On December 28 for a 24 hour period all Xbox LIVE members will be eligible to download a rental version of Zack Snyder's 300 in high definition for the bargain price of only 100 Microsoft Points.

The cheap rental is being offered as a way to encourage Xbox 360 users to begin using the newly launched Xbox LIVE Marketplace Video Store, currently home to a growing selection of movies available in standard and high definition.

Prepare to be less than blown away watching it in HD, by the way. THey used so many filters and blown-out contrast tricks during filming that it really doesn't lend itself to the detail you might expect from an HD movie. Still looks good, though.

I wish someone who had the hd-dvd or blu ray would rent this and compare picture quality.

Apparently one of the Pirate movies is on XBL (according to a gaffot.) Surely there is some IQ and AQ sacrifice on these downloads compared to the discs, right?

considering the hd downloads are compressed, i wouldn't be surprised. movie downloads vary from 4-6 gigs.

Actually, as a fan of HD movies, there's plenty to worry about. If these 'HD lite' downloads take over for real HD media, we all lose.

If it's 4-6 gigs I don't see how it could possibly look anywhere close to HD, but apparently it does. Which begs the question, why can't they release dvds that look this nice? Is it all in the compression used?
