Edit: Actually, it's not my favorite Orson Welles movie. Of course it's the most important, and I can see why it is the favorite of many, but I like Othello, Touch of Evil, Chimes at Midnight, and The Trial better. Welles was a MACHINE. Mr. Arkadin is a personal favorite, but not because of the movie's quality. It's not a great movie. It's one of his movies that got taken away from him and recut against his wishes, and it is something of a MOVIE PUZZLE. There are seven major cuts of the movie, some of them drastically different than the others, and it is a very very fun what if game to try to figure out what THE MAN himself had in mind for the movie. It is also a sort of almost sidequel of The Third Man.

This so-called "greatest film ever" would've been a lot better had it included something kinetic or energetic as, say, transforming robots or a razzle dazzle no-holds-barred space mission to save the world from an impending comet of death.

Let me answer that question, Powerslave. Having carefully dissected the film in what can only be phrased as Federology, I have determined that "Rosebud" is some kind of homosexual code word for fellatio. Hence another reason why liberals champion this so-called piece of art as filmmaking at its finest, as it is nothing but a wank film for those who enjoy sodomy!

I might also call F for Fake one of my favorites. That is a difficult film to talk about. The editing is woooooooooosh awesome, though, and there's plenty of mind fuckery about.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. Kane is easy to watch. It takes effort to get into something like Chimes at Midnight, and you have to be in the mood to mentally deal with the language. Not that it's difficult or anything, really, but parsing the Shakespearean takes more work than parsing modern english. I treasure my bootleg copy of Chimes at Midnight. Why won't that come out in the US?

there's no dvd release? that's odd

the AFI silver just showed it earlier this year as part of the Shakespeare on Film series they were doing, so i thought someone had release rights for it.

No US DVD release. It is easiest to get it from, I believe Brazil. It has been trapped in copyright hell for years and years and years.

I dunno. If I were honest and established clear criteria by which movies could be judged, Kane would probably rank in my top 20 or so. Even if you look at the "score," how many breakthroughs it was behind, how it made a dull story interesting, the truth behind the movie, the performances, the cinematography--it's still a fucking god damned excellent movie, and one of the best. But in my heart, my very subjective heart, there are subjects I find more interesting than a well told story about a media mogul. Welles is a genius and Kane is a testament to that, but he made many less perfect movies that I like more simply because I feel a stronger personal connection to the material.

So basically, if I pull out my ruler and measure inches and judge angles, Kane still does very well for itself. But as an object of beauty and an exercise in storytelling in a medium that rewards experimentation, I think there are more wonderful stories out there to be seen.

Well, I guess I see where you are coming from. It really was a very boring story that was made amazing mainly by the acting, cinematography, and variety used in the film.

Im not sure its fair to take films out of the era they were created in and critique them against films in the present. Granted, some films, hold up, but its not fair to expect them to.

I think Kane does hold up, but like you say, the march of history kind of still makes it an unfair comparison. It's like, HMMMMM newspaper dude or DAVID CRONENBERG movie with titties and philosophy
