24 Season Three: Official Thread (NO SPOILERS)
« on: December 27, 2007, 03:25:18 AM »

Today I finally bought the boxset, and I just  got done watching the first two episodes. I was wary of buying it because I had heard this season was not nearly as good as the first two. After talking with some of my most trusted critics - CajoleJuice and Bloodwake - I decided to bite the bullet and get it.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

The season premier was easily better than the first two of the previous seasons. While no big explosions or plot twists occurred, I was impressed with the pacing and character development. So far I'm surprisingly interested in all the various subplots, especially Palmer's. It's clear his brother is the more technical, black and white politician. After two episodes I can already see that he's asserting his dominance in David's presidency and re-election campaign, and this will probably lead to some confrontation. As a political junkie this arc is going to be very interesting.

And what's this, Kim isn't annoying.  :o

So far so good :bow

Palmer dating a white woman? My brother got upset, but meh; seems like the chick has a past or something. Either way I can't wait for Sherry to show up.

Jack's drug problem is going to bring the lulz. Also, Chase is pretty cool but based on the history of Kim's last boyfriend, I'm guessing he won't make it out ok

Watch the latter half of this season.

That's all I'm saying. And don't highlight the spoiler.

Watched two more episodes  :o

Like I said, so far all the subplots are interesting. Even the weaker ones - Salazar's brother for instance - are still worthwhile.

I know Tony doesn't die in this season but I still was shocked when he got shot. Holy crap, I wonder if it's going to force him to retire early. This Kyle Singer arc is getting better and better.

I'm loving the sparring between David Palmer and his brother. Like Sherry, Wayne is most concerned with pure politics and not morals or doing the "right" thing. He may not be as ruthless as her but I can already tell some major drama is gonna explode over this girlfriend situation. But holy fuck, I can't wait for SHERRY to meet Ann. Could be epic. :bow

Jack breaks Salazar out of prison, thus compromising his role at CTU for good apparently. I dunno how this is going to work, but I hope Jack doesn't become a fugitive as Palmer suggests.

I liked Season 3 a lot. I got Season 6 for Christmas, I heard it wasn't good, but so far I've enjoyed all the seasons of 24, even when they weren't that good.

I'm eight episodes in and holy shit, it just got awesome

Most of those episodes have been rather solid, but not spectacular but episodes #7 and #8 blew me away. So far I've gotta say this season is better than S2, at least the first eight episodes. Each episode seems more cleverly crafted, with little to no filler. The first few episodes of S2 were good overall but were brought down by Kim's storyline, which seemed like nothing more than filler; in fact the every best episodes of that season occur towards the end when she's out of the way. S3 has already introduced many subplots, yet each has its merits, some more than others.

Palmer and Palmer

As a political junkie I'm loving the Palmer plot this season. While I miss Mike Novic, the introduction of Wayne Palmer is definitely welcome. As I said earlier, he's more like Sherry than David - a dedicated politician more interested in winning the game than doing the right thing. I don't think he's nearly as obsessed as Sherry but we'll see. Boy I can't wait for her to show up  :hyper

Salazar

This entire thing sure got better. Although I must say...they sure are the worse terrorists ever; the Russians and Muslims were much smarter lol. Hector is a pretty shitty villain, but his older brother is quite impressive. He knows Jack, and is more than willing to value his thrust for revenge over the prospect of a fuckin billion dollars; that's dedication.

Double Agents oh my
spoiler (click to show/hide)
I was on the edge of my seat when Chase was brought into Salazar's house lol. I can't fucking wait to see how this plays out. And while this entire secret plot seems a bit forced, I am definitely liking it overall. How far is Jack going to go...

Only complaint so far: Ann is kinda annoying, and I have a feeling she's not done yet. Her fingerprints...

I don't think I've heard a good thing about S6 lol. Without spoilers, what was the biggest problem with it? Too many dumb twists, too much CTU? I bet there are hardcore 24 messageboards where people like that season, but seems like everyone else was hella disappointed

I know who dies in S5 for the most part; is that the season when things took a nosedive?

Sherry's back, and not surprisingly the show just got better. Oh man  :o

And also NINA is back. I saw it coming but it's become a nice subplot. Jack headbutting her, then breaking his chair= :lol :lol :bow

This season is filled with awesome characters. Chapelle has gone from a boring government character to The badass at CTU; he's not as cool as George Mason but his strict discipline is sweet. Then you've got Chase who's gone from a somewhat bland side kick to near Bauer levels of badass-ery. But easily the most shocking and fresh character is Hector Salazar; no other 24 villain compares. He's a god damn machine.
spoiler (click to show/hide)
It seems like he slowly shows his true menace a little bit in every episode, with it finally culminating with him murdering his own brother.
[close]

While Palmer's drama subplot took a hit with the Ann situation, it's rebounded with the addition of Sherry and this financial broker guy. I'm going to watch another episode to see what dirt she has on him. I continue to be impressed with David's decisions. He's honest and noble almost to a fault, and has benefited (and suffered) from being surrounded by people who don't share his values.

Only weak subplot: the stupid baby  :-\

Oh, you just wait PD, you aren't even into some of the most shocking shit in S3

And, here's my opinion on Seasons 4 and 5: they are much, much better and easier to appreciate on DVD. I can see why people hate 4 and 5 if they watched it every week, but as a coherent story, both of them are pretty good. My favorite season will always be season one, and season six wasn't that great admittedly, but PD, give Seasons 4 and 5 a shot, I think you might enjoy them.

So far, my theory of Season 6 being better on DVD isn't succeeding really well. Again, the first four episodes are really fucking strong, but the family plot feels like the 24 team is just grasping for straws. In terms of Willco saying the show self-destructed on the air, looking back on it, I really can see that too. It just feels like every time they pissed off the audience, they rewrote the next episode to make them happy, but at the same time, it made the plot suck overall. The ending and the beginning was strong, but Season 6 was by far the worst season of 24.

Jack: You don't have anymore information do you?
Nina: Yes, I...
*BAM* *BAM* *BAM*

Episode #13, quite possibly the best 24 episode I've ever seen. Not only did Nina go out like a champ, but Jack blew her away. WOW. I figured she'd die, but not that awesome. The payoff was simply perfect. Her killing the entire medical staff, almost killing Kim, omg. But I'm wondering if she really had HIV...her blood was all over Tony's face, and he's got that band-aid on his neck...  :o

Every subplot just got awesome, and the shit is clearing hitting the fan. Sherry essentially killing Allen=wow. I knew she was vicious but damn. I don't see how David is going to do the right thing here; this could destroy his  campaign.

And finally, BABY MOMMA DRAMA. The baby was a dumb subplot, but this is so trashy it's funny. At first I was wondering if it was Jack's baby lol. But now...damn it's gonna be coooold blooded if they kill off Chase after introducing his months old baby

He was an asshole, but he was an AWESOME asshole. In the first two seasons he really didn't do much outside of show up for a couple episodes, bark out orders, and leave. His role increased drastically in this season, and finally he began to be developed as a character. In short, Chapelle was badass. He was the most unemotional, technical guy in the series, and he dished out so much coooold blooded ownage lol. I'll miss him more than George Mason :(

Jack: Do you have any family or friends?
Chapelle: No, I don't have any friends. Outside of the people at work...

for me, season 3 was the last good 24 season. season 5 had its moments, but was way too convoluted at times. It was only fun because of the GAF threads.

The show went downhill at season 4.

The difference between seasons 1-3 and seasons 4-6?

4-6 was more fast paced. There was basically no character development. Thats when they started showing it in January with no re-runs.

SHERRY  :lol

Sadly while looking for a 24 avatar last week I saw a pic on Google that said she died, so episode #23 was spoiled for me. I'm guessing she'll die in the final episode, but getting shot twice in the belly seems like instant death. Oh well

The last episodes I saw were solid but not spectacular. I was upset Tony followed Saunders' plans, and now he's facing treason charges. I'd imagine he'll never be friends with Jack again.

Going into the season finale I'm kinda shocked that I'm not on edge. Last season I was pumped, and wanted to see how every unfinished strand finished. This time there aren't any unfinished threads outside of Jacking finding this last guy, and Sherry. PLEASE someone tell me the season finale is good  :-\

Just finished the season finale...wtf?

That was EXTREMELY underwhelming. It didn't suck, but it just didn't strike me as a good end to the series. After investing so much time in the season and seeing so many awesome things I was shocked at how pedestrian the end game was; that's it?
spoiler (click to show/hide)
Granted Chase getting his hand cut off=omg. But still, that's it? Nearly every thread was essentially ended in episode #23, leaving the finale with nothing big. I mean, a fucking middle school? COME ON.

I saw Palmer resigning a mile away. It sucks he's giving the presidency up, but it makes sense given his character. I'm going to try to find a trailer for season 4 asap, and hope he's in it.  :-\

While Bauer's final scene was poignant and understandable given all the things he went through over the course of 24 hours, I still felt a bit cheated. That entire episode seemed poorly paced; so much time was wasted on irrelevent details like Tony's trial, Michelle, and Guile's wife killing Saunders - which was MEH. Oh well
[close]

Can one episode ruin an entire season? If it's the season finale I suppose so right? I wouldn't say that ruined the season, but I was rather disappointed with the last 3 episodes. If I hadn't had certain things spoiled IE

maybe I'd feel differently. In terms of overall quality S3>S1. There were basically no horribly stupid subplots, no amnesia, etc. Oh, and no cougars or Mole Men. But the season finales of S1 and S2 shit all over S3's. Going into those episodes I knew shit was about to hit the fan, whereas this time it seemed like the season shot its load too early. That factor is important enough for me to consider saying S1 is better than S3, but I will meditate on this more. Cajole/Bloodwake/etc, council me  :'(

Bring on S4 :bow

Unless that was season 5.

Oh yeah, just finished season 6, and it was okay, but the ending was kind of lame.
