So I quit WoW...for a third time.
« on: December 19, 2007, 04:08:15 PM »
Please don't let me go back again.  I just got the two epic pvp 1-hander axes.  The game is as fun as it's been since I first played it.  And I can't help but play "just 1 more hour" everyday.

I had to stop.  Tell me how bad my life would be if I chose to play again.  Tell me anything to keep me away from that game.  EB, I need an intervention.

At least now I have time to play Fire Emblem again...even if I don't get epic axes in that game and can't talk to others while being fucked up on booze and ambien.  :'(

I've tried WoW, EQ2, DAoC, and Eve and quit all of them within two months of starting. MMORPGs hold no sway over me.

yeah i have to say outland is not at all as "charming" as azeroth, but it's just so much better designed in terms of quests and such, they've really come quite far. i wonder how wotlk will turn out...

Oh come on, send me a PM to please

MAF: Honestly I've been in HP from lv58 to my current lv61. I was just so preocupied with doing instances (I love Ramparts) and questing that I never really felt like going anywhere else. But I visited Zangarmarsh right before my computer fucked up and man was it nice. The quests are hard though, and demand two man groups which SUCKS because it's so impossible to find anyone for quests.

I hate grinding and prefer to just level with instances and quests. No way I'm gonna spend 5 hours grinding on mobs as a prot warrior.

The outland zones are brilliantly designed, and the itemization for quest rewards is 1000000x better than it was in the old world content. I'd take Zangramarsh/Terrokar/Shadowmoon Valley/Nagrand over any zone in the old lands in terms of visual design.

My wife and I are having a fun time leveling as a warrior/priest duo. I'll never go back to the high-strung, awful "work" of high-end raiding again, but for causal play for two people one or two nights a week, it's pretty much perfect.

Frag: Whats awesome is how PVP armor sets are so strong, and you can effectively PVP instead of raid at level 70. Except you have to put together a decent arena team to be REALLY competitive, but I like the option of PVP over raiding. Plus the world pvp in outlands is a neat idea too.

I mostly solo, I've tried teaming up with people in my travels but everyone moves too slow between quests. I may join a PVP guild eventually or try to get a PVP group together in the guild im currently in, but all of them like to RAID :(

I really don't like WoW PvP-they made some base decisions in their mapping of core abilities to class types that are fundamentally flawed. Heck, I'd go so far to say that I play the game in spite of the shitty PvP.

I like questing and running dungeons in small groups with friends.

It's cool that everyone has their thing that they enjoy in the game, though. That it does manage to serve and satisfy such a wide variety of players is really incredible.

Well right now the worst part of WoW PVP is how balances are made based mostly off of forum feedback and majority rules. Currently the restodruid and the warlocks are the bane of my PVP existence. Granted, a fire spec mage isn't ideal for say, ARENA, but I do very well in the traditional Battlegrounds, but restodruids are the new paladins. I mean as a belf mage I have 4 ways to shut a paladin down when he goes for bubble or heal. Against a resto druid with all its shapeshifting stun crap I am VERY limited in my options, and even my pumped up DPS will not make a difference in a one on one fight.

As for Warlocks, fear is still a busted piece of shit. I dont care how many times someone tells me to l2p, but being fear chained by a single lock is dumb crap. Fel Guards are fuck annoying and have created a new class of Warlock, the ScaredyLock. OMG SUMMON FELGUARD RUN AWAY!

So at this point I fight the felguard and get Dotted from behind till I die, or chase the warlock and get axed from behind. Sure, I could use blink to catch up to the lock, but then i'll just be feared. Sure I could sheep the lock, but he'll probably just trinket out, or deathcoil me during the cast. Plus he gets healed during MY cc, unlike fear which makes me run around and take damage. Fear is guaranteed TIME, while a SCORCH can break sheep. BULLLSHIIIIITTTTT

Other than that WSG still has a stupid exploit on alliance side. People have figured out how to get on the ledge BEHIND the flag where mages cant get line of sight even if they have range and no one on horde side has had the time to figure out how to get back there. So during flag standoffs you have jackoff druids with the flag hiding up there immune while everyone attacks the horde fc WTF WTF x2.

Other than that I do fine against most other classes and yes once in a while I kill me a high level restodruid or warlock, but generally as a Mage i've learned to pal around with a pair of Taurens and choose targets of opportunity, which is what a shadowpriest should be doing too..

Unless youre a holy priest, the class that will always die in almost every BG encounter. Paladins/Druids/Shamans make much better PVP healers.

ooc what do you not like about PVP?

I have certian biases that stem a lot from playing (and then sorta being privvy to behind the scenes talk when I was a TL there) with Dark Age of Camelot, so I have a good set of prejudices about MMO PvP. If I had to condense things down into a few bullets, it would look something like:

A) DPS and strong CC are usually on the same classes. Support/Healing and strong CC is a far better pairing for overall individual player satisfaction, especially for group PvP ( and PvE, for that matter).
B) Catagorized immunity timers, not diminishing returns, are a far superior mechanism to balance and tweak crowd control.
C) PvE-related changes to address viability in that sphere (which is important, given the high-strung nature of endgame PvE) often result in changes to classes in PvP that aren't as well balanced. Changes that go in sometimes seem arbitrary and haphazard, and the established customer feedback mechanism (the official forums) is unspeakably awful and makes FOC's shitheap thread look like measured, intelligent discourse in comparison.

I've had three "serious" WoW characters since I've played-a frost mage, a holy/disc priest, and a protection warrior. The mage was the only one that was entertaining in PvP, the other two were/are simply horrendous. There's a case that the priest and warrior were/are not specced properly for PvP, but when you look at other classes' optimal PvE specs in comparison, they shouldn't be nearly that worthless/unsatisfying.

I suck too much at PvP to dare complain about it. I don't do much damage as a prot warrior, and any similar leveled warlock/mage/etc can rape me with their eyes closed. And the priests never heal me wtf

I am a sought after tank for instances, but a total joke in PvP

I have an arms spec warrior that murders even at 39. Its kinda a bitch stance dancing, but you can become VERY dangerous if you manage your intercepts well.

Stance dancing is tricky due to rage management btw, this makes every stance switch a major consideration

argh, everyone is wasting AV time doing the 'race to boss' crap. Alliance almost always wins that cause of terrain and if we do win we get 150-200 less honor. GAY. Least its double honor AV this weekend.

just get a second gear set for your warrior and respecc every now and then, a bit of a pain in the butt, but still better than leveling a new character.

Be glad. My battlegroup (Stormstrike, BG9) has managed to stretch our AV queues to 1-2 hours on average. The current AV set-up is drastically imbalanced in favor of Horde, this coming from someone who farmed 205k honor in AV within the first 2 weeks of S3. We do the same thing every single game. 10-20 on D in the beginning for Captain Galv or Iceblood, whichever Alli go for first. Send 5+ to SF to cap and hold. The rest go O and tap SH and Balinda asap as usual. Once SF is capped and Alli is done wiping on Galv or failing to cap Iceblood they will all res at Stormpike. Most of Horde can then go O, slowly pushing the Alli up the map while holding both mines until they are run out of reinforcements.

The problem is once an Alli dies within the first 5 or 10 minutes and tries to head back down the map he is greeted by approximately 20-30 Horde at Icewing Bunker. A few may get by but they are usually caught by straggling Horde; any stealthers who ninja towers are easily dealt with by a few people recalling. The problem is the choke point at SH/Icewing. There is literally nothing Alliance can do once this point is reached in the game. It's not a skill problem, as outside of AV I'd say we lose about 75% of all other games. There have even been games where Alliance tries to turtle at SH but as long as both mines are held and they don't get a hold of SF it doesn't matter.

Within 2 1/2 weeks of us exercising this strategy after the release of the new AV with 2.3 I watched our queue times go from <1min to ~15min to ~40min to ~1hr+. I honestly don't even remember the last time I lost an Alterac Valley. The score usually looks something like this.

Reinforcements
Horde: 550
Alliance: 0

Honor
Horde: 600
Alliance: 0-42

I've won quite a few games with 600 reinforcements as well.

The majority of the other battlegroups continue to play AV like it was played pre-2.3: like a race. It's still very possible to obtain 20k+ honor in a day on those servers. I myself am lucky if I can get above 3k with 4-6 hours played. I would way rather have a 50% win rate with instant queues compared to a 100% win rate with 2 hour queues. If the games are being played like you said (40 man offense) then there should be no issues with terrain. Hell, if your whole team is on O then nothing should stop you save for 30+ alli turtling on the bridge or at SP. Tell your idiot teammates to mount up and fight in towers and at flags, not on the roads.

After vomiting up that WoW-inspired essay it seems ironic that the reason I came in to this thread was to say that I too have quit this game again. This is my fourth time though. Just tired of the formula of "spend months played for (insert anything here) only to have made completely irrelevant by the next major patch/expansion/whatever." The next expansion on the horizon made me realize I can't keep running on this hamster wheel forever, and as I take no enjoyment in the solo/grinding aspects of the game I'm pretty sure I'm done for good.

Oh yeah, and the AV Holiday bonus honor is practically nonexistent now. They changed the way the bonuses were calculated with 2.3 and AV's potential for ridiculous amounts of honor was nerfed. There is a thread on the PVP forums on the WoW site that explains everything in detail, but I am too lazy to go look. IIRC the only difference between AV this weekend and AV any other day of the month is a flat 80 honor bonus gain for "Map Completion."
