Kane and Lynch
« on: December 09, 2007, 05:21:58 PM »
I just finished Kane and Lynch, it took me the whole weekend. It was a short yet very enjoyable ride. I really, REALLY liked the storyline; it felt straigh out of a Micheal Mann movie. The shooting was servicable, it worked fine. I really liked the different type of missions, you werent exactly doing the same thing across the game; the change of spacing was really appreciated.

The first two levels of the game feel a bit rough, gameplay wise, but you get into the mood and vibe of the game real quick

The game felt really cinematic, except for a very few 'wtf' moments that reeks of rushed devs such as the part after Tokyo where Kane goes 'we have to go Panana to find a friend'; next thing you know, you're halfway thru a firefight with Lynch complaining. That part was just awkward; what the fuck happened and how come I'm dressed like a commando? The overall lenght of the game is a bit short, but I honestly have no idea what they could had added to the story.

Kane and Lynch are really interesting characters, they reminded me a lot of George Clooney and Quentin Tarantino in From Dusk Till Damn. I really got into the storyline and went 'wtf' at some of Lynch's antics just like Kane would (like the scene where he's gunning down the hostages at the bank).

Good sound design, the music was good (very Mann-ish), but some of the sound effects of the guns (like the m243) felt oddly strange; almost underpowered or muted.

If you ignore the internet drama around this game, it's a solid action game, fans of shooting titles such as Max Payne and The Punisher will really enjoy the game for what it is. It wont change your world, but It's certainly enjoyable.

I tested the PS3 versions and there were a few slowdowns especially in those giant firefights such as the Tokyo Hotel escape where theres like hundreds of people running out and around in the streets while you engage cops. I *REALLY* enjoyed that part, it was awesome to run away from the cops by running between crashed cars and into the bus stations; like I said, the action sets are awesome.

The game has two endings; good endings too if only a bit on the short side; which is a same considering how great the writing was all thru the game.

Not a modern classic, but a really enjoyable ride except for some rough spots; 8/10.

What with the Freedom Fighters comparisons I have seen, I am curious to try it out, but due to finances being stretched a bit thin, I'll have to wait a month until I can buy it for 3 dollars.

I can't, banned at GAF until like the summer or something. Feel free to copy paste my review and pass it as your own, I really don't mind.

Kane and Lynch's achievements fail solely on the fact that you have to get #1 and #2 on the Leaderboard (two seperate achievements) -- thats a HUGE no-no among the community

Glad someone else spoke it, I was starting to feel like the only person who played it. The game has a ton of great, FUCK YEAH action moments. Absolutely worth your time, but the very definition of a rental.

I was really blown away by it. Most of the set pieces are extremely exciting. Kane & Lynch are such daring characters, they don't have an aura of purity and perfection that surrounds them like other videogame heroes. Instead, they're unlikeable, selfish, they fumble and they mess their schemes up again and again and again. Everything about them is dirty and fucked up beyond belief.

It's nice to see that a game finally accomplished something so hardcore. I'm glad that IO went in that direction.

Yes the gameplay is a bit poorly conceived at times, but it seems to me that many IO games were designed similarly in the past. I think that these faults and design flaws end up being so cheesy that they're even enjoyable.

I tried the demo on PS3 and also felt that there was potential there BUT the aiming was TERRIBLE.  The deadzone was far too large and really damaged the gunplay (which would have otherwise been decent).  Is there an option for adjusting the deadzone in the full game (or at least tweaking the aim to some point)?

Also, what about multiple console versions?  The PS3 demo seemed nice enough, but the framerate did not hold throughout.  I wonder how it compares on 360?
