the npd threads gotta cool off, do it here! We can discuss what was the best rpg of last gen in a civil manner. There was lots of great Rpgs last gen! talk about which one you like the best or just own me becuase I missed your favourite game!

personally I thought it was Baten Kaitos Origins, such great characters, VA, story and production values, the whole thing was top notch. Probably my favourite battle system in any rpg, ever.

i voted for tales of symphonia, not because it was any good, but because it was the only one i managed to play for more than a few hours

actually it might have been good if they'd dropped the whole jrpg thing and just done a guardian heroes style beatemup

I was all set to vote for Final Fantasy XII (I honestly loved it to death), but then I saw Skies of Arcadia.

The first one was awesome, but I thought Covenant totally improved upon the awesomeness of the original and turned things up to 11.

Voted DQ8, as it was the most well-rounded package for me and I'm a total DQ fanboi. VP2 had an excellent combat system, jawdropping graphics, great music, but the plot was a mess and the 3rd chapter had no story development whatsoever, I also liked the unorthodox approach to progression that VP1 took better than the more linear nature of VP2, plus I actually liked those sob stories in 1. Either VP2 or SH2 is my #2 RPG.

My list would be something like:
1. Dragon Quest 8
2. Shadow Hearts: Covenant
2. Valkyrie Profile 2
3. Skies of Arcadia
4. Dragon Quarter
5. Tales of Symphonia
6. SMT: DDS1

I still have yet to finish TOTA and I haven't even opened up Baten Kaitos: Origins (my game for Christmas break!), Persona 3, or WA5 yet. Have only played like 3 hours of Nocturne, and haven't played DDS2 yet. I own a ton of RPGs from last gen but haven't beaten many, one of my aims for next year is to beat one new RPG a month, the lack of next-gen RPGs means I can catch up on my backlog quite a bit.

How did I miss DQVIII in that list? It's probably one of my favorite games of all time, and yes, aside from VII, I've played through the other DQ titles.

Apart from that, Nocturne is the clear winner. I loved Dragon Quest VIII too even if it was a bit too dumbed down and Disneyified, the feeling of adventuring was still wonderfully conveyed. And then the nearest contenders would be Xenosaga Ep 3, Digital Devil Saga 1 & 2 (wonderful premise and cast of characters), and Skies of Arcadia.

Valkyrie Profile 2 had an awful plot and repetitive gameplay... enter a new town, buy items, exit, kill a few monsters, and then you're not powerful enough and you must grind... until you go in the dungeon, kill the boss... and the process begins anew... some more variety wouldn't have killed

Dragon Quarter's soundtrack was incredible, I wrote a huge thread about the game on NeoGAF a few days ago, overall I really liked it but it had a lot of niggling issues, like the slow combat and poorly explained systems.

FFXII was on the list, but someone has edited my poll and removed that and BKO  :'(

I love the 'Danger Room' music... overall I dont think the soundtrack is as good as vagrant Story's, though
