Johnny Depp is considering an offer to star in two forthcoming Pee-Wee Herman movies, playing the legendary kids’ character. Paul Reubens, who played Pee-Wee in TV shows and films until 1990, has completed two scripts he hopes to bring to the big screen in 2009.

Reubens hopes to reprise the role himself, but admits he has also spoken to his Blow co-star Depp about taking on the part.

Reubens tells MTV, “(He said) Let me think about it.”

Besides appearing together in Blow, the two actors are also linked through director Tim Burton - one of regular Depp-collaborator Burton’s first films was 1985’s Pee-Wee’s Big Adventure.

You know I could get behind this. I like it, a lot. Just get Tim Burton to direct it.

Paul Reubens comes across as a really cool and nice guy. He did a really great AV Club interview a while ago.

He is a cool guy. I am a bit surprised he'd be willing to let anther actor (an a-lister no less) take over his prized possession though.

If Tim Burton directed it (and isn't that out there, he did direct pee-wee's big adventure) then Depp would do it without thinking.

Paul Reubens has been awesome on Pushing Daisies... but then again everyone on that show has done a great job. Even Molly Shannon improved from "unwatchable" to "not actively making me want to change the channel".

I like Paul Reubens. He should play his own character. Johnny Depp playing the Pee Wee Herman part would be like a real-life version of the film parody scene in Big Adventure where James Brolin played Pee Wee.

I would've liked Charlie and the Chocolate factory better if Burton hadn't used it as filmed therapy to work out some more of his daddy issues

You see, I think it would be great if Reubens got these projects going. The name of Pee Wee was destroyed for really no reason, and I think it would be kind of neat if he "redeemed" Pee Wee with a one-two comeback, especially as he has planned (one movie for all ages, one movie targeted at the adult audience, like his early Pee Wee material).

I read some stuff about the adult script. It has a funny little premise. It starts with Pee-wee in prision and him getting out and having to reclaim his name after it was tarnished.

Speaking AV Club. I was just playing around there and found this interview. It was shockingly good. Oz was very unrestrained and didn't hide a thing when describing Brando and the failure of that nicole kidman movie. A good read:

Oh okay. I see our point of view. I might even agree with it. He might be too old for Pee Wee (Johnny Depp is ten years ounger than him), but I also believe there is something to the viewpoint that nobody could do Pee Wee but Reubens. If Reubens is guiding the project, though, I will have a bit of faith. It's his character and he clear that he cares about what is best for it.

ITs more like a flattering tribute/rebirth in my opinion.

I bet paul is a huge fan of johnny and i bet johnny is a huge fan of pauls - everyone wins and gets something in the end.

I think another Paul Pee-wee is a bit analogous o having another Jack Joker.

Johnny playing Pauls part will show Paul dimensions of his role he never even noticed.

We can all only hope that our lives turn out so great that one day a tier of actor such as JD is casted to play us in a movie.

The difference between Paul and Pee Wee and Jack and the Joker is that Pee Wee is Paul Reubens's own creation, though, so there is a personal element here. It would be a torch passing, not just another actor plaing a stock character.

I think I can see Ruebens rational asking Depp (who he is friends with). He has been trying to get his Pee-Wee movie off the ground the last few years but no studio will take it. If he got an A-lister to take over the role he'd have a MUCH easier time getting it made. I think its based purely on the fact he thinks Depp will result in his movies finally getting off the ground.
