How powerful do you think Nintendo's next console be?
« on: October 21, 2006, 05:49:24 PM »
Okay, so I was doing a little thinking, and seeing as how Nintendo didn't wanna spend enough on an HD capable machine, they figured Wii level power would be enough for 480p/Widescreen games.

But by 5 years time, HD penetration should be at a point where Nintendo simply cannot ignore HD anymore. Yes, Nintendo went on the record saying that next time it will be HD compatible, but you never know with Nintendo.

Now, looking at Nintendo recently, I think it'll be safe to assume that Wii2 most likely will be weaker than Xbox 720 and PS4, but where will it actually stand? HD games require a lot of processing power, right? Would it be fair to say that Wii2 could reach 360 level?

At first it may seem like a no brainer, but then again, Nintendo didn't bother to include DD 5.1 either, so....

Thoughts?

The power of an N64 with the filtering of a PSX.

I've got to be honest here.  Spending time trying to predict the computing power of Nintendo's NEXT console is similar to trying to predict the weather 5 years from now.  In other words it's pretty much a waste of time.

Dumb thread.

That said...

This is the first Nintendo system that isn't close or better to the others power wise.

Nes>master system
Snes>Genny/TG16
N64=psx/Saturn all had certain strengths over the other, but all sucked as 3d machines in general
GC>ps2 and comparable to xbox when coded properly.

So to say "wii2" or whatever it'll be call will be less powerful is kinda shortsighted.

Technology will be better and cheaper, and hd will be in more homes.

But, dumb thread :)

The Wii is Nintendo's last console, so this thread is useless.

:(

But I meant weaker than 360/PS3. Not weaker than what it is right now (if that's what you were thinking).

Only reason I'm asking is because the jump from GC to Wii is like 1.5-2. What would compel Nintendo to go for a 5-10 times increase if the Wii turns out to be successful?

They won't have the unique control scheme?

If Wii is a success, then expect the next console to be the Wii repackaged with some other gimmick, maybe some kind of etch-a-sketch controller.

It's just a Cube.

Not very powerful compared to the new consoles. Some games do even look worse than 1st generation Ps2 games. It's just horrible.

Nintendo made a huge mistake by underlivering in graphics.

I hope the Wii is powerful enough to run all the games in 480p 16:9 widescreen.  If it can do that without any of the lame Hold A at start up to enable pro-scan I'll be happy.

Sure the games won't look as good as X360 and PS3 games but they will look good enough.

STFU

Unlike you I can see Nintendo's big mistake. And the Wii is a huge mistake.

We live in an era where graphics are important to console gamers. And people don't care about Nintendo games on consoles anymore.

Wii is very shitty in the graphics department and the only good games seem to be Nintendo games.

A formula that is doomed to fail...hard.

How can you say the Wii is a mistake when you have not played it yet?

I think the Wii is going to open gaming up to a new audience, people who normally wouldn't play games are going to find it very interesting.

OA down so the trolls go wandering.

Gameplay>graphics ALWAYS.

All of sudden last gen looked like ass, ps2 is a powerhouse and 1st gen games are the basis of what a console can do.

What a world.

It's a mistake because they're relying too much on the controls. They totally forgot about graphics and the games. The best games seem to be Nintendo games again, and other games look like shitty flash minigames. It can be fun for 20 minutes, but it will wear off. I'm reading a lot about that....

X360 and Ps3 offer everything in all departments. And when the Wii formula works, they'll copy it. Nintendo can't copy Sony and MS...

Latest Ps2 games look amazing. And the difference between multiplatform Ps2/Xbox/Cube games wasn't that big in the last generation.

While X360 and Ps3 multiplatform games look next-gen, the Wii version of those multiplatform games still look last gen. If there's even a Wii version anyway. 3rd parties are ignoring Nintendo's console again.

isn't there a market for short fun games?

I play Guitar Hero everyday because it is short and fun, once I finished the last Zelda I never touched it again.

Just because the Wii isn't like the X360 or PS3 doesn't mean it is a mistake.  It is something different for a more unique gaming experience.  Isn't that good for gamers?

This gen instead of 3 systems that are about equal in power with the same multi console ports, we get two high end power houses and a 3rd less powerful system with an unique interface that will change the way it plays games.

Don't be so narrow-minded, you don't have to only own one system.  Get a X360 or PS3 for your traditional games and a Wii for those wacky titles that will benefit from the controller.

I will own all consoles. Just like in all the previous generations...

But the Wii seems like a big mistake to me. The niche markt isn't that big. It's the "Eye-toy effect" all over again.

Fun for a few days or during a party when you're drunk, but it'll get boring very fast. I am not buying a Wii for the party games. But only for Zelda, Metroid and Mario Galaxy. For the REAL games.

Morphix, don't bother... it's like talking to a brick wall.

Gone are they days when people judged things once they were out, now people judge based on first development screens, and without actually trying things out for themselves.

The argument is old and tired and needs to be put to rest.

Once things get rolling and wii has some more games out it can be debated again, but for now, it's a moot point.

People bag on red steel, but it's got better lighting and effects than we ever saw last gen, and it's a 1st gen title.

Wii has more than enough power to toss things around at 480p 16:9 at 60fps, that's all that really need to be said.

Zelda looks ok, but most WII games i have seen did not look good, and for me using the remote does not look fun. also it seems a bit pricey for me, so i won't be buying one.

if they included HD, then it would have been a different story.

It is not like the Wii is holding things back like the Gameboy did.  You have 2 other consoles out there who do the whole Next gen thing (HD visuals ect) the Wii offers something different.

for me, what it is offering, the part that you say is different, is not worth the price, and does not look like fun to me.

I wouldn't pick the Wii over the X360 or the PS3 but $250 with a game doesn't seem so expensive for the system.

it comes with Wii Sports (collection of mini games from what I can tell).

I don't know how much better Zelda will be on the Wii but the bow and arrow stuff from the E3 show looked like it could be fun.
