Man I forgot how awesome Alien is
« on: December 26, 2007, 11:37:08 PM »
It's been forever since I've seen this.  Such cream dream casting.  Harry Dean Stanton, aka the cult leader from Big Love, Ian Holm aka Bilbo Baggins, John Hurt aka The Elephant Man and Sutler from V for Vendetta, and Sigorney Weaver, that, uh, bitch from Aliens.  And that whore that played Spenders mom on the X-Files.  Something Cartwright or something.  And that dude from Picket Fences wwhose name I don't remember.  Basically, I know who everybody in this movie is, and that is awesome.  Now where be the pale space vampire titties?  That is this movie, right?  Where be them tittays?

it's my absolute favorite of the alien films

it strikes me as a continuation and update of the many of the gothic tropes in theme and plot.

it's really, really an incredible film

At the same time Aliens is awesome, too.  It's really amazing that two so very different but connected movies exist in the same series.  It's easily one of the best sequels of all time, up there with Empire Strikes Back and Terminator 2.

Yup

Alien is still the scariest film I've ever seen. I don't care about masked killers or giant monsters, but the idea of a small insect-like alien crawling on the floor makes me shit my pants.

Aliens is like the blueprint of how to make a good, dumb action flick. It's awesome but so many movies have tried to replicate it to horrible results.

It's probably the most quoted film in my family though.

I don't think it has much to do with fanboyism, but more with OMG ACTION FILM PLUS FUNNY ONE-LINERS = AWESOME.

I like that formula.  :-[

I need to watch Alien 3 now that I have it.

I also forgot that Alien is the byproduct of Jodorowsky's failed Dune movie.  If it weren't for that crazy, crazy bastard, we would have never gotten Alien.  Alien was the first script O'Bannon made after Dune fell apart, and H.R. Giger and a few of the other key Dune people ended up working on Alien.

you should read that book.  it's got extensive stuff from dune, unused alien stuff (back when it was "star creature"), neal adams and his involvement in an attempt to bring Arthur C Clarke's Childhood's End to the screen, unproduced David Lynch films, the original attempts to bring I Am Legend to the screen (Ridley Scott and Arnold Schwarzenegger and no dialog for the first 30 minutes)  and some other interesting yet known tidbits (Harlan Ellison's Star Trek movie), and it also talks a lot about Cameron's Avatar.

It's well worth the $5 it will cost you used, esp since you like a lot of the people involved in the book.  Some of them are like Hitchcock, the films he didn't make are as interesting as the films he DID make.

There was a time in my life that I would've sworn that Aliens was a better film than Alien, of course there was also a time in my life that I would've said that Iron Maiden was a great band so obviously I have been wrong at least twice so far.  Actually only twice.  Hear that?  2.

Of course I may be mistaken about that.

Including Ridley Scott. He said he was going to do Dune until it fell apart on the BR doc.

Tell me about it.  The movie is astonishing to look at.  The set designs are :o and much like Blade Runner, they are sooooo far ahead of their time.

I want to know the full "story" of Alien.  I mean, it is clear that the movie had to have had a budget and serious studio backing, but Ridley Scott's only previous film, The Duelists, was something of a disappointment as a performer; certainly not a hit, maybe a critical feather in the cap.  How did he get the clout to make something that obviously required so much effort, and so many resources?  Did people just like him?  Was this a case of him fostering good relationships with important people?  Was it a right place, right time thing?  I mean, this wasn't just fate; there has to be more to the "story" behind Alien.

Alien 3 isn't bad. If you watch it for the first time today, you will go in with lowered expectations.  In my opinion, it was kind of nutty to ever think it could "live up" to the first two films.  You want a description?  Solid, not spectacular, and it's still the third (heck, maybe even second) best movie in a pretty decent series.

Similar to how Aliens was totally different than Alien, Alien 3 is different from its predecessor.  It's closer in tone to the first movie, relying more on tension and the sense of isolation than on the visceral thrills of Aliens.  That's simplifying what each movie brings to the table, but I think we can agree it is approaching the truth:  the first and third movie are all about creeping about and building tension, and the second movie is all about milking the adrenal gland like a puking cock.

So the third movie is like the first one?  Sort of.  It's clearly not as good as the first movie, but then again, what is?  What's it do right?  Sigourney is still motherfucking on.  Again, set and production design are out of the park.  The movie looks like its own.  Also, don't forget that it's an earlie Fincher movie, and while it is clearly not the gem he would have made later on, it is still quality.

What does it do wrong?  Let's get the messiest shit out of the way.  If you are a stickler for continuity and seeing the story from the previous movie continue, let's just say you're going to be shaking your head a few minutes into the movie.  DO NOT BE MARRIED TO THE CAST OF ALIENS.  I am telling you that now, forget about them.  They're gone as soon as this movie starts, and for a lot of people, the diehards, that prevents them from ever giving the movie a chance.  Do me a favor and don't take that out on the movie.  The movie had a troubled production history, it took forever to make, and well, they couldn't get the gang back together, so they had to conveniently address that issue, and they didn't quite do it with finesse.  And you know what?  That's the only real problem with the movie.  It's a biggie, but I think if you go in knowing that this is more like a relative to Aliens than it is a direct continuation of the story, you'll be in good shape.

This is all ancient history, more than a decade ago--you know, we know, we all know that Alien 3 isn't as good as the two that came before, but I think enough time has passed that we can judge it on its own merits.  It's not a bad movie at all.  It's a good movie.  If you want a bad Alien movie, watch the one after this.

alien three is essentially The Passion of Ripley D'Arc.  Read it as a Christian allegory and it actually works up to and including the end.

I don't know if that's me implanting my own experiences into the film, but that's essentially how i see it.  St. Ripley Vs The Dragon

I have no problem accepting that it was a disappointment when it came out, but we're more than ten years on now, and I think the movie is decent enough that it needs to be judged on its merits rather than on a poor plotting decision that thankfully gets out of the way before the movie really begins.

It is a noteworthy movie if only because it's how Fincher started up, too.  Even if you end up hating it, remember it for that.

Getting so used to crappy modern horror films makes you appreciate how good the old ones were when you watch them again. I loved both the first two films equally. Alien is a fantastic sci-fi horror flick while Aliens is an amazing action film. I enjoyed the third one as well but it should've been something different. Resurrection however  :yuck. I liked the script when I read it before hand and love the director's other works, but the film ended up a complete mess.

In a way it works with the series as a whole. Each film has Ripley starting off completely alone and further into the future. Also in each film the connections betweeen Ripley's character and xenomorphs gets closer. In the first she simply fights the alien. The second film has her mothering Newt in the same way the Queen protects her kin. The third film has her giving birth to the creature, and the fourth she actually is part xenomorph and does the naughty with one.
