it's like the only year there's been this many good FPS games.  it's probably just a coincidence.  Like there's not that many FPS games I can think of in the future.

No, etoilet, you fail.  You are as usual, on a higher horse than even me, except you can't back it up.  Lack of genres?  There's more variety on the 360 than there is the Wii.  The lack of genres complaint in comparing the Wii to the 360 is invalid.  As in there's more variety basically everywhere else.  Except maybe the PS3.

I did back it up. I gave examples, I made my point YET AGAIN. Everyone wanted to jump in from a stereotypical perspective and fell flat on their face. You even resort to making a comparison between Wii and 360, when console comparisons were never a part of it. I never specified consoles, only genres. I only specified my gaming tastes and something I always found odd.

What do sales numbers have to do with the quality of games, or the variety of genres?  Come on, you're a Nintendo fan, you had to cook up all sorts of reasons to cover this one from the N64 to the GC days.  Here's a hint, they don't matter in regards to quality or variety, unless you're a dumbass fanboy and you need a reason to defend your NERDDOM!

If sales matter I could say that Wii Play is the BEST game on the Wii, and that it will end up as the BEST game of the generation, but no one here believes taht to be even remotely true.

And don't forget that the High School Musical 2 soundtrack is so much better than the godawful newest Shins album, because come on, sales numbers MATTER IN REGARDS TO QUALITY.  Well, that one might actually be true.

High sales of FPS will lead to more FPS games being approved for they have a higher chance of sales and thus profitability. When sales were high for 2d fighters during the mid-90s, many companies were making fighters. Now they do not sale and there are far less 2d fighters on shelves. It really does impact genre variety.

It really hasn't in the past decade plus that FPSes have been popular.  There's been plenty of everything else, plenty of GREAT everything else, as a matter of fact.  The rise of the FPS has nothing to do with the death of PC gaming.

I always find it weird how people can play very similar games one after another. I'd probably get Orange Box and be settled, but people buy the same fps or jrpg one after another. FPS on 360 is  $$$$$$.

And Uncharted made its game title infamous.
I'm always surprised how Wii owners can buy no games month after month.

Except for, you know, 1.1 Million copies of Mario Galaxy and 425k copies of Guitar Hero III.

Last gen adventure/action titles saw a dropoff. They have started stronger this gen, but GTA like games sort of became their replacement. I would say even that games that were other genres had their own gameplay changed to match that popular GTA trend, such as the Jak series.

I don't think anyone's doubting that, but I don't see what that particularly has to do with the dicussion, aside from that gaming goes through fads, always has and always will, and no gameplay fad has ever been responsible for an industry downturn in the past.

It's been 10 years since the N64 came out, and if you didn't like Nintendo then - chances are you don't like them now. Why is this an argument? Console fansboys really should have died out in 2001 or so. Sales numbers are just nothing more than interesting information, and some people use them to place an objective argument on something subjective. And since its subjective, you really can't make an argument of fact on anything thats better. Someone could argue to death something that you think sucks is good, but you can't prove it either way. It's a futile effort. Go spend your energy doing something more fruitful.

Well I think it did really hurt PC gaming and I just don't think part of the community wants to admit to it. I know there is different mindsets to improving games, and the one which is mostly extended the current game has no problem with it, but for those that want to invent from the current game it creates a problem. For people like that and myself, it hurt PC gaming.

Also, I am not sure what discussion others think is going on. You keep bringing up things I never brought in. I said I don't understand buying very alike games every month and that it would get redundant for me.
I then said that FPS games on 360 sell.

Well, it didn't hurt the PC sector, and that's a fact.  PC gaming suffered a downturn because a national economic downturn made people stop buying PCs for a few years, and in the intervening years, console gaming got HUGE.  PC FPSes were largely already on a downturn by that point.  Get your facts straight.

You clearly know nothing about PC gaming if you think it died in 97, when FPSes were king in the PC world.  PC gaming died in 2000 and 2001, when Tribes-like team-based multiplayer games were king, not that the genre of popular games at the time had ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE DEATH. You. Know. Nothing about what you speak.

I thought the userbases were fairly even by now in the US? Somebody find these numbers. I don't keep up-to-date with sales-age. Regardless, COD4 had to compete with Halo 3, AC, ME and GH3. Mario Galaxy had to compete with GH3....and Wii Play.

I kinda blame the PS2 for the decline in PC gaming.  Even knowledgeable devs like John Carmack got hoodwinked into thinking that the PS2 was going to be way beyond PC hardware for 4-5 years.  That was about the time when development started to slow down for the PC.  The PS2 was a great machine but the hype about it was just ridiculous.

What I said:

Quote
Consoles have gone through it before with fighters and rpgs post-ff7, but since this time it feels close to what hurt PC gaming I guess I am a little more worried because PC gaming never got over it like how the public got over fighters during those years.

So it hurt PC gaming, hurt it in regards to genre and still PC gaming lacks in genre now. This hurts the quality of PC gaming I would say.

Also, you mentioned my high horse, which I am going to assume you refer to as a thing of pride. There is my assumption. You've made plenty. Assumptions are what was people's mistake on the first page. It is the third page now, and by now you should realize people made some poor assumptions. Don't let pride get in the way unless you want a higher horse than me.

As far as I can tell these are things I did not say that others have claimed in just three pages:
-Nintendo is awesome and the Wii is genre king
-Sales are reflective of a game's quality
-FPS killed PC gaming(at least financially)

The lack of genre isn't what put PC gaming in its present state!  And it doesn't really have a lack of genre so much as it has a lack of content in general.

Much like console gaming, it only has a lack of genres if you base all your info off of SALES NUMBERS and what meathead mass market gamers are playing.

PC gaming was never just about the FPS.  There are many reason why PC gaming is on the decline.  Many of PC's strengths are also its biggest weaknesses.  For example, 3rd party content and deep replayability make PC games great but at the same time, it also means people don't need to buy new games as quickly.  It all comes down to money.  Companies aren't going to give the PC market top priority when console development is more profitable.

What are you talking about?

I don't know how much PC sales are hurting or whatever - but IMO the emergence of a substitute product in the next gen consoles (360 mainly, PS3 to a much lesser extent) is what would hurt the PC. This is similar to the early to mid 90's when arcades were hot with games with better graphics than could be offered on a console - fighting games is the best example. So people were going to the arcades for that experience.

PC is similar in that consoles (360 is the best example) are now offering both the similar games on PC and an online service comparable. There will always be The Sims and World of Warcraft and stuff on PC that will never die, but the consoles have caught up a ton in graphics, online service, and comparable games so it is now a legitimate substitute product. Go read your Porter's Five Forces and it fits perfectly.

Go read your Porter's Five Forces and it fits perfectly.

This is pretty accurate, but PC gaming was doubly hurt because of the economic downturn in the tech industry at the turn of the century, and the national economic climate turning to shit.  PC gaming, while not as expensive as console fans would have you believe, is still significantly more expensive than console gaming.

Due to the recession, and the way PC hardware has developed since then (the GPU market has really gotten abysmal), I don't think a true recovery is possible unless there is a large initiative between, say, MS, one of the GPU makers (not likely right now), and a large number of development houses (also not likely, beng that they woul dhave to support a LARGE AMOUNT of them to get the initiative to work).
