I'm finishing the first one... I was wary of some people's warnings who found the game to be terribly outdated, so much that it (along with its US-released sequel) now bordered on unplayable.
Even if these games do feel old, and the sprites pale in comparison to the best ones on SNES, they're still very good.
Sure, the combat system is slow, and the amount of random encounters is very high, but Persona does a lot of very good things. The first-person dungeon crawling is actually extremely fun. Combat is also still fun, in spite of those shortcomings.
I love how the game constantly goes from absolutely hilarious, to scary. There are some pretty disturbing things that happen in it for a videogame. It's kind of like a japanese take on Goosebumps.
Characters are original, and they don't look like albinos freaks, unlike in Digital Devil Saga, Nocturne or Devil Summoner PS2, even if they have the same designer. Dialogue is entertaining. Most of the times I kept playing just to read the cocky lines that Brad would keep saying.
Who's the character who got his ethnicity changed?
I also finished Persona 3 and enjoyed it a great deal, but with its cutesy anime themes and time management aspects, it's sadly at the other end of the spectrum.
