Is it OK to keep a PS3 in an entertainment center like this?
« on: December 14, 2007, 09:35:44 PM »

Hooking up the PS3 for the first time at home, and I'd like to put it where I used to have PS2.

I'd never put 360 in this position, but everyone raves about PS3's low heat and high reliability and all that shit. Thought I'd ask first (it's not hooked up yet).

I can drop the shelf down a few inches if necessary, I figure it is.

Everyone raving about the PS3 having low heat output is lying.  That fucking thing is like a furnace.  It might have great dispersal, but it puts out heat.

How much space is in the rear?

4.5", but there's a cardboard backing with just a little hole.

I play with the glass door open though.

That should help.  I'd just check it every now and again if I were you.  If it ever gets too hot to the touch, then move it somewhere else.  It doesn't need to be open-air or anything, it just needs a little room to breathe.

I don't want the ugly heap on top of the entertainment center with the Wii60. It's an eyesore.

Is it a problem to have it vertical? That's how I've had it since I got it. It definitely won't fit horizontally with the others on top (I've got two big speakers, a switchbox, horizontal 360 and vertical Wii up there already).

Do you think it'd be okay if I moved the shelf down to make 3 inches clearance up top, demi?

Is that your whole setup? Take a bigger picture of the area

Here's my current setup, I would put the PS3 where I have the N64/SNES right now (the wire is gone now that i have my wireless adapter back)

How is the Snes/N64 on that TV of yours, demi?

Old pic:

I'd scrap the DVD player (it doesn't upscale) to drop the stereo shelf down, and the N64 and Dreamcast don't require that much space so I could gain some ground there too.

I don't think the PS3 would be far off from your potential setup if I did that, unless there's some specific concern about it being vertical.

I think you should put it in one of the four bottom areas, and stuff the previous tenant into the closet or something. What are the chances of you pulling out the NES to play something?

it sends a lot of hot air through those top vents, so you should at least give it some more clearance. putting it out in the open would be best, but i guess you don't want to ruin your big shelf of ugly game consoles with an ugly game console

I like having all my shit available to be played. I have the space, so why not? NBA Jam, Bubble Bobble, and Jackal remain popular among some of my friends.

drohne, PS3 is far uglier and (and taller) than 360 or Wii. Plus I'd have a big open gap next to the stereo.

I doubt I'm the first person to place a PS3 within an entertainment center rather than on top of one or on stilts or whatever, I think I'll just drag the shit out and lower the shelves 4 inches or so.

AV, i don't see a problem keeping the PS3 there, airflow/back of the system is hot but unlike the 360, the cooling system is much, much better.

and if it did overheat, the fans will get loud and the system may automatically shut down, when it does one of these two, then it's time to move it somewhere better.

That feature is far more convenient than blue dots and red rings.

Thanks for the info duderinos.

Well, you have three options in this case

* Virtual Console (blech)
* Burn a Dreamcast NES emulator, which runs really good and nice and requires no modchip of any sort, it was very popular with my friends when I brought it over, I've since upgraded to a modded Xbox
* Modded Xbox, if you are knowledgable, but I dont see an Xbox on that shelf

What about stuffing the SNES and Genesis in the same cubby?

I think I'm going to build myself an entertainment center.  I can never find a good one which will hold all my junk the way I want it.

I keep the XBox in the bedroom, and I do have Dreamcast NES discs. Not very complete, though. Thanks for the idea though.

I tried putting them together at one time (so I'd have controller storage space) but they won't fit together. I think I even tried it with a busted Genesis 2, no dice.

But even if I cleared a cubby, I don't see how that'd be much different than putting it in the place I want to (and it'd be a pain in the ass to watch movies). The only benefit is keeping it horizontal, but since when have vertical PS3s had issues? I thought the hardware was immaculate in its reliability.

Jackal's such an awesome and underrated game, especially 2 players.

I just dont trust vertical drives when dealing with CDs, I always imagine them falling out while playing, or when nudged

Which is funny since I have the Wii that way... I guess PS3 would work since it uses a slot-loader rather than a disc tray

So I guess just shove it where you were gonna originally, and play it, if it tweaks out or you have issues, then arrange your shelves

Don't be fooled, it's just that the bill of his hat blocks out the overhead light, that's all.
