I got a replacement DS finally - did I miss anything?
« on: December 16, 2007, 01:47:25 PM »
Mine broke ages ago, and I ended up selling most of my games a long time ago.  All I had left was Super Mario Bros. New and Tetris DS.  Last night, due to some wheelin' and dealin' (30% off used game when buying a DS) and mounting store credit, I bought the Zelda DS Lite bundle and New York Times Crosswords and Chessmaster.  I was wondering if some of you fine folks, especially the reluctant owners, could give me any tips on what I've missed since last March on the handheld.  There are a handful of intriguing titles, like Front Mission, Final Fantasy XII, Etrian Odyssey, Brain Age 2, Contra 4 and the like that spark my interest, but I've really got no hands-on experience with any of them.

I really like Rune Factory. It starts off as another Harvest Moon iteration but quickly reveals itself to be a Rouge-like with Harvest Moon stuff tacked on. This is a good and a bad thing. The Rogue-like elements are good and they make great use of the traditional HM mechanics. In order to regain "Rune Points" (MP/Mana/Blah blah), you need to cultivate crops INSIDE the cave. In essence, you have to create your own checkpoints. It gives you a strong sense of progress as you plunge into the cave every day, struggle to reach a plantable field and cultivate it. When the field finally yeilds the RP, you can refill there and continue further in.

That said, for every new thing in the game, something else suffered. Live stock is gone, replaced by trainable monsters. The Zelda-lite combat feels clumsy and the weapons are unbalanced. Once you start making some headway into the caverns, agriculture quickly becomes financially unstable. It takes RP to tend to the fields and RP to battle, so what's the point in tending fields? This goes double once you get some monster pals to start tending the field for you.

Still, for fans of Rogue-likes/Life sims, it's a winner. It's just less and less of a Harvest Moon game the farther you play along.

Elite Beat Agents is a must (pick up Ouendan 2 if you can too), and I don't even like rhythm games. Pick up Bleach DS if you like 2D fighters.

 :(

It was a solid platformer, I am disappointed at your opinion.

I actually think Yoshi's Island 2 is better. And Willco said he has NSMB, anyway.

Thanks for the impressions, Robby. I will have to check that out.  I had made up my mind to buy Picross earlier - I actually am picking it up as soon as I finish seeing this movie.

I'm not saying NSMB is bad - it's definitely worth a play-through - but it's not something I see myself ever going back to.

On the other hand, I really haven't touched my DS in a long time for anything.

WTFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFFF

NSMB is ASSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

honestly If you know anything about platformers NSMB is certainly not 'solid', you are honestly better off with the SMB1 GBA cart

Better platformers on DS:

Castlevanias, Yoshi's Island 2 (although this isnt much better), Contra IV if that counts, Canvas Curse if you consider that a platformer

Yeah Castlevania is definitely better than NSMB but it's not a platformer. I'm sort of disenchanted with the franchise right now though.

yeah a lot of people are saying that and its a fair comment, me on the other hand, I CANT GETS ME ENOUGH METROID-IGA-VANIA, I mean it does suck that Kojima stopped doing the artwork and we now get bottom of the barrel anime... but PoR was a fucking solid adventure with amazing sound design and a good difficulty curve

I picked up Picross and Front Mission for $16beach after the movie. My God, is Picross something awesome. I dig Front Mission thus far, and the new price cut helps.  I played both Castlevania games thoroughly and I might re-buy 'em, but I'm really looking for imprssions on Contra, FFXII and more.

Picross rocks.  Really hard.  What's the scoop on Planet Puzzle League?  Front Mission is rad too.

Wait, it's hard? I could've sworn I remember talking to FatalT and showing him the website I played Picross on and he said the DS version was a joke in comparison. Hmmm. Or maybe that was the Wiicross website he was talking about...how big are the grids?

Oh and PPL is pretty awesome. It's Panel de Pon! But the way vs. is set up is pretty damn distinguished mentally-challenged and much different than Tetris Attack, which kinda soured it for me. Matches go on for fucking EVER.
