Newspaper photographer nabbed for molesting girl on train
A newspaper photographer who molested a 17-year-old girl on a train in Tokyo, saying he was prompted by information on the Internet, has been arrested, police said.
The 28-year-old, Tsutomu Yamane, a photographer at the Tokyo headquarters of the Chunichi Shimbun newspaper company, was arrested on suspicion of violating a Tokyo prefectural ordinance forbidding people from creating a public nuisance.
Investigators accuse Yamane of lifting up the skirt of a 17-year-old girl on a train on the Saikyo Line while the train was stopped at JR Ikebukuro Station shortly after 7 p.m. on Tuesday, and groping her buttocks.
"On the Internet it said that you could freely grope people on the Saikyo Line so I did it," police quoted Yamane as saying. Police said that the 28-year-old had finished work and was on his way home at the time.
Newspaper officials said they would deal with the matter strictly.
"We're still confirming the facts, but if this is true we want to deal with this strictly," said Ichizo Kawatsu, deputy head of the editorial division of the Tokyo Shimbun, which is published by the Chunichi Shimbun company.
