Eastern Promises, who has seen this moving picture
« on: December 28, 2007, 02:45:23 PM »
They're about to end that deal at Moviestop where you trade in four used DVDs for $20 credit towards a new release, and I have a small stack of crap DVDs that aren't worth anything.  If I do this trade I can get the Eastern Promises HD DVD for about $10.  Worth it for a blind buy?

I could also preorder another movie, but the only things I'm halfway curious about that I haven't already pre-ordered are Dragon Wars and War.

I'm a whore for Cronenberg, but I haven't seen it, nor have I heard anything from anyone I trust.  I hope TVC has seen it by now, because he's the only one who I know not only matches my Cronenberg fetish, but exceeds it.

Eastern Promises apparently has some brutal violence and gore, but I am not big a fan of Viggo.  Dragon Wars has dragons and wars but carries the strong possibility of being complete shit.

I haven't seen Dragon Wars, but yeah, I'm going out on a limb to say it's going to be shit.

Actually, I just nabbed the movie, and do to the fast paced nature of the holidays, I haven't watched it yet.  I have heard enough from acquaintances that have seen it to put to rest my fears that it might be too similar to History, though.

I liked it.  I'd go into more detail than that but I'm on Nyquil and finding it very hard to function.

Dragon War is also garbage. Even if you go in looking for a good bad movie, you'll be disappointed.

Eastern Promises is a very good movie though. And as an added bonus for you guys, it's got the most homo-erotic scene possibly ever in a mainstream Hollywood movie, where-in Viggo Mortensen fights off a group of assassins while bare-assed naked in a Russian bathhouse. Beowulf totally ripped it off.

I'm really looking forward to The Pianist, having never seen it.

This is what I preordered in the past couple of weeks using that 4-for-$20 deal:

Shoot 'Em Up
The Pianist
Zodiac Director's Cut
3:10 to Yuma
The Rock
Con Air
Master and Commander
Sunshine
30 Days of Night
Assassination of Jesse James
Beowulf
Justice League: New Frontier
No Country for Old Men
Bonnie and Clyde
Unbreakable
The Adventures of Baron Munchausen

I've been using that deal since I got my HD players.  I paid $11 out-of-pocket for Blade Runner, which is about the most I'll pay for any of these pre-orders.  I've been trading in stuff that I got out of Wal-Mart Bins, Pre-Viewed, movies I know I'm going to rebuy in HD, and crap I just don't want anymore.  Out of the 70 or so HD movies I currently own, between the trading and the BOGO deals I think I only paid full price for about 4 movies (and Planet Earth).  I'm going to be sad when this format war is over.

master and commander is an excellent choice. it basically takes place on one ship 95% of the time and it never gest boring. ever. and there's no cg whatsoever, which makes it all feel more authentic.

and i didn't know zodiac had a dc. :o i loved the tc.

other movies on your list that i've seen and like

The Pianist
The Rock
Con Air
Master and Commander
Sunshine
Unbreakable

sunshine's a great sci-fi movie and unbreakable is definitely shymamalanmyan best movie (bruce & jackson :bow).

lol the TC of Zodiac is already two and a half hours. I have the DVD and probably won't double dip for the DC unless I hear great things. It's a very good, methodical movie. Doesn't do anything mindblowing per se, but it's solid all around

I think I saw Dragon Wars and Eastern Promises on the same day.

Eastern Promises is not really very much like A History of Violence.  It seemed more like a straight ahead genre film then its predecessor, however, its a REALLY GOOD straight ahead genre film.  I should probably see it again before I get all definitive about it, but I don't need to see it again to know that its pretty good.

Dragon Wars was mostly shite.  But its got 15 minutes of awesomeness buried underneath 70 minutes of really boring crap.  It would probably play better at home, where the crummy special effects and the bad-90's-syndicated-TV-series level of stupidity would be less of an issue.  Your average Uwe Boll film has as many WTF moments, but more verve.  Take that as you will.  On the plus side, there probably won't ever be a better mega-budget Korean made fantasy/military/romance/ineffectual hero/Robert Forester film ever made.

For real? I guess I won't get it then, even if Shake praises it. The Sin City EE didn't add much new stuff outside of a couple minutes here and there, which was disappointing. But the extras are worth the purchase (especially the cooking school thing  :drool)

According to IGN (...) the DC of Troy is very good; I'll check it out. After being blown away by the KoH DC my opinion on DCs was altered for the better

why the hell would you buy con air, the rock and unbreakable?  really horrible movies to rewatch (especially unbreakable because of the craptastic twist).

the pianist is all right but I didn't think it was that great.  I mean certainly not a classic or anything.

If anyone found this scene erotic, i'm terrified  :lol

I really enjoyed the film. Mortensen is very convincing. The plot all unfolds very predictably but it's paced well and the whole thing has an air of authenticity to it that won me over.

Just because a DC isn't 40 minutes longer does not mean it isn't drastically different.

I mean, I can't speak for Zodiac's DC--I really know little about it--but for all we know it could be drastically re-edited.  And heck, even if the changes are small, that could mean a lot.  Keep in mind that over all the different versions of Blade Runner, there's like 5 minutes total of different footage, yet the movies are thematically totally different.  Six minutes could be the world.

Fincher has pput a lot of effort and hype into the DC, so I have to say I am expecting something.
