SA was the best one actually.  The gameplay was slightly improved but the soundtrack was a lot better.

I dunno.  There were a lot of songs I didn't care for in VC.  I liked most of SA's songs though.

I like SA's soundtrack the most. It's full of songs I grew up, especially since most of them are black people songs. Still, I prefer III and VC's soundtrack because SA's soundtrack has too much dead time. In III and VC there is always a song on any fucking station that I could play the game to, in SA, not so much. Still, it has the best *soundtrack*, but not the best one suited for GTA. Also, the commercials and talk radio sucked in SA.

The gameplay wasn't the best. It wasn't nearly as non linear as GTAVC's mission structure, the missions did not have multiple routes you could take to complete them, many of the missions consisted of by the numbers GTA missions, the difficulty was eased up considerably.

The story sucked. It had potential to be a good knock off of Boyz in the Hood and other classics, and be a good social outlook on the state of modern black America, but then it turns into fucking James Bond and stealing Jetpacks and bombing Jets and it makes no sense. GTA is about being a criminal, not be James Bond.

On top of that, SA has the least memorable cast in the console 3d GTA's - OG Loc is classic, Toreno (although he doesn't fit in the game at all), Tenpenny and Polowski, so is the stoner guy, but honestly those are the only great characters. The  people you work for aren't interesting either. Since the second thing I like about GTA games, past the i can do anything I want gameplay, are the characters, SA disappointed on that front.

Further still, CJ is the worst GTA main character. In game he says shit like FUCK YOU and SORRY PAL, BUT YOU JUST GOT JACKED :lol but in the story he's a fucking moralistic pussy and it makes no sense. "YOU MEAN...I HAVE TO KILL HIM?!!?" You must be shitting me Cj. You have killed thousands you idiot. I think they did that because he's black and having a black main character who doesn't give a fuck would cast R* in a bad light.

The best thing about SA is the huge open world, and even then, there's tons of huge empty spaces that don't serve any purpose at all. In GTA1, 2, London, 3, and VC every thing in the cities serve a purpose. Not so much in SA.

Killing a fucker with a dildo is just lame btw.

It's really bad, Himuro.  The graphics aren't impressive on any level, and they are still not using cutting edge tech.  I mean, it was forgivable last gen when GTA was this new phenom, but now?  They have to put some elbow grease into it.  Fuck coasting on their lazy asses.  They made millions upon millions upon millions of dollars; what the fuck?  Impress us!  At least FUCKING TRY to impress us.  They aren't even trying.

I think it looks really wtf in pics, but it looks good in video. I thought that the hanging from the helicopter and truck bits from the second trailer was fucking amazing graphically. I think the graphics in some shots are absolutely stunning, like this shot in the trailer for instance:

Then there's this. The fire effects are CRAZY.

The smoke effects are very impressive too:

And then there's this part...

Then you have the great facial animations on the characters, like that guy with the shot gun in the last scene of the trailer who says,"So you in big guy? Or are we gonna have to kill you?"

It's got nothing on Assassin's Creed, but compared a lot of next gen games that won't have environments nearly as big I think GTAIV's graphics are really impressive for the scale they're going for. I mean, the part where the guy falls on the car? Holy shit.

For us GTA fans, the graphics in the latest trailer have really exceeded our expectations.

I can't believe there are people that consider themselves fans of GTA but hate SA.  Go back and play through III and VC.  The controls are fucking beyond broken.  It's amazing that we were able to put up with that garbage back when they came out.

I happen to like the story in SA too.  Sure it's a little out there but when Tenpenny dropped CJ off in Angel Pines, the game took a different direction from all the mindless gangbanging and I was thankful for it.  That's when the game really started to kick into gear.  I was a little disappointed that in the end CJ ends up back on the block at Grove Street doing the same stupid thug shit he was at the beginning.  That's my biggest pet peeve with CJ character.  He seemed smarter than that.

So I finally just watched the trailer. I first started to watch it on my laptop, but it seemed choppy. I figured it was my shitty laptop, as it seems to do that with for some HD videos. So I streamed it to my TV through my 360. I found out that choppiness was the godawful framerate. Game doesn't look amazing and it doesn't look that bad either. Unless the framerate stays that bad.

And I think fans of GTA that don't like SA are ones that just felt burnt out on the series by that point. Well, that's more a reason why I waited so long to buy it. I got it this year and the controls just seemed so awful, even on the PC. I guess 3 and VC would seem just as bad now, but when they came out I was able to take(holy shit I can't think of the word right now) it

I have played GTAIII 7 times from beginning to end and I am going through it again right fucking now. It was my favorite game last generation and my most replayed.

Vice City is a better game than III but I like III more.

I don't even hate SA. I clocked 100 hours in the game and never got tired of it despite my complaints but even I will admit it was the weaker GTA for multiple reasons - reasons I already stated.

GTA without gang banging is like Final Fantasy without a transexual as a main character. It doesn't make sense, it's a part of the series' identity.

That's another problem with SA. The gangs SUCKED. In III you had the mafia, the diablos, the triads, the southside hoods, the yardies, columbians, yakuza... all SA had was the grove street guys, ballas, those two mexican gangs in los santos that i forgot because they suck and you hardly interacted with them, the yakuza, random russian mobsters and well. that was it.

I wasn't burned out but one of my biggest reasons for disliking San Andreas is how distinguished mentally-challenged the whole storyline got, exactly like you said,  with the whole gangbanger going superspy bullshit.

And a bigger reason is the music in the game. Radio Los Santos and a few songs from Radio X were good, but the rest of the stations were horrible and only featured like 1 or 2 good songs on it. The talkradio was disappointing and not funny as well.

But the biggest reason is how the environment still felt so... empty. SA is big but there isn't anything you can do on one part of the map that you can't do on the other side. There was no point in making it that big. Look at the whole country and the forest sides. There isn't anything interesting to do there. They could have at least thrown in a few hidden easter eggs or secret missions, but it was just void.

Me neither. I have played this game for more than 300 hours I bet. It's just the feeling of disappointment that made me so bitter about this game.

I think I was just kind of GTAed out by the time SA came out.  I just wanted something different, even a little different.  The big draw for me with SA was the areas between the cities, and they were really little more than filler.  I let myself get a little hyped there, and I ended up cold because of it.

For what it's worth, I liked the story and presentation in SA a whole lot, probably more than both previous entries.  No problems there.  No problems with the game in general.  It was just an expansion pack too far.  If it had been my first GTA, no doubt it would be the one I loved the most.

Fuck, the more I think about it the more it annoys me. This is gonna be the same as San Andreas. Walk to the 'mission' location, watch a shitty cutscene where Nicko walks into a quiet room and looks around, then some dumbass character greets him with a poor joke, poor and over the top body language occurs, mission starts.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking.  This whole R* holding its cards close to its chest thing sucks ass.  I mean, it's ALWAYS sucked ass, but it sucks even more now that gaming is pricier.  Tell us how the fucking game is going to be any better than the last one.  It looks to display the same amount of subpar technical competence, the presentation is in the same vein of previous games, thus I think I am basically getting the same game again, and I am not interested in that. Fuck that.

Have you read the previews where they have mentioned a completely different mission structure, how enemies now have a line of sight and you can get away with crimes as long as you're crafty - making random killings that much harder, the new wanted system, and other stuff?

Well, I expected something to change, what with them using the same graphics engine as the previous games.

Video games are primarily a visual medium, and after this year, 2007, if you aren't at least trying to impress me, chances are I'm not going to pay much attention, unless you are an established gameplay name that could get away with skimping on the visual pizazz, like, say, Musou.

the bigger problem I have with GtA4's graphics is that the style isn't that unique.  they're going for a realistic style while SA and VC got their time periods down really well and that kind of made up for the sub-dreamcast textures.  I only played it on PC at highest everything but the graphics could never look good.  with GTA4 they're going for a realistic look and that's stupid considering it'll be completely destroyed in everything compared to modern realistic games.  especially considering the bad framerate.

TVC: You aren't impressed with *any* of the visuals in the latest trailer? =/

I guess it doesn't bother me because I don't think I've ever yawned playing a GTA game. I find them always fun no matter when, so I think I can count on GTAIV being just as fun.

You have your preferences and I have mine i guess.

I just hope I'm not the only playing when it comes out. I want to play with some peeps in mutliplayer.

Oh, believe me I will invest a couple of hundred hours in this game for sure. Cause like many people already know, GTA is all about free roaming, and I'm gonna have a blast at this like in the previous 5 games.

But it's just that I wish the series would mature a little bit. They can fill the entire game with jokes/references parodies and funny commercials and talkshows, but the interaction between the characters should change. Now that I'm saying this, it reminds me of GTA3. Then VC took the comedy road and SA did the same. If the game just could have kept the dramatic tone of the first GTA4 trailer, I would have been glad.

Still, I believe this is the core of GTA and maybe making it all too serious would have been bad, so we'll see.

I wish for better character interaction as well. One of the things I hate about GTA is that you don't get to see the characters outside of missions. Apparently, they are trying to remedy this, and you can now call up any character you want and hang out a bit, play mini games, or whatever and learn more about the character.

I agree with what you're saying, but basing all that on the trailer just really feels like premature judgment.
