The trailer will premier right as my ban is over. :bow

CAN'T WAIT FOR THIS TRAILER GUYS. I've been a fan of the series forever, and GTA2 is still my favorite. Once they started dumbing down the game to get more sales I kinda tuned out. But SA was fun

December 6, 2007 - The year is almost out, which means it's the season for giving (and receiving). Rockstar Games has decided to let us unwrap its present to the world a little early with the release of the third full trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV. To coincide with its release, we fired off a number of questions to the publisher/developer to get a little more insight on the trailer. Here's what we've learned:

IGN: Having just seen the trailer, is there any more insight you can provide on the story of GTA IV?

Rockstar Games: Obviously this story has a heavy focus on Niko and his relationship to his cousin, Roman. Without giving away too many details, it's the dynamics of that relationship and the motivations and mistakes, past and present, that each keep hidden from the other, that drive the narrative for most of the game. Their story is about the immigrant experience of two different personality types - those looking to the future and those running away from the past. We don't like to give away too many details because we want people to experience the story the way it was intended - by playing the game and getting sucked into the game world.

IGN: Is there anything in the trailer that people might overlook?

Rockstar: The level of detail - look at the wheels of the motor bikes, the details in the faces and light reflected in the river. This same level of details exists throughout the game - not just in terms of art, but also mission design, animation, physics, narrative, audio, AI and world atmosphere. Creating a detailed but still consistent and believable game world has always been one of our aims with any Grand Theft Auto, and for Grand Theft Auto IV it has led to an amazing amount of life and detail in every aspect of the production.

IGN: The stories in the past three GTA games all had their own feel (and were inspired by different eras). What is the vibe of the new story? Is it comparable to a popular movie or era?

Rockstar: The game is set today, so we wanted a story, world and set of characters that felt very contemporary. We don't feel the story is comparable to any particular movie. For one thing it is obviously much broader in scope than a movie script, as the game is far longer than any movie, and for another, we felt that the power of the new hardware gave us the freedom to tell stories in a more detailed and engaging way, so we no longer need to take prompts from movies and instead could take inspiration from the world itself. The game is very much inspired by the realities of living in New York in particular, and the world in general, right now. The story is long, more like a TV series or epic novel than one movie and has several major twists and turns in it.

IGN: Is there anything you can tell us about any of the locations in the trailer? I've noticed we see quite a bit of the interiors, are we going to be able to explore those?

Rockstar: Yes, the Liberty City that Niko will experience has a lot of interiors, and yes you can explore them in lots of different ways... Obviously, it depends on the location as to what happens there and what you can do or enjoy there.

Niko is always the last man standing.
IGN: About midway through the trailer something has Roman scared. Any hints you can give about what has Roman so shook up?

Rockstar: Roman is more of a lover than a fighter and he's made some very nasty people very angry. He's right to be frightened. We have tried to give all of the characters their own motivations, ambitions and needs, so that the narrative develops naturalistically as a result of the interplay of its characters.

IGN: Is the extended hand-to-hand combat sequence a sign of things to come?

Rockstar: We have worked incredibly hard to develop the hand to hand combat - as we have all of the key mechanics of the game - so the fighting in the game feels very powerful. Certainly in the first section of the game when Niko is a dirt poor immigrant scrabbling around to pay off debts, he has to use his fists a lot. Luckily, he's pretty adept at it.

IGN: You guys have gone with another obscure track for this trailer. Is there a reason for this? What is the song in the trailer?

Rockstar: The track is called King Ring by Serjoga. He's the most popular rap artist in Russia by far, and we chose it partly because we felt it captured the spirit of the game - Russian dance rap maybe epitomizes the melting pot mentality of Liberty City - but mostly because we felt the track gave the trailer a unique feeling and energy. The soundtrack (and the radio it is played on) has been expanded and developed for Grand Theft Auto's high-definition debut.

The song owns!

well the framerate was actually improved over the last trailers.  still, it's GTA, so don't expect anything too impressive graphically.

I'm pretty limp for this game.  I mean, I can see why people are hyped for it because it's got all the production value and name power but it's not doing anything interesting.  might rent it or buy it cheap eventually.

This was exactly what I was thinking after the first couple of brief trailers. I just pictured that they might go with a feeling of either Niko is just such a notorious badass, that he had to come to the States because he made too many enemies back home, OR that Niko needed to survive and he found himself doing inexplicable things (human trafficing) because he felt he had no choice in the matter.

Alas, it seems like the typical GTA lol we do crime and stuff attitude. I'm sure I'll pick this up around day one, get about 3/4 through and get stuck on a mission that absolutely pisses me off to the point I'll never pick the game up again...just like every other GTA in the series. But, in the end I'll feel as if I've got my money's worth and to me that's usually all the matters.

They hint at this interviews. He comes to America because his cousin Roman said that life in America was good and that Niko should come. Since Niko's hands are blood stained, he obviously has another reason to come to America.

I'm just sick of the whole forced comedic relief GTA tries to have in every cutscene. Scratch that, in every damn line. I bet he will be spouting some 'tough guy phrases' when you're out in the streets and shooting/punching people. Seriously, this game hasn't changed at all. Some nice physics and updated graphics but that's it. Voice acting is shit as usual, Niko sounds terrible. Damn...that first trailer with the operatic music had me fooled so much.

Himu, you cannot deny that GTA has been nothing but a satire of different genres of the underworld. Compare the trailer that Powerslave is talking about, to the latest one. They are two completely different tones. I really thought that maybe with all the R* talk about bringing GTA to next gen, maybe they were also bringing a different attitude to the game is well. I wouldn't go so far as to say I feel mislead or anything...but, I just feel a little let down with this last trailer. My expectations were wrong, and they are going with the same familiar feel that made GTA popular. You really can't blame them for that, but it isn't going to work forever. I just thought that they were going a different route this time around.

They are two different tones. I think that's the point.

It COULD end being just like past GTA's, but basing all of this on a 2 minute trailer is silly. If you're expecting them to completely leave out all of the things that made GTA popular in the first place, you're crazy. You will still be able to go on rampages, you will still be able to cause mayhem, you will still be able to feel like a badass noone wants to fuck with. If they took that out, no one would buy it.

I will shall judge the game upon release.

so we're not allowed to complain about it?  awfully convenient for gta fans.  this is a thread about GTA, right?  like discussions regarding GTA are supposed to go in here right?

hell, most of us said we were buying it, but we still have the right to complain about the faults that Rockstar has refused to address.

I just think it's silly to base the game's story off of the trailer. You can say,"I was hoping they were going to take another route this time" all you want, but fact is, we still know little about the game, or the game's story, and it will remain that way until a week until release when pirates like Mondain get the leak. There are a lot of annoyed fans who are mad that the game was delayed, so it makes sense to me for rockstar to address the people who are worried this new game wont' be gta-ish. There's two sides of the coin. R* needs to address the people who having waning faith in the series, and old fans like me who are worried it won't feel like GTA because they're going for an ultra serious mood. Either way, they're going to catch shit.

the story's never been that great in GTA though.  And the style has always leaned more towards blowing up cars and slicing people's heads off.  They might go slightly more serious with this story, but they're not going to radically change the second biggest cash cow in the gaming industry.

why shouldn't we go by the trailer?  mixed with rockstar's past installments, I think it's a fair call to say it's going to be like the other GTA's in regards to the story.  I don't think it's silly at all to base our opinions on the trailer.

i mean, there are certain things that GTA has always done right, and there are things they have always well... done horribly.  It's great that you want the same thing, himuro.  And i'm not judging your game tastes.  mine just happen to be different and i don't want the same thing.

assassin's creed proved to me that an open environment game CAN compel me with the story.  i'm just hoping rockstar will go down the same route.

I didn't say I wanted the same thing, but if I did get the same thing I wouldn't really mind either, because I like the old GTA's a lot. I actually feel the same way in some areas. I want a more serious story, something like The Departed but with immigrants...I think it'd be neat. The trailer didn't deliver anything like that, but it *did* deliver great acting. The acting is so good that I already feel as if I know what a lot of the characters' personalities are like. I like the humor, and the past trailers have shown that it won't be nothing but that like people are suggesting in this thread.

I just think that the previous two trailers give enough evidence to suggest that it won't be just what we saw in trailer 3. To me, trailer 3 is nothing but pure fan service, and I'm fine with that.

The Departed with immigrants?

I doubt R* are going to focus on providing a compelling story.  I'm sure they could, but they won't need to for this game.  It's the farthest thing from story-driven.  GTA games are just a bunch of movie references built into a coherent story.  They certainly have no reason for it to be SERIOUS.  Even the first trailers weren't that serious (getalife building).

Am Nintendho, the first trailer was very serious. It was a very non-conventional GTA trailer. Of course, there's stuff like the Getalife building. That's an element of GTA.

Anyways, Rockstar said in the interviews that it's not going to be based around movie references like in the past. We'll see if they deliver.

You doubt that they are going to focus on story this time? Did you even watch the third trailer? At all? That felt like a trailer for an actual movie to me.
