you're really into giant robot shows from the last 30 years. If you aren't, you'll probably be bored out of your mind trying to stumble through a text heavy Japanese game.

The SD G Generation Gundam games are also strategy games.

I don't know how the PS2 version is but you might want to try out Beserk. I used to play the shit out of the DC one back in the day and the PS2 version seemed to be a step up from that.

Heh, Tobal 2 is about to be released for Docomo cell phones here!

This is what I'd recommend.  I'm big on fighters, so there's going to be a lot of those.

-Sengoku Basara 2: Capcom fucked up royally with their localized version of the original game, titled "Devil Kings" in the U.S.  But the first game was crap anyway.  Basara 2 is an amazing fusion of arcade style beat-em-ups and Koei's Samurai Warriors games.  The stages are smaller and linear, but what makes up for this are the enemy variety and especially the over-the-top character designs and personalities.  I HIGHLY recommend this if you like action games.  It's been rereleased several times, so you should be able to get it cheap now.  And if you like it, the expansion, Heroes, just came out last week, adding more characters and two player modes.

-Earth Defense Force 2: I prefer this over the 360 version.  The frame rate may be (much) worse, but the game has two different playable characters and more weapons.  It's cheap as hell, too.

-Melty Blood: PS2 port of the PC doujin game-turned arcade game, based on some light hentai-like PC game but changed around.  *phew*  All you need to know is that this is a fast-paced, combo HEAVY fighter that has virtually zero chance of ever seeing release outside Japan.

-Vampire Darkstalkers Collection: All the Vampire games in one package, with "hidden" bonus versions of Hunter 2, Savior, and Savior 2 featuring the entire cast, and one "new" character, the Demitri/Donovan hybrid Dee.  I don't know why Capcom didn't release this in English.

-KOF Maximum Impact Regulation A: A more fine-tuned version of Maximum Impact 2 (AKA KOF 2006), with more characters and even better game play.  In-depth thread is here: http://www.evilbore.com/forum/index.php?topic=10975.0

-The Rumblefish: Unique-looking 2D fighter (another ORIGINAL game) from Dimps.  A sequel came out in 2005, but was arcade-only; this version has two characters from the sequel as unlockables, though.

-Twinkle Star Sprites: Polygonized version of the unique competitive shooter from ADK.  Also contains the original Neo-Geo version.

-Arcana Heart: A brand-new fighting game series not based on any licensed property is rare.  A 2D fighter is even rarer.  This game was made by Samurai Shodown V and Special development staff; it's a one-on-one fighter in a more traditional vein, populated by a cast of various anime-cliche schoolgirls and settings.  Despite this, the game play is fantastic and it feels much more solid and less combo heavy in comparison to Melty Blood.  You can also choose different Arcanas for your character; these are basically MORE moves and abilities that can be added to any character, making for literally 11-12 versions of every character in the game.

-OZ: Beat-em-up game with some heavy juggling elements.  I haven't played much of this, actually, but it seems cool.  It's just that Sengoku Basara 2 pretty much kills everything else in the genre for me.

-Shin Gouketsuji Ichizoku: Bonnou Kaihou (Power Instinct Matrimelee upgrade): Quirky, bizarre fighter featuring Bobby Ologann as the new midboss.  Brings back two older Power Instinct Characters, but drops the Rage Of The Dragon characters that were hidden in the Neo-Geo version.  This game has the most bizarre soundtrack I've ever heard in a fighting game...it's all voiced and all WEIRD.

-Neo-Geo Online Collection Series: Some of these make it out in English, but good GERSTMANN are they slow to get them out.  The best ports are Garou MOTW, Fatal Fury Battle Archives 2 (The Real Bouts), Savage Reign/Kizuna Encounter, and World Heroes Gorgeous.  Avoid the Last Blade collection; it's a fucked up port.

NeoGeo Battle Coliseum is supposed to be hitting the U.S. soon, and Samurai Spirits Tenkaichi Kenkakuden is coming in the SS Collection whenever the hell that releases, so I'm removing them from the list.  And YOU HAVE KOF XI, RIGHT?  RIGHT??!   ;)

Let me check for more games when I get home.  I know I'm leaving some stuff out.

I have Gunners Heaven, it's pretty good.  I want Panzer Bandit, it's supposed to be another Guardian Heroes rip-off by Banpresto for PSX, and is supposed to be fun.  I've never seen it for sale, tho.

Panzer Bandit is okay.  It's made by Fill-In-Cafe, the makers of the Asuka 120% fighting game series, so the art and controls are very similar if you've played those games.  Guardian Heroes spanks Panzer Bandit all over the fucking place, but it's still a good game.  I never see it anywhere but I'm sure it must pop up in Akihabara from time to time.  Another game I never see is Tecmo's Angel Eyes.  I found it in Akihabara after looking to get it back for YEARS and quickly snapped it up.

I don't know how the PS2 version is but you might want to try out Beserk. I used to play the shit out of the DC one back in the day and the PS2 version seemed to be a step up from that.

Two contrasting opinions! Who do I believe?!? I didn't know that it was a different developer as the gameplay looked very close to the original. I'll still eventually get this down the line but what made it worse than the DC game?

It's a mediocre beat-em-up.  Fuck it and get the vastly superior Sengoku Basara 2 and/or OZ instead.  One of my friends is a HUGE Beserk fan...he was about to go and buy a Japanese PS2 just to play Berserk when it came out.  I downloaded it for him to check out...needless to say, he was pretty unimpressed with it.  He loved the DC version BTW.  If you're a huge Berserk fan and you can find the game cheap, it might be worth checking out.  I would not pay anything more than $20 for it though.

Naw, SNK went all out on this game.  Here's what they did:

-Removed the line sway system.  All action takes place on a single plane (and thus very little to no animation is missing)
-Added "Final Impact" super cancelling system
-Added NEW, ORIGINAL special moves to some of the characters.  These moves are only in this version of the game.
-Added hidden, unlockable THIRD super moves (gotten by beating the game [and fighting Geese] with all the characters)
-Added new background animation/objects on some stages.  With line sway gone, the backgrounds got more detail.
-Added Alfred, from Real Bout 2, as a fully playable character.  (He is playable in RB2 with a modded Neo)
-Added a brand new end boss, White.  White is SNK's take on the main character from A Clockwork Orange.
-Added a brand new anime intro, anime cut scenes in single player, and an anime ending (these are the same for every character)

The only bad thing about this game is the character's voice quality...they're kind of muffled, like the Saturn SNK ports.  Other than that, the game has aged pretty damn well.  Load times are short too.

There are two versions of the game that were released.  The double-disc version comes with a bonus fan omake disc.  I finally found a copy of this version last year but still haven't bothered to check out the CD.   :lol  EDIT: HOLY SHIT, Kao Megura's (R.I.P.) FAQ for the bonus disc says it has a DUCK KING DANCE MODE!  :o :o :o

I played the shit out of this game.  At the time, I had just gotten rid of my Neo CD and my entire collection in favor of a cart system (which was coming with RB2), and during the time without a Neo, this was my SNK fighting game savior!

Only Shun is out for PSX, but there's two versions of it.  The first has some condiment advertisements between levels, and the second removes those and has some bugfixes.
