KINGDUMB UNDA FIYAA Circle Of Doom
« on: December 12, 2007, 03:39:58 AM »
My copy just came in!   :o

Any J-Gaffers getting this today or tomorrow?  A friend of mind played the game early and wasn't so keen on it.  Got my fingers crossed.

Yeah, the Korean version.  Play-Asia had it Friday with a confirmation of 100% English, so I went ahead and ordered it.  With UPS shipping, it was STILL about the same price the Japanese version will cost.   :lol

It's just okay so far, nothing special.  I picked a "fast" character, and it still plays slowly.  The game is more hack/slash and get loot than it is a beat-em-up.  BUT it does offer online co-op play for what appears to be up to three players.

Played up to the second save area.  Here's my initial impressions.

Circle Of Doom is a mediocre hack n' slash game.  The focus seems to be on getting lots of items and loot, and improving stats.  There's even online leaderboards. The game play is done on more beat-em-up style linear pathways, however; there doesn't seem to be any sort of central hub or town to go and talk to non-player characters at.  Instead, you will come across small areas with a deity present, allowing you to talk to it to buy and sell items, or synchronize weapons and armor.  (I have no idea what this does)  You can also choose to go to new areas, once available, and go to sleep at these points.  Sleeping takes you into a dreamworld, where the camera is close-up and the frame rate and game speed and dreadfully SLOW.  Luckily the only point of this area seems to be to talk to a few NPCs, learn new abilities (which are earned by doing side-quests, killing specific types of enemies), and save your progress.

There are five playable characters; not sure if you can unlock more.  I chose Celine, a "fast" character, although despite this description, she seems slow.  The combat is clunky; it's less Dynasty Warriors and more like a PC point-and-click action RPG or MMORPG.  You have two attack buttons, although these are not light and hard attack buttons.  Instead, you choose from different weapon types, with each weapon handling and comboing differently.  Some also have attributes such as counter-attacking, which is nice since there's no way to defend or roll to evade attacks.  You can also equip projectile weapons such as bows or slings, and pressing the L trigger takes you to a behind-the-back view with an aiming reticule.  You have to use the right analog stick to aim, which is a little difficult since X and A are used for attacks, but it also lets you easily strafe back and forth to avoid any incoming enemy projectiles.  Two different skills can also be equipped; there are a ton to learn and they are classified under beginner, intermediate, and expert.

All attacks and special skills take skill points to be used.  There are small meters on the bottom of the screen that show your skill points; all weapons and abilities take different levels of the meter, which when not used will fill up depending on the skill points used. This is why the combat feels clunky, since certain weapons will only allow for a hit or two before being depleted.

The game's sound is pretty decent; music is good so far and the voice acting isn't too bad, but visually, it has issues, particularly with the camera.  The character models look good, but are very "shaky" during cut scenes, and some of the backgrounds objects and textures are downright awful:

You will occasionally run into views like this one:

Fortunately, clicking the right stick will ALWAYS center the camera right behind you, but this is still an annoying issue nonetheless.

I need to play more of this game first, but right now I'd probably give this a 6/10.  The online co-op sounds good, and if that's well done, this game is at least a 7 or 7.5 title.  With so many other awesome games out right now, I'd probably pass on this game at full price and try it when it's cheap.  It's nowhere near as bad as Ninety-Nine Nights was, but it's still not that great...it feels like a strange fusion of a Musou game and a point-and-click Diablo clone.

yeah, just go create a hotmail account with s.korea as your location and use a random postal code from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_postal_codes_in_South_Korea , worked fairly easy for me, you don't really have to deal with any korean letters

1 month free when you create a new account, pretty fucking silly since with that all of the "exclusive" demos and themes can be downloaded by anyone.

that said i didn't like the demo at all, didn't really feel any incentive to get to the next part or level up - what's up with only having pp, hp and luck to choose between when distributing points? i need more customization than that. if i don't hear glowing remarks about the 4 player i can't see myself picking this up really.

Where did I say that?  I don't hate it, but this game has issues that drag it down.  I don't like clunky, slow combat and a camera that sets itself to hide the action from you by putting trees/shrubbery or dead enemies in your way so you can't see what the hell is going on

Blim Blim on GAF feels the same way I do about the game; he said he thinks it will be a LOT more fun in multiplayer, and I agree.  The problem is finding a game to play in right now.

I don't know what you are expecting from this game, but I was thinking it was going to be something like N3 or a Musou game.  It's not, and while I can appreciate the differences, the execution could have been a lot better.  But these are all my initial impressions.

Basara 2 is a pure action game, plain and simple.  Have you even played it?  It is the best "Musou" game ever made, period.  Can't say it enough....Capcom just got it right, but this is only with Basara *2*.  The first game sucks shit through a straw.

why would you expect this game to be like n3 or musou? every preview has said this is a dungeon crawling hack-and-slasher. hence: HOW IS THE LOOT

The problem is that it doesn't present itself as a dungeon crawler.  It has the look of a hack and slash action game in terms of enemy encounters and level progression, but then dungeon crawler hack and slash game play.  So far, I've just found a bit of gold and then various weapons, including weapons meant for other characters (Which you cannot use), and some accessories like rings and shirts (That all look the same).  Pretty standard stuff for the beginning of a dungeon crawler, I think.  Synthesizing items makes their skill point bar decrease, I believe, so that you can have a longer stamina bar for attack time.

I'm eager to try this online with a few others; hopefully this is well-done and hopefully the level design gets better than "Walk forward.  Encounter.  Repeat."

I love games like Baldur's Gate DA and the Champions games, but this game doesn't play as smoothly as those titles do.  Sticking strictly with console games, it reminds me a little more of PSO, but every weapon only has one single, slow-hitting combo.  No variations in attacks.  Whether or not levelling changes that, I don't know.  I really want to read more people's impressions and see if I have missed anything.  First thing I'm doing the next time I play this is trying out the other characters, too.  Maybe the one I chose just sucks.

You guys should set up a Korean account and try out the demo.

it looks like a diablo clone to me, only in 3D. most hack-and-slashers -- well, the good ones -- throw a metric asstonne of enemies on the screen.

I'll chalk this up to my own misguided expectations and just avoid it cleanly.

Who is "they?"  I never saw much about this game before release other than screenshots and trailers, none of which made the game out to be what it is.

And PLEASE try the demo before you start up a KUF defense force.  It's not like I'm the only one whose played the game saying it has problems...I have yet to see a post from someone NOT saying that.  :P

It's nothing like N3 or a Dynasty Warriors game, for that matter.  Keep this in mind!   :)

I think the U.S. release date is pretty soon.  January 8th, sez Gamefaqs.

This is from Gamefaqs:

Quote
Looking at my Famitsu right now (12/21/2007 issue). The reviewers gave KuF: CoD 7,7,8,7 (pg. 43). The mini-questionaire filled out from makers of the game listed it designed for fans of action games and/or dark fantasy games. They listed the average playtime as over ten hours.

Really quickly - the first reviewer mentioned that as an action RPG - the system is a bit dated. Collecting the items to create your own equipment was quite fun but the biggest drawback to the game was the cooperative online play. Despite it being 'cooperative' there were no other objectives than clearing the stage of the enemies. Even on some of the bigger maps - have more than on player participate didn't really add anything to the game.

The second reviewer stated that even though the game is billed as a '3-D action' game, it's more Diablo-esque than anything (yay!). The weapons and armor come with random attribute and skills boosts so going around and collecting the best was quite fun. The only problem they had with the game was that other than the boss fights - dispatching the typical enemy didn't take much strategy and the play could get a bit repetitive. Compared to some of the other games in the same genre - there isn't a lot of room for character growth either.

The third reviewer gave this game an '8'. She said that it was a harder game to just jump into for beginners but that it doesn't take too long to get used to it. Being able to just wade through the enemies was pretty enjoyable but while you could control the camera yourself - there were some sticky points in terms of camera angles at times. Trading items with your friends in cooperative mode was a bit of a pain but overall it (cooperative) was pretty enjoyable.

The last reviewer praised KuF for it's high character customization. Unfortunately, the interface for sorting through your stored items and synthesizing (or constructing or putting together - I'm not sure what actually appears in the game) your own items was not very well done and often took a lot of time. The loading time when you select the 'sleep' option was also annoying. He recommends playing online with people you can chat with. The action aspect of the game is quite enjoyable and stays fairly fresh even after repeated playings.

Hope this helps. I'll get it just for the random dungeons and items. I'll probably get it tomorrow, now I just need a way to keep my fiance from noticing....
