I purchased Pale Fire

And am going to start reading it after I finish The Golden Compass (so I can piss off my Christian sister by discussing its atheist themes in front of her kids).  is there anything particularly useful I should know/study up on before I begin?

Hmmm, not that I can think of, really. 

If you haven't already, for someone that knows ab it about lit, I would recommend going in as clean as possible without reading too much about the book until after you finish it.  I said to read the wiki before, but if you haven't by now, then it would probably be best if you didn't. lest it sully your first interpretation.

a bit about lit, sorry missed a space there. 

I mean you know a bit about poetry, and you know a bit about literary criticism, which are the only two fields of background that I think are important.  And in the end, neither are really all that important.  It's not a very difficult book to read.

i was reading nabokov's translation of eugene onegin earlier this year, with its immense and idiosyncratic commentary, and it occurred to me that pale fire was a kind of self-parody. i actually think he wrote it shortly afterwards. not that you need to go hunt down his onegin -- it just provides an interesting perspective. anyway, pale fire is probably my favorite novel from the last...call it 80 years. if it is a novel

Oh wow, I never knew about Eugene Onegin.  From the description, I can see why you've come to that conclusion in regards to Pale Fire.  I am interested now.  I'm going to have to check that out!  That sounds really interesting.
