Street Figher IV Unveiled
« on: December 06, 2007, 05:24:26 AM »

Numbers are supposed to be impressive, right? Well, it's been 10 years, two hardware generations, and about seventeen thousand rumors since the last pure number Street Fighter came around. And today we have the first ever official details on Street Fighter IV.

We don't blame you if your eyes have already skipped down to the screenshot lower on the page (yes, that's from the game engine). Take your time. But we've got some information as well, so the rest of this is probably worth reading when you get a chance.

Though the screenshot doesn't answer this question outright, we can confirm that the game's graphics are polygonal but the gameplay is strictly 2D. There will be new moves, locations, and gameplay features, while the standard six button control scheme remains. Ryu and Ken return along with Chun-Li and Dhalsim, but beyond that the character roster is a mystery. And then there's the issue of what platform(s) the game will end up on, which at this point Capcom is keeping close to its chest (if you search 1UP's database, you'll find listings for arcade, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions, but those are just guesses based on the graphical quality).

SCREENSHOT: Click on the image above to see the high-res. version.

For the full reveal of the game -- including hands-on impressions, a rundown of the new gameplay system, and loads of details on new features -- look for the January 2008 issue of EGM in stores soon and hitting subscribers any day now. And then after you check the issue out, keep your eye on 1UP's Street Fighter IV hub page for ongoing coverage continuing into January.

Anyway, are you still reading this? Didn't you see the screenshot above? Click it and look at the larger version! All your friends are doing it...

So 3D graphics with 2D game play.  Capcom is moving on and making a game that will appeal to a wider audience.  But I don't know what to think about that art yet.  They should have gone with a better picture.   :-\

Yup.  And the detail on that Ryu model, questionable penis-like white polygon aside, is amazing.  It has a very hand-drawn like look to it.  It's still far too early to pass any kind of judgment.  They're still not talking game play.

I wonder what type of changes in the game play we can expect.  I still hope special attack-super combo cancels, a la SF3, are still in the mix.

Looks terrible.  If any game is SUPPOSED to be sprite-based, it's this.  I think they meant this is Street Fighter Ex 4, not Street Fighter 4.

i'm kinda disappointed that they went with full 3D graphics, although i had a feeling they'd go that route. A sprite-based SF4 with HD-quality sprites and animation surpassing Third Strike would be orgasmic, but costly. It actually looks pretty good as it is and there's a much better level of background detail than i would've expected with the jump to 3D.

The EX comparisons need to stop until we get confirmation on the gameplay and animation. i'm staying cautiously optimistic that they won't totally fuck up the gameplay, but regardless of how it plays, people will bitch.

The graphics aren't the way they are in the teaser that everyone watched. The game's still pretty, but it has nothing of that ink-splashing or anything. Art direction is interesting. Unlike all the other 3D fighters, SFIV is not meant to be photo realistic.

Street Fighter IV runs at 60 frames per second.

Street Fighter IV will have online play.

The game takes place after Super Street Fighter II Turbo and before SFIII. The good news is that the character roster will be made of many old-school brawlers and some entirely new ones. There are two new girls on the list. We will probably not see any SFIII characters.

The stage you saw at 1Up, if you didn't figure out, is Chun-Li's Stage from SF2.

The excellent Parry system form SFIII is gone. The new system seems to be called Saving or Revenge (we're not sure about the name). We don't know exactly how it works, but it's built around cancels. And we do know we'll have another gauge to activate the Saving/Revenge stuff, besides the usual Super Gauge.

Supers are there (although they didn't decide yet if it will be like in SSF2T or SFIII), and now they've put another moves called Ultras. These makes your character throws a auto combo with tons of moves. It's like a custom combo ... except by the custom part.

Shen Long may appear in the game. We are NOT kidding.

The consoles are not decided yet, really. But, assuming that SFIV will have online play, we can obviously think of Xbox 360 and PS3 (duh). It's very likely that we'll see an arcade version without online mode too, and our sources told us that Capcom could put some test machines in Japan arcades in Q2 next year.

If this is true, I get the feeling the hardcore SF community is not going to be pleased by this.  Hope I'm wrong, but then again it took those guys years to get into SF3 the way it is played now.

From the pics, the animation looks like it's going to be great.  Take a look at Ryu's gi when he's throwing the fireball...it's moving like SF3.  I wouldn't be surprised if this game has some absolutely amazing animation to go along with its cartoon-like appearance.

They're not even in the same universe, that's how far apart the two are in quality.  SF2 HD Remix is complete ass.  The character models in this actually look good. It's just the backgrounds I have some problems with.

Yup, before jumping to "OMFG WTF WTF IS THIS SF NOOO" fanboy conclusions, I want info I know is correct for certain and I want to see it action.  It's also early anyway and I'd expect visually it's only going to get better.

Battle Fantasia proves a 2.5D game can be done on the level of a sprite-based fighter, folks.

Who's defending it, Himuro?  It's still too early to do anything comment on some early screenshots.  That's all that's going on here.

If parries really are gone, it will be a much more accessable game for a lot of people.  They're probably doing all they can to try to recapture some of the success SF2 had while forgetting about SF3, which IIRC, despite the popularity 3rd Strike did finally get, was essentially "bomba."

I am happy the parries are gone.  It destroyed projectiles and killed playstyles.  It was unfair to some characters (Grapplers, for instance, get raped with parries, since they are much slower, their attacts are easier to parry) and favored the fastest ones.

So much crying in this thread and GAF.  Nobody gave a fucking shit about parries or SF3 when it came out.  People started playing it because of what happened in 2004.  You could ask anyone before that if he had played any SF3, he would have answered a)what sf3? b)sf3? oh you mean ALPHA 3 right?  It took 5 years (7 if you count the first version) for people to give a shit about it.

Over that said, I would still advice everyone not to trust this article entirely.  The giveaway:  Shen Long, they mentioned it.  HE DOESN´T EXIST.  Not even in the USA canon.
