How does Gamestop trade in work?
« on: December 15, 2007, 11:46:10 AM »
Willco, maybe you can answer this. I almost never trade in games because I'm bound to get a better price on Ebay than what Gamestop will offer me. But before my fiancee and I take off for NJ, I need to offload a few games I don't feel like dragging across the country. Nothing fancy: Rainbow Six: Vegas, Fight Night 3, Oblivion. They're all in okay-ish shape, but manuals and cases are there.

What can I expect to get? Do I need any kind of documentation? I'm just trying to scoop a few bucks to make a new DS a little more affordable.

It depends on the games.  Honestly, you'll probably get around $30 or so for all three games, but not much, since the market value of them isn't that high.  Fight Night Round 3 is a Platinum Hit, Oblivion has been relegated to the same status with the GOTY edition and Rainbow Six: Vegas dropped in price significantly a couple of months ago.

The price that goes into the credit factors in several things: how much GameStop can make off of it, how much stock GameStop has of the game, demand for the game and whether or not GameStop wants to force the market value down on a product or game.  You'll notice you'd only get $30 for a used PS2, despite it selling for $90, simply because GameStop has so much inventory of used PS2s and demand is not high.  It's trying to drive the market value down.

Another good example - Lost Planet and Lair were $60 games (I think Lair still is), but their trade-in value was a fraction of that simply due to the overwhelming amount of trade ins.

You don't need any documentation, just make sure they're in good working condition, bring 'em to your local GameStop and get your credit.  You'd get 10% more if you have the Edge card (which they will try to sell you on) and an additional 10% if you put it towards any pre-orders.

I will say, right now, if you get a new DS Lite, you get 20% off up to 3 used GBA/DS titles, as well.

30 is even more than I expected. Honestly, I just don't have room for them in my luggage and this seemed like and advantageous way to get rid of them. The 20% is nice, but I think I'm gonna stick with Gamefly. For 2 months while I'm abroad it'd be cheaper just to continue my sub than nab Rune Factory and Etrian Odyssey used, I think.

What do you mean? Just your store doesn't? It shows GameStop right here on the list of companies participating.

Games decrease in value quick, it'd be better if you were to call and ask the values.

I asked for values on things like Madden and Godfather for a friend, and that shit is like 2 dollars.

You won't get $30 for Vegas. I asked at a local Gamestop before it even dropped in price. You'll get more like $12 for it.

30% extra is pretty good though.  I'm thinking about trading in some crap for a PSP slim although I'm usually reluctant to part with any of my games, even if they were crap.

Anyone noticed how Jewco never informs us about any deals?  No wonder he's rising up the coroporate ladder.
