So I finally began Mass Effect and so far it seems like a tedious, glitchy mess.  Can anyone fill me in on the game after the first little bit.  Does it get better or does the action remain dull and clunky throughout the game?

Note:  Please comment in dialogue tree fashion.

Serious reply - everyone says it gets better during the last stretch. Enjoy all those horrible hours before that!

That tells you that Mass Effect is a game Himumu played.  It has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game, relative to things outside of the Himuroscape.

Pfft, Himumu is alright.

I'm probably getting it as a christmas gift, but I probably am gonna love it.  Fuck, I thought Knights of the Old Republic was amazing, and I think I'm like the only person who feels that way here.

Serious reply: where are you in the game? It takes a while to get used to the game.

i'm kind of hooked on it. the combat should get better shortly -- it starts off feeling like a bad shooter, but it gets kind of devastating once you've got some decent equipment and leveled skills, biotics particularly. and there's just an obsessive amount of background detail on its alien races and societies and technologies -- i don't read genre fiction, but i guess this is what sci fi novels must be like. beats star wars, anyhow

It's not a good shooter, and once you stop treating as such it gets a lot better

to be honest, i LOVE the game, but it has some gigantic faults.

vehicles - needs to be seriously overhauled.  You can tell this was the last thing on their mind in the game.

Length - short as balls, sir.  as balls.

i actually liked all the dialogue the best.  i could talk for hours with the NPC's (provided they say new stuff)

you'll unlock new skills as you level up your base skills in the squad menu.  you can highlight future skills to plan what you want to master in.  and once you become a spectre, and complete the rogue mission, you have the choice of becoming a new class.

what are you starting off as?

also, if you're playing it shooter style like halo, it's going to be a mess.  just focus on getting your target locked on and firing away.  you don't have to be accurate to get hits on enemies, that's the rpgish nature of the gameplay.  use all your biotics if you've got 'em too.

When do you start getting good skills and shit?   The shooting sucks, and I honestly I rember being promised skills and stats, not 27 fps third person crap.
it takes a while.  I was like level 15 before my character was actually fun to play in firefights.

Yea the shooting is pretty awful - in the beginning at least. But I'm still hooked. What drohne said.

the more planetary sidequests i play, the less i like this game -- they're all identical and worthless. if i had any sense i'd just drop them and finish the main quest, which is pretty great. but completism tends to get the better of me

Pretty much the 7 hours of gameplay I spent on sidequests were some of the worst gaming of the year. Tedious driving and boring repeated dungeons just drove me mad. Once I got level 50 and had all the achievements I could get I went back and finished the main story leaving one thread of sidequests unfinished (there Cereberus shit).

The final hour or so is pretty damn bad ass. But yeah main story good, sidequests fuck awful.

I played as a Soldier FWIW and used Kaidan and Tali as my allies. I played on Veteran as well. By the end I was ridiculously rich, had decent armor and all my characters had Spectre weapons. Normal enemies were not a problem at that point only things like turrets or fighting Armature's were that much of a problem.
