DualShock 3
« on: December 15, 2007, 01:03:52 AM »
So I got a DualShock 3 today

I instantly loved it - the weight it better, the plastic is thicker and the grips feel a bit fatter

The PS button feels a bit tighter and heavier - harder to accidentally push than my SIXAXIS(s).

So this rumble business is pretty important to me. I really hated that the PS3 is just now getting it again and instantly felt something missing from my PS2/PS1 games on the PS3. How can Psycho Mantis show me his abilities and move my controller across the floor?

It seems like you globally toggle the rumble for the controller on PS3 games and do not set it individually in the game GUI. You do this under controller settings in the home menu....I hope they add a low/high/off setting. Right now it is just on or off.

So I let it charge up while I was out earlier and was eager to get into some games and see how it fares...

I pop in Orange Box with hope of feeling each bullet I squeeze out of the pistol.....denied - ORange Box DOES NOT support DualShock 3 rumble.....

So I head over to Unreal Tournament III - it works and its nice.

It feels more tight and less rattled up than other controllers - but it could be because its new. ITs completely silent and I like that. It shouldnt moo like a cellphone when it vibrates.

So it feels great in UT3 - but i need to figure out what other games use it and try it out - i think ill do uncharted next.

For a PS2 game i think ill test ZOE2.

Worth it? IMO YES! I wish they would have just called it SHOCKAXIS however.....the controller now says sixaxis and dual shock 3 on it..... :/ i dont like that - call it Dual Shock 3 - period.

I should also test the tilt and see if it is any different.

They cant bring this out in the US fast enough. Spring 2008? :( fuck

It's the same fucking controller as the original six axis, just with rumble.  So it feels more weighted.  That's it.

Stop calling them triggers.  They're not triggers.  They don't even approach trigger-like status.  They're "mush buttons."

Gald to hear the new controller is more solid.  I feel like I'm going to break the sixaxis in half every time I use it.

Hopefully since its now labeled as Dualshock instead of Sixaxis we will stop seeing pointless integration of motion control into PS3 games.

whats wrong with the "triggers"?

The only thing I do not like compared to the DS 2 is how easy it is to push them if you set the controller down as it rests on them.

If you hold a SIXAXIS up to the light - you can see thru the thin smoked plastic....hell if i squeeze on parts of the sixaxis controller it feels soft.

The DS3 is made of the harder non translucent plastic like the DS2.

And the handles are slightly fatter with the rumble parts in them again.

The SIXAXIS handle/wings were flatter/thinner like knife blades ;)

I think the cheapest you can import it for is around $65 with slow as hell non trackable shipping.

I also noticed that the Japanese are more trusting people - the shell pack for the import DS3 had a easy to open cardboard back that i easily popped out of place without any tools/scissors...the north american sixaxis controller packages are that complete shell package you gotta hack saw the sides of the package off and then gash your hand open on a sharp part trying to get the controller out.

If we had that JP packaging in North America controllers would be stolen left and right.

In UT3 you use the top shoulder buttons to shoot/alt fire.

LEft trigger is weapon select matrix and right trigger cycles weapons.

I haven't had a a problem with the triggers - then again the last console controller i just really didn't like was the colecovision pad - followed by the jaguar pad......oh and the 3DO pad was pretty sucktackular with the daisey chaining....

All other current gen and last gen controllers have been doable for me.

You spent close to $100 on that? Or you got shitty shipping?

And yes, the triggers do suck some balls. Proof? UT3 doesn't even use them to shoot. If they were good TRIGGERS you'd use them to shoot guns.

it works great with PS2 games on the PS3 - the games rumble just as hard as they did on the DS2 and the battery seems to hang just as long as the SIXAXIS battery so far. I remember having rumble on would kill the batteries in my Logitech wireless controller for PS2.

I played some Area 51, Killzone and ZOE2.

Yea, but you won't see it defaulting to the bumpers on 360.

I'm definitely getting one but I'm a little annoyed that they didn't fucking release it here in NA this fall.  What a bunch of bullshit.

And the PS3 triggers are pretty much useless outside of driving games.  That's the only genre where they've felt halfway decent.  Anything that requires you to shoot with 'em or press them repeatedly is destined for failure.  I really would've liked to have seen Sony at least address this shit with the DS3.

I was like the third guy to comment on the Sixaxis in this thread -- it wasn't an attack on you. I don't know why I'm the only one you decided to have a titty attack about. I came in here to ask what you paid for it, because when I went to buy one it was over $90.

:btw I only lash out at your stupid posts, just like anyone else. I'm not angry at all, I don't know what your deal is.

As a GT fan, I thought the triggers were designed for GT in the same way Nintendo designs all their controllers for their mario games. My biggest problem with the triggers is just that my fingers slip off them because they are concave...which doesn't make any sense but okay.

Dualshock 3 in Japan first makes no sense. Japas don't even buy any games. So now we have people in the US with no rumble in Ratchet and Uncharted so the Japas can piss on those games and not buy GT5.

Fuck you sony.

seriously...who the fuck at Sony thinks it's a good idea to hold out on releasing shit in the US.  No GT5 prologue, no dualshock 3.  Does Sony even care about the NA market anymore?  I live pretty close to SCEA Headquarters (Foster City, CA), like maybe 5 min away....I wish I could walk in and ask what the fuck they are doing.  throw us a fucking bone here.

its making these first gen PS3 experiences like resistance feel like new games.

Orange Box doesnt support it for some reason, and Warhawk doesnt have the patch including the support yet :(

- Resistance: at first when firing the carbine you will think the rumble is too soft, but then when you fire larger weapons you realize that they are just trying to distinguish between lighter and heavier weapons in the game. It does have some bugs. Like when driving the tank, if you switch to the big machine gun on top, sometimes while squeezing the trigger the heavy machine gun rumble will just stop for some reason...releasing and re-pulling the trigger gets it going again.....

- UT3: Feels perfect if a little on the light side.

- Blacksite: Area 51 is the best implementation yet. Even the normal assault rifle feels more immersive due to the heavy rumble.

double suck points to SONY for not having this from the beginning of the gen, and definitely for not releasing this in NA before end of 2007. It makes Resistance so much more fun and immersive.
