Science of Sleep

I finally watched like the last 40-60 minutes of this film on cable today. I had sort of pegged this movie to be a nonsensical aftermath of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind's success. Sort of a music video with some characters and no real plot that jumps around for the sake of showing some idea.

I was wrong!

Like ESOTSM, it is a love story, but a different love story. I missed the start of the film, but by the end I figured out the main character had moved to Paris from Mexico after his father died. His mother lives in Paris. The film revolves around his relationship with his neighbor that lives across from him and the fact that he slips in between dream and reality with ease. As it goes, ever since he was a young boy he had dreams leaping into his reality and the two mixing with much confusion. Throw love into this and the film is really beautiful to look at. Not only that, but the repeated symbols are used well and I found the love story interesting, maybe due to personal experience, but I liked the plot as much as the imagery. And that imagery is done well enough so that once the film got to it's end, the images in the end scene made me realize the story is concluded and this was the end. I would say if a film can do that, then it is not just Gondy masturbating, which is what I sort of feared.

the trailers put me off. I love me an indie film but damn the trailer made it way to artsy-fartsy for even me. And I am the type who gives handjobs to Wes Anderson so thats saying a lot.
