Citizen Kane:
Respect it for what it does, but other than that, much better films.
I dunno. If I were honest and established clear criteria by which movies could be judged, Kane would probably rank in my top 20 or so. Even if you look at the "score," how many breakthroughs it was behind, how it made a dull story interesting, the truth behind the movie, the performances, the cinematography--it's still a fucking god damned excellent movie, and one of the best. But in my heart, my very subjective heart, there are subjects I find more interesting than a well told story about a media mogul. Welles is a genius and Kane is a testament to that, but he made many less perfect movies that I like more simply because I feel a stronger personal connection to the material.
So basically, if I pull out my ruler and measure inches and judge angles, Kane
still does very well for itself. But as an object of beauty and an exercise in storytelling in a medium that rewards experimentation, I think there are more wonderful stories out there to be seen.
