come on, an extra ... 10 seconds?

this is "female who looks like Gackt , i wonder if he'll sleep with me?" Nomura fantasy horror.

I'm starting to think this game exists on a vague story board level, but isn't anywhere near becoming a reality.

and the insult is this : anyone with ANY knowledge knows the first trailer was a lie
anyone following the "white engine" knows that it's in trouble: mysterious at best, not actually working at all in any shape or form at worst

and here we are ... at the end of 2007 - months beyond the "oh, playable demo at TGS" territory
and we get the same lie from the square show , with an extra 10 seconds or so for all the people to swallow.

are people so desperate that 2 and a bit years on they are going to swallow the SAME footage all over again?
this is shocking.
Square/Sony are showing contempt for people here
i'm sure the sony fans are going crazy about this,
but at this rate, i think we can start talking about spring 2010 for this game
because frankly, i doubt they have ANYTHING beyond some CG done on this.

FAIL.

dc in 2009 :lol

dcharlie, considering what they did with Crisis Core, why does what they are doing with FFXIII alarm you or surprise you?

I think EGM has already said the game is playable. They probably have a small team working on it while the core staff does something else while they wait for PS3 numbers to get to the point where they think it's respectable. If that's 2009, it's 2009. They just released Crisis Core three years after the PSP launched and it was announced like before launch.

FF:CC on Wii was announced at the same time and has had less actual media shown, and everything we see of it is completely different. Do you think that game is in worse trouble, considering there is no administrative reason to hold it back?

Why do Sony fans have faith in this game when Square apparently doesn't give a fuck about next gen?  I am wagering that this will be an FMV-fest with minimal gameplay, moreso than previous entries.  Square putting to use the pricey prerendering tech they wasted so much money on, while their game designers crank out cell phone games.

Square's dead!  Sony fans, I wouldn't be looking for hope here.  Sales hope, I guess, but not good exclusive game hope.

it's very simple : What have Square shown with this new trailer? Answer: Absolutely nothing. Zero. Zilch. The promise demo isn't here, the game is STILL concept renders!!! people should be shouting WTF

SE said like half a year ago they wouldn't have a playable demo until next year.  Development isn't keeping up with the original schedule, but normal SE marketing practice is to not release much until 5-8 months before release anyway.  I expect FF13 in late 2008.

I'm sure we'll see more FF7-related stuff in the future, but for now (after Crisis Core) those teams are concentrating on 13 and Versus 13.

this is "female who looks like Gackt , i wonder if he'll sleep with me?" Nomura fantasy horror.

EGM: What can you tell us about the heroine of FFXIII?

Motomu Toriyama: We can't tell you all the details, unfortunately. Looking at the history of the FF series, there were already female main characters, like in FFVI, FFX, and FFX-2. This time, one of the characteristics of this heroine is that she's not that feminine. I tried to make her someone very strong, independent. When I asked Mr. Nomura to design this character, I requested someone like a female version of Cloud from FFVII.

Fantasies. Final Fantasies. This is what Wacky Jappy Racist Total Software publisher Square-Enix says they are offering our children. But is this really the only service they provide to America's youth?

Our 60 Minutes Crew infiltrated Square-Enix's Tokyo headquarters and were utterly amazed at what we saw: rampant drug use that made the company's writers feel talented, a man named Kawazu having sex with a life size Pikachu doll, and a twenty something man responding only to "himumumu" banging on Tetsuya Nomura's office doors and smearing his feces on his window.

Just what is going on in this office?

There is an article in Famitsu this week about the final fantasty series with userbase polls etc...

It made me thing - i don't think the majority of people are really FF fans, rather they are FF7 fans.

FF7 or some facet of it wins in every single poll.

In this sense, as loathed as i am to say it, right now SE should just give the fans what they want and bail sony out of their hole and just do a big scale production FF7. To increase their cash, they should split it into 3 parts as per the disks of the original so they can sell each "episode" for 5980 and recoup the cost/balance the risk that way. They should do this because, well, they can! Plus it means people aren't sitting around with nothing to play for 3 years. Guaranteed income coming back in, probably pick up 40/40 three times in famitsu, PS3 sales will go up, remerchandise everything FF7 for a good 3-4 year period, Sony would be happy, etc etc...

Because the Japanese will pony up for this game again and again - and SE should abuse it.

oh, and to send people into a frenzy - they should end the final disk with a black screen
and the simple white text in the bottom right corner saying

"to be continued...."

Enix made a fuckton of cash (and continues to do so) off of their reselling of Dragon Quest.  Every game in the series up till VI (I think) has had at least one upgraded console and/or handheld rerelease that invariably made major bank.  A FFVII remake is about as likely as the sun rising tomorrow.

Oh, we all know it is coming, but where the fuck is it?  It is, no exaggeration, the one thing that fans have wanted since this whole compilation of Final Fantas VII thing was started.  Square has never had an problems with delivering fanservice in the past, on matters more terrible (see FFX-2, or even like, Advent Children), so why do they stop before giving us the one thing that fans want most of all?

THe same reason FF4-2 is on cell phones.  The same reason FFX-2 is a terrible, unlovable game.  The same reason FF11 is a numbered FF and not a side story.  The same reason FFT has mutated into synbiosization.  The reason?  Square hates its fans, or even worse, they largely have little idea of what "good" actually is.  Sometimes they hit the "good" target, like with Kingdom Hearts, but overall, well, I've got a bridge to sell you if you think they are worth having faith in.

Sony has nothing to do with this bomba, dcharlie.  This is all on Square, and the writing has been on the wall since the beginning of the PS2 era.

I don't think so.  The Enix" side of things still doesn't seem all bad.  Enix didn't have that much of a presence in the US until recently, so I cannot say if there has been a true hit in quality there.

I guess you are right, dcharlie, but I honestly don't think Sony is as stupidous and negligent to its fanbase as Square is.  Despite their now-constant failings, Sony, due to their dailure, is at least trying to please fans; it's just a case of too little, too late.  If Sony could make an FF7 remake on PS3 happen, I am sure they not only would have secured it, it would have been announced publicly before the ink on the papers had even signed.  Sony has done some distinguished mentally-challenged things, and they continue to do distinguished mentally-challenged things, but the FF7 remake fiasco, in m eyes, is all on Square.

That's basically what it takes to make any big budget game these days, from scratch, with no middleware.  Not shocking numbers.

300 people? And 5 years at that? I know games take a lot of people, but building something from scratch, even if it's a big budget game shouldn't take that amount of resources for that long. The only thing that fits such a bill was Shenmue.

It was also delayed a year after we heard it was in trouble, and in the end there still isn't any game design lulz.

Square's budgets for last gen FFs were in the 30 mil range. FFXII took 35 mil to develop, was in development hell, saw its original director leave, and so on and so forth. And they still did it in four years.

VII cost 45 million  :lol

This is according to Wikipedia, but it's sourced. Consider that Square was on the cutting edge of graphics technology, and FMV must have cost shittons more then than it does now.

As a side note, Sony put up a 100 million dollar advertising campaign. For a game. A japanese RPG. In 1997.

So the cost is kind of skewed. It was no object though, FF8 opened with $50 million in sales in like the first six weeks.

I bet the budget numbers for FF7 are Superman Returns-esque in that they count the experimental shit they were toying with, like the SGI N64 demo and shit.  That hardware wasn't cheap, and they had to have at least invested a bit of money into that.  I'd bet the budget numbers for FF8 and 9 would be more "Accurate" and less inflated by experiments.

uh, this has been Square's MO ever since they decided to make FF2 have no direct story connection to FF1, back in 1987.  Whenever they've done a sequel or otherwise capitulated to fan demands, they've always added some kind of "twist" based on whatever interests the dev. team at the time.  Neither FFX-2 or AC are the kind of straight sequels people expected, they're both "twisted" fanservice.  In this case, most people didn't like it, but, for example, Seiken Densetsu 2/Secret of Mana is a Square sequel that was very different from the original (FF Adventure) and people loved it.  So sometimes it's worked, sometimes not, but it's not a new thing.
