People and rap music.
« on: December 10, 2007, 11:13:36 PM »
It's weird how people act sometimes.

In the past week or so; I've been listening to old school wu classics and various solo efforts by the members while working on stuff; and as some people may know; MSN will show whatever media player is playing right now to your friend list, so I had all the tracks from GZA's Liquid Sword playing one after the other. I've got a wild range of taste in music, the week before I was totally immersed in trance, the week before, it was oldschool trip-hop, and I even got deep into those cheesy 'emo rock + '80 electroc' bands just because I wanted to discover what the hype was about and to hear new sounds and stuff.

In my circle of friend, I'm the 'music fan'. But ever since I started my descent into the wu-tang clan extended biography, I've gotten tons of distinguished mentally-challenged comments from my real life friends over my selection of music. People being shocked at me listening to that kind of music, people making lots of underhanded racist references; tons of 'lol rap = crap' or people just wondering what the hell is wrong with me. I've never had so many comments about my music selection ever since I got into this.

I was always a big fan of rap music, not just as open about it as my other tastes. I'm not a wigger, I'm just a regular, non-nerd, tech white person that happens that kind of music a lot, without embracing the lifestyle at all. I wanna get into blue and jazz over the chrismas break.

What is it about rap music that gets other people so distinguished mentally-challenged about it? Is it the bad stereotypes and stigmas? Or is it really the whole racial 'white people should not be listening to rap music, it's for black people only!' thing? It's weird how disappointed I was at some people I know over how they acted over this thing.. It was easy to make them feel like distinguished mentally-challenged fellows over their comments, but still, eh.

It's weird.

Personally, I think it more or less depends on how serious you take the lifestyle. Liking rap from a detached, suburban white standpoint, I can't see anything wrong with (as a matter of fact I enjoy quite a number of rap songs and I'm the quintessential suburban upper middle class whitey), but when these people act all hard and thuggish and try to copy the lifestyle, pretend they're from the streets when they're really from Smithtown and it's 95% white population, that's when I get annoyed :P

I dont get rap. Most of it is urban and I lived in the suburbs. I cant really relate to much of any of it. Course I like a few songs here and there if they are good natured and are something I can relate to on a basic level.

Bitches hos n cops n cruisin n whatever...wtf, I just dont get any of that.

Wow, screw anyone that shits on Liquid Swords. Mainstream hip hop in general has become really mind numbingly terrible lately and just seems like some sort of weird social engineering thing to try and make minority type folks into complete idiots and all that, sure, but LS is fuck awesome.

Liquid Swords :bow

A lot of it has to do with the way rap is presented. MAF really attests to this idea that rap is just bitches n hoes, violence, crime, etc, ie stuff black people can apparently relate to more than anyone else. I'm not saying that MAF takes that exact position, but many people do. It's seen as simplistic "noise". Mainstream rap certainly doesn't help. Today mainstream rap is quite disposable. You listen to it at a party, have it as a ringtone, put it on your Myspace...but in 3 months you move on to the new hot thing, totally forgetting your previous favorites; why do you think so many rappers release albums every year? They can't afford to be forgotten. Disposable music

On this messageboard most people like music that isn't played on the radio or MTV. The "what are you listening to" and "albums of the year" threads both are filled with indie artists as well as artists who are rather unknown. Certainly no one here would dismiss modern rock as all three chord, no talent emo bastards. Rap isn't given the same benefit of the doubt. Instead of acknowledging that there is a huge amount of rap that isn't about bitches and hoes, some would rather pretend that it is to further minimize the genre

When my family first moved into our new house, we spent so much time unpacking that we didn't even try to get food until after midnight. Everywhere was closed, so me and my father had to walk through the Burger King drive thru. :(

I had to walk through a drive thru before.  It was late at night and I had no car but the people in the BK (I think it was a BK) were like "we're closed on the inside" when like a minute before I saw them let in 3 drunk college kids.  So I figured fuck it and I walked around and I saw a homeless guy (he had the clothes for it) also walking through the drive thru and I saw him spit on the back windshield of the car in front of him.  I was so shocked I suddenly stopped walking.  I then kept a 10 foot distance from him and my friends and I started talking about how that was a huge fucking spit.

As for rap music, I've never really cared for what other people think about my music tastes (although most people I know are neck deep in wigger/emo culture) so I do look for whatever artists I hear that I like.  A lot of the people I know are actually the opposite of what shuri talks about in that they try to act all hard and they tell me they'll "never like a rock song more than rap" and I laugh at them for sounding distinguished mentally-challenged.  I think they were actually being serious when they said that.

am nintenho: I find that many rap fans are some of the most close minded music listeners, which is kinda ironic considering so much rap samples other genres. There is this stupid idea that rap is "black" music, and therefore everything else must be "white" music. Which of course is laughable considering how many musical genres are rooted in African/African American origins.

I like all kind of music, from Fiona Apple to MF DOOM to Dio to Justice to Johnny Cash.

most of these niccas don't know who nas is smh, and certainly not Illmatic.

PD: another observation. rap is the only music genre ever where the fans are so goddamn close minded and ignorant that they forget the music's history. All the other black music genres know their history, how come rap rarely acknowledges its history? You'll find tons of young white kids that love classic rock, but rare is it that you will find a young black person who feels 80's and early 90's rap. You, me, and a few others are a rarity.

Dude it's Jay-Z and Nas, they're this generation's Pac and Biggie it seems smh. And I respect both guys

You're 100% right though. New rock fans continue to discover artists like The Beatles and Zeppelin, becoming new fans. In rap you don't see kids looking up Rakim to see where their favorite rapper got the blueprint, or looking up Pete Rock's production to see the evolution of beats. Instead we have a group of "rap fans" who grew up with Eminem and moved to 50 Cent. They'll get into Tupac/Biggie eventually, but they don't go farther than that.

Where's the love for The Infamous, or 36 Chambers, etc? Rap is the ONLY genre where older artists become irrelevent once they get old. The Rolling Stones are the biggest band in the fucking world, and have gained millions of new fans while retaining millions of older ones. Run DMC, Rakim, LL Cool J, Public Enemy, and all the other rap legends could never come close to that success today because rap fans are more interested in what's the hot thing right now. Right now it's snap dances. 15 minutes ago it was colorful, shiny suits

I understand some things are "outdated" today, and it's not hard to see why many kids wouldn't want to listen to Run DMC for instance; they're still crazy for being closed minded, but let's face it that sounds outdated to them. But where's the love for all the classic material that came out in the 90's, which is not outdated.

The idea of "classic" rap albums seems to help introduce the new generation to old classics. With the help of music downloading it's not hard for the average kid to look up The Low End Theory, The Infamous, Only Built for Cuban Linx, Illmatic, The Diary, etc. It pains me when I hear kids say Eminem and Jay-Z are "GOAT" candidates lol

Oh I'm not saying it's outdated, just that it is to many younger fap rans.

The whole native tongues movement really bridged the gap between the 80s and 90s, in part as a response to the gangsta rap that began to dominate the early 90's rap scene.

Midnight Marauders and Low End Theory are both classics :bow

In terms of 80s production, there's lots of great stuff and some meh stuff. So much classic stuff though:

I'm ashamed to admit I'm not well versed on Big Daddy Kane.

Public Enemy beats were always great to me.

I'm quite fond of *some* early 80's hip hop beat. The Message's beat is fucking CLASSIC, and was my ringtone for a goddamn year.

Jay rips off lots of people in terms of lyrics, but when it comes to flow he's almost untouchable. Reasonable Doubt is classic (but nowhere near Illmatic), The Blueprint is classic. But Jay is still too damn pretentious for me. He's far too concerned with his status, and is doing everything he can to be called "the greatest". The thing I hate is that when Jay says something, everyone starts saying it. So if Jay says buy this, people buy it; if Jay says he's the best, people believe it.

There's a difference between paying homage to other people's classic lyrics and straight up stealing. His latest target: Eminem

(beginning of first verse)

That's pretty laughable. But the funny thing is, it's still a good song. But the problem is that many young kids today listen to Jay and credit him for all the stuff he jacks ("it's hard to yell when the barrel is in ya mouth...").

i'm not that big on stillmatic. it's good but but a lot of the songs content don't interest me. Plus, dissing peeps like Cormega kinda puts NaS in a bad light. Stillmatic is the album when he basically betrays every fucker who respects him lol

As I said on OA it has a lot of great material, but also some VERY meh songs. Smokin and Your Da Man...eh. Destroy and Rebuild is also meh.

-Intro
-Ether
-Got Yourself A Gun
-Rewind
-One Mic
-2nd Childhood  :o :o
-The Flyest
-What Goes Around

WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND MY nicca. WHAT COMES UP MUST COME DOWN MY nicca :bow

I do what I can do when I can do it
Feel how I feel when I feel what I'm feelin
Live how I live it's only cause I been through it
Learn to try it like to eat it and shit it's nuttin to it
Burn it light it weed it and off the liquor, while drivin outside
I'll never catch a vehicular homicide
My music is a description of my vibe of course
My life, my sites, my thoughts, what I like on my fork
Cause you are what you eat, you eat what you can
You pray to bless the food but first you wash your hands
to wash away them bad spirits, don't bring it in your home

Ok let's get serious up in this bitch.

I discovered rap in middle school. I found out that I loved the whole gangsta rap attitude in the music. For me, it has always been about the beat/melody and the delivery of the lines. I don't care what the lyrics are about, I almost never did with any genre of music I listen to. And to be honest, I can barely understand half of it. Understand as in 'I can't hear what they say'. Of course I started with 2pac like everybody else. Still consider him as the best rapper of all time and listen to it occassionally. Later on I was more into the New York sound of rap. Ruff Ryders became one of my favorites because of Lox's catchy beats. I always saw Nas as one of the top 5 greatest rappers of all time. I am... was such a perfect album for me, but it's weird how no one really likes that one. They always mention Illmatic or whatever, that album didn't do much to me. I'm really not into all too lyrical albums and that's why I dislike underground rap. Although there are some great ones inbetween like Atmosphere.

There's anothing thing that I really loved but realized how everybody hated it, and that's No Limit and Cash Money Records. Yeah, they are a bunch of jokers and fake-gangsters but their beats were awesome. Mystikal, Kane&Abel, C-Murder, Mr Magic, Mannie Fresh, Baby, BG, Lil Wayne, Juvenile....I loved the way these guy sounded. No Limit was different, their beats were very melodic and eerie most of the time. I think that's what interested me the most about them. For Cash Money it was those fast percussion(?) taps on the background. I'm not sure if I used the right word here.
Capone N Noreaga were also great with their The Reunion album. I started to hate Noreaga after Capone went to jail and he had his whole silly solo-career with goofy songs using silly catchphrases the entire damn time.
And then there is Eminem of course, may be my favorite one of the bunch. This whole story I've been writing isn't in a very chronological way and I'm missing out on a lot, but Eminem was one my first. He went downhill after 8 Mile. But goddamn, I listened to The Marshal Mathers LP and The Eminem Show soooooo much.

Yup, I discovered this too. While I could appreciate rap from every era, most guys listened to the current albums. I remember one time when I was at my nephew's place and dl'ed Straight Outta Compton for him. He listened to it for 20 seconds and bursted out 'this fucking sucks'. The rage I felt at that moment was so big. And he listened to shit like Fabolous and Lil Zane :lol

Nowadays 2pac, Mobb Deep and Nas are pretty much the only rap I ever listen to. I grew out of the genre and am into Metal.
