Impossible Mission DS thread of DESTROY HIM MY ROBOTS
« on: December 27, 2007, 07:20:52 PM »
I went to the store today and saw this and was like OHHHHHHHHHH

Yes, it's a remake of Impossible Mission that came out out of nowhere, plus it only costs $9.99 brand stinking new. Impossible Mission is one of the best C64 games EVER, plus Impossible Mission II rocked my nuts into orbit on the Apple IIGS (there's also an excellent NES port of it available too). It also has really shitty box art that makes it look like a budget version of Splinter Cell.

There's three modes to it. The first is a remake of the C64 version that seems pretty accurate, but they had to fuck it up a bit by making you touch the bottom screen menus when you interact with terminals or want to save your game. The second is a reskinned one with really spiffy graphics and music, plus a new voice actor going STAY A WHILE, STAY FOREVAAAAAAAAAAAH but identical gameplay. You can select from three different characters (dude, girl, and robot) who all play the same. The reskinned one is a bit easier because you can see the tracks where the elevator pads go, making navigation a tad friendlier. There's also a third mode that's the same as the reskinned one, BUT you play as the original character sprite. I actually prefer this because your foot placements are crucial in the game, and it's harder to see the spiffy new rendered characters' feetses (you can cross over a one-block hole with a long stride). Also, after you're done inspecting a room it will turn yellow, making your room-to-room sweep much easier.

The game still plays absolutely great, running jumping and catapulting yourself from level to level feels a lot better than 99% of 2D games out there. It's still pretty challenging, though you can save instantly from the elevator rooms. After you've scoured each level, you put together a total of nine (urgh) passwords by dragging and dropping puzzle components. I seem to remember this being not such a pain in the ass in the original version, but then again I don't think I ever beat the original version because I was a stupid fucking kid who never read the manual.

Oh yeah, you can beat this game in 3 hours.  :( But then again, you can do the same with Portal, and that doesn't include awesomely bad FMV of you foiling Elvin Atombender's plans to nuke the planet. For $19.99 MSRP this game gets 6/10, but for $9.99 it gets 8/10 Jolly Gerstmanns.

(I think there is a Wii and PSP version forthcoming but I haven't seen them)
