What is your GREATEST 8/16 bit era achievement?
« on: December 30, 2007, 03:12:22 AM »
Mine is simple - its all about beating all ThunderForce II stages without losing a ship

So many shooters and action games from that era could be mastered to the point of one life playthru's - but none feels as impossible as ThunderForce II for me.... Even ThunderForce III felt way to pussied down to get excited over...

ouch - thats a stinger

The thought of trying that feels like the thought of trying Gradius II coinop on a single rest or credit.

I recently got owned up and down the street on Rtype TG16 - im not the man i used to be when playing shooters.

omg :O revenge of shinobi is tough! The last boss  :-X

I was never that hardcore, the best achievement I can think of is finishing the master system sonic games with all the emeralds without any faq help (kinda tough becuase the emeralds were hidden in the zones, as opposed to obtaining them via bonus rounds)

I went to regionals when Blockbuster use to run those annual videogame competitions.  I went to regionals for Donkey Kong Country.  I was God at speed runs.  I ended up getting free videogame rentals for a year, a framed award, my name plastered all over BlockBuster, a goodie bag full of neat shit and more.  It was awesome.

Free videogame rentals during the 16-bit era was amazing - it made me the most popular kid on our block.  Most kids couldn't afford the high price of videogame rentals (or videogames, period) at the time... maybe they'd rent one once in a blue moon.  But I got to rent whatever I wanted!  Oh my God, some of the crap I rented!  I even rented Maximum Carnage!

It's also funny that in retrospect, the high price for new game releases doesn't make the new price tags seem as bad.  I recall paying like $50+ for some SNES games, which is easily equivalent to like $70+ nowadays.

I used to play Sonic 2 & Knuckles and get all seven Chaos Emeralds in the first zone. It was probably doable in vanilla Sonic 2, but it was easier with Knuckles because you didn't lose all your rings after you entered a bonus stage.

Probably getting all 100% on every level of Yoshi's Island, including the hidden levels.

I also beat The Lost Levels on the SNES cart, beat World 9 (which only appeared if you played World 1-8 without continuing, had to keep my SNES on for nearly a week,) and beat Worlds A, B, C, and D.

Some of those old RPGs were pretty tough, FF1, DW3, Phantasy Star 1 and 2... but I beat them. Also, 1CCed Contra without using the code.

Oh yea, I forgot that I could beat the arcade Ghost n Goblins on one quarter. The NES one was pretty easy in comparison.

The convienence store near me had a machine you could slide the front bezel upwards and reach down and trigger more credits. So, I had an entire summer or so of practicing for free.

yeah a friend of mine could get all the emeralds in the 1st zone, just with his Sonic 2 cart  ;) He's really good at Sonic 2!

We got to pay a lovely fat 50 quid for SNES games in the UK - imports were 80 quid.
The Megadrive was a fair bit cheaper and , subsequently, assraped the SNES in the UK.

:(

New Zealand was similarly raped, new release master system games were $130, some Megadrive games were around $200

no idea about Nintendo prices, we were Segaland, now were just Sonyland  :'( The last bastion of hope for sfags, the only country where ps3 outsells 360 and wii

I still can't think of anything.   :-\  I remember flying through Landstalker with no help whatsoever, if that counts.

On the fighting game front, at a local arcade, I remember owning *EVERYONE* in Samurai Shodown II and Super Street Fighter II.  And I mean everyone.  I could routinely beat the shit out of the CPU in SS2 and get to Kuruko, which usually scared people away.   :lol

Un-ownage: My brother beat my ass in SF2 SNES 21-0, getting a perfect or two back in 1992.  He taunted me with that for years.  Then later on in 1996, I beat the shit out of him and his friend 34+ times, with more than a few perfects in Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the Saturn.  Ah, sweet revenge.

Beat Mega Man X without charging up any shots or using rapid fire. One little pellet at a time.  8)
