The talk on GFW Radio has made me kind of nervous about this game, they kind of imply it sucks and nobody is playing it. Its location on Gamespy Stats http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/ makes me suspicious -- are the system reqs too high or does it just suck?

- RSX
- free online
- dedicated servers

early impressions seem to indicate that this turned out good.

Or at least the user known as Alpha Snake at GAF thinks so.

I wouldn't normally trust Alpha since he's a Sony fanboy that operates a Sony fansite.  However, from what I've read from reliable sources, UT3 on PS3 is quite nicely done.  Still, the PS3 ver. can't even come close to duplicating the UT experience on a decent PC.  A $1000 PC can easily run UT3 at higher framerates/resolutions than the PS3.  The PS3 ver. is locked at 30fps which no self-respecting PC gamer would even play at.  You really should get a PC since you seem to be a big fan of shooters.

Aside from technical differences, the PS3 will probably be inferior to the PC and 360 versions simply because it'll be harder to find good games on the PS3.  Smaller userbase=less games.  It's that simple.

Here are some other impressions;

Unreal Tournament 3 PS3 Quick Impressions
by Chris Remo Dec 10, 2007 8:16pm CST
Despite its strong PC heritage, Unreal Tournament 3 has become one of the more anticipated games in the PlayStation 3's holiday lineup, due to its vaguely exclusive status (the Xbox 360 version won't be out until some time next year, and may not feature user mod support like the PS3 version does). I loaded the retail PS3 version, which releases tomorrow, for some quick impressions of its control options and general feel.

Everything looks up to the standards of a high-end PC. This might be of importance to behind-the-times PC gamers looking for a way to run the game with nice visuals and a solid framerate.

On that note, mouse and keyboard control is supported. I had no problems getting my keyboard recognized, but I had to unplug and plug in the mouse and change the USB port I was using several times before it was recognized, so watch out for that. You can use the keyboard for basic menu navigation, but you can't actually fully navigate all menus with it, which smacks of laziness.

Once you're in the game, however, the mouse and keyboard are fully functional. You can specify whether you'd like to see servers with just controller players, just mouse/keyboard players, or both. Sensitivity and keyboard key mappings (but not mouse button mappings) are fully customizable, as are controller mappings. It accepts input from all devices simultaneously, so you can even use the left side of the controller for analog movement and the mouse for aiming, though it would take some creative remapping.

The game really does feel totally different depending on which configuration you use. Put simply, it feels like a PC game with the mouse. It doesn't quiet feel as fast as the PC version of UT3, though--Epic commented prior to release that the speed of the PS3 version was slowed down slightly, and that seems to be the case. It doesn't bother me at all. (Note that I am not indicating there is any kind of framerate "slowdown" or other performance issue; it is the pace of the game itself to which I am referring.)

Still, you can turn the controller sensitivity and acceleration up to a ridiculous degree, moreso than most console games. Of course, if you're at that level, it's probably time to learn to use a mouse.

You can use the Sixaxis' motion sensing to control the hoverboards, but I'm not sure why you'd want to. Even as a novelty, it's unwieldy.

Main vehicle control is customizable, but thankfully defaults to Halo-like relative steering, which works much better with the controller.

Server browsing is similar to the PC, with the ability to filter by various game options. You can specify whether you want to restrict your choices to dedicated servers. When creating a multiplayer game, you can choose to host as a dedicated server, and dedicated PS3 servers can be run from PCs as well.

User mod and map content is of course a feather in UT3 PS3's cap, being a practically unheard of feature on consoles. PC users can create content and export it for PS3, then load it onto a USB drive or PS3-compatible memory card (SD, CompactFlash, or Memory Stick as long as you've got the right PS3 model) and import it in the game. You can also download mods directly from the dedicated servers using them. Since the game isn't technically out yet at the time of writing, I wasn't able to find anything, but it's an appreciated feature and one that should help with the game's longevity.

Frankly, it wouldn't surprise me if UT3 on PS3 outsold the game on PC--at least initially. The strong existing PC community will be a huge asset on PC long-term, but right out of the gate UT3 occupies a unique space on PS3 and has a lot of hype among PS3 gamers looking for titles that make their console stand out.

Meanwhile, PC gamers have a lot on their plate and UT3 hasn't generated the same hype the series has in the past. That said, it's a great bit of old-school fast-paced FPS action that will be fresh to console players and seems like a good alternative option for existing fans of the series whose PCs aren't up to snuff.

Picked this game up about an hour ago and have been playing almost non stop.  Allow me to get something out of the way before I really even get started about the game...

There WILL be comparisons between this and Gears of War.  It's just plain inevitable.  From the first cut scene in the single player campaign, it's extremely fucking obvious that the guys behind Gears of War made this game.  Whether it be the main character that looks exactly like Dominic Santiago or the black guy, Othello, that sounds EXACTLY like the Cole Train or even the way subtitles appear at the bottom of the screen, the first thing that pops into mind when playing this game is in fact "Gears of War".  So, to compare the two, despite the fact that they actually totally different games, is really not that far fetched...

Now, about the graphics.  Mark Rein really wasn't lying.  The game looks better than Gears of War.  I believe I've heard the term "Gears of War on steroids" used on this forum before, and that would be a very valid and correct assessment.  The game looks GREAT, with absolutely NO framerate problems AT ALL.  The game is fucking GORGEOUS.  Because I'm praising the game's visuals though, don't think that it's the second coming of Christ in terms of visual prowess.  It looks better than Gears, but honestly, I had a bigger boner for Gears when it came out just because it was sooooo far and away ahead of any game visually at the time.  Gears was revolutionary, this is evolutionary.  The game looks stunning and anyone that has said UE 3 can't run on PS3 at good framerates and high settings has just been pwned.

The gameplay is great, and as a huge Unreal Tournament fan, I feel right at home.  It's sooooo fucking good to play next gen UT.  It's so fast paced that there's not much time to think, you just have to own everything in sight.  Of course, I am still getting used to using the PS3 controller, which I do feel is inferior to the XBOX 360 controller for FPS games.  The sticks just don't feel as comfortable as the XBOX 360 controller.  I'm getting used to it, but it's been a while since I've played an FPS on the PS3, so I'll pick things up here in a little bit.  I would use a keyboard and mouse, but the cords are only a few feet long on my kb/m and I'm sitting like 7-8 feet away from the TV, so it's not really practical.  Perhaps I'll buy some USB extension cords or something.  Regardless, the game feels like UT, no question about it, and if you're a Unreal Tournament fan that doesn't feel like upgrading your PC, BUY THIS FUCKING GAME.

There's a few different modes, Campaign, Online, and Instant Action.  Campaign is basically just a bunch of strung together exhibition matches, Online is well, online, and Instant Action is basically just an exhibition mode where you can play with bots and set up match types to suit your preference.

Now, on to something that REALLY troubles me about this game....

The audio quality in this game is SHIT.  TOTAL FUCKING SHIT.  WHO THE FUCK WAS ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL AT EPIC???  Sound effects, dialogue, music, etc. reminds me of the fucking N64 era where it feels like the sounds have been mixed in a fucking tin can.  I'm going to give Epic the benefit of the doubt and say that they mixed the sound at a quality of 64 kbps MP3 MAXIMUM.  The sound quality is so fucking bad I truly feel like I need to give this a good paragraph of straight up bitching just because it's such a huge disappointment.  It's really not acceptable, at all, especially with all the fucking space on the Blu Ray disc...  No, not every game needs 7.1 Uncompressed (even though this is probably one of the games that DOES), but NO FUCKING GAME on XBOX 360 or Playstation 3 should have 64 kbps MP3 quality audio.  The audio in this game is without a doubt the WORST quality audio I've heard in a game in a very very very long time, and I can say WITH CERTAINTY that it's the worst I've heard this generation.

Still though, audio problems aside, the game is fucking bad ass as shit and it's still worth a buy.  I can't wait to kick some of your asses on PSN, it's worth it.  I haven't had a chance to play online yet, but Midway IS hosting dedicated servers, so I'll give it a shot once I finish the campaign and fuck around with some Insant Action maps to learn the levels a little bit.  I would rate this game AAA, but I MUST subtract an A because of the shit quality audio.

Worldwide, the PC version should sell more since non-NA PS3 owners are less likely to care about UT.  Still, it'll be kinda strange if the PC version sells less in the US.  I hope that doesn't happen since PC support has already been on the decline in the last few years.  FPS, MMORPG, RTS are the few genres that you expect to do well on the PC.

So far id say.....

1.) If you are a UT fan - must buy hands down.
2.) If you want something new in a shooter or something more fast pacd with crazy jumps, etc - you should rent
3.) If you are one of those realism military shooter fans - AVOID.

The campaigns cutscene story is pretty meh....

I cant wait to play hours of capture the flag

Shadowrun didn't even deliver "ownings from above" like this game does...and it had the perfect formula with its glider wings and shotgun...

In most modern realistic shooting games you need to be careful, sneaky, take cover etc....whats great about UT is you play it fast and own 3-10 people in a row nonstop charging enemies like a madman....if you try to be a sneaky taco you die.

finally a fun rocket launcher again that you can use as your primary weapon

Can you set the gravity in the online matches?

I even doubt that, considering the max load is ridiculously low. The market on PC is pretty busy this year. On PS3 I guess not so much...but I don't know how vibrant the PS3 COD4 scene is. We'll see come NPD. If it isn't 200k strong, then it's nothing.

TF2 on PS3 is dead as a doornail I'd wager.

Hey AV - why did you say I was being an asshole by saying I couldn't believe they have a 350Z with AT?

I do not see the point and didnt know the sled existed honestly.

I dont buy 2 seaters anyway....i was never a sports car kinda guy. I want the big car with the tech amenities.

Also whats yer beef with an 08 maxima? I alternate between the Maximas and various models of infiniti.

They are my fav. Right now I have an Infiniti G35 and my old 2001 5th gen Maxima. I was thinking of updating the maxima. Why not go 08 from 01? You got insight or are you just being bitter/bitchy?

Because it's silly to think a mainstream car won't offer an auto. See Porsche example.

Anywho, 10:1 the Maxima is redesigned for '09, and there are better large cars than the Maxima on the market right now. I was going to say to get a G8, but you already have a G35, so I guess you want a fwd winter car?

the more i play this the more it is becoming my fav online shooter this gen.

I didnt realize how I missed the days of constantly running thru a map like a poltergeist in an 80's movie killing 20 mofo's in a row with rockets or that flak cannon....I still fucking hate the bio-rifle.

I have played some of the warfare games now - and while i havent tried the vehicles too much, i am not a huge fan of the hoverboard.

The sweet-spot for my ultimate fun so far is 8 player deathmatch...

we need more arcade shooters like this.

ok i officially do not care too much for

- the vehicles

- the maps with vehicles...

Warhawk, Socom 3/combined assault and even battlefront do it better. - way better,.....

What i do like...

- deatmatch
- team deathmatch
- capture the flag
- duel

if you play without the vehicles you get the classic unreal teleport gun.
