I've read 4 "chapters" of the book so far; outside of the prologue each chapter isn't numbered, and instead is named after the main character of that particular chapter. So while each chapter doesn't follow a linear progression, they feature overlapping details, characters, etc, yet from different perspectives.

So far I'm liking it. Clearly each chapter is slowly building up to something big; characters and countries are being established

And what better way to get my attention than a delusional, power hungry brother selling his thirteen year old sister into slavery to a barbarian king? She's gonna be his sex butler, and gets a cool gold collar; clearly these Dorthrakians understand the value and stability of currency you can't wipe your ass with.

I kinda want to skip the next few chapters until I get to the conclusion of this sex arc

I read the first two books and liked them well enough. You might consider the Steven Erikson Malazan series after youre through this one.

In Memories of Ice after he hooks up with the little sticksnare Barghast spirit dude, he starts poking around Capustan and runs into Korbal Broach and Bauchelain. After evading their demons and undead, he starts talking to them and when Broach goes after him Quick Ben slams him with 7 warrens at once. Bauchelain is impressed, but says something like "such a display was surely all you had left. You should have held back some!" And then Quick Ben slams him with another face full of warren and says, "But I did." AWESOME IS QUICK BEN!

The plot is finally taking form. Initially I thought short chapters based on various characters would be detrimental to character development, but each member of this huge cast of characters is taking shape. I'm most interested in this Jon Snow character, ie the BASTARD. Jeez he gets no respect; since when is it nice to call a bastard a bastard to his face

And I have a feeling he'll be sexing up his 9 year old half-sister sooner or later. I bet they'll have a kid, thus putting the royal inheritances out of wack

Yup, this is a pretty intriguing book. The first page has a bunch review quotes from various news papers, and one from the Denver Post says something along the lines of "the book is impulsively readable." That's very true.

My early complaint dealt with the heavy backstory that kept being brought up. Slowly it's being explained and documented, and it fits with the current stories.

I read a bunch today - almost halfway done with the book. I'm very impressed with how well paced it is. Perhaps my favorite thing is that it's so varied. Individually each story has a different level of intrigue; some character chapters feel like mystery thrillers, while others settle for a more political tale. 300+ pages in the action has finally increased; the battle description was pretty damn vivid, and made more captivating by the fact that clearly no character is safe. Anyone can die or be horribly maimed

I'm rereading the Malazan books so that they can be fresh in my head when I read Midnight Tides and Bonehunters. I'm towards the end of Memories of Ice and HOLY FUCK forgot about how awesome the siege of Capustan was. Also, that Itkovian was a FUCKING BADASS.

The Song of Ice and Fire books are pretty good but the Malazan books trump them so far IMO. Better battles, better BADASS characters. There's no one nearly as awesome as Whiskeyjack, Tool, Karsa Orlong or QUICK BEN in the Song of Ice and Fire books... maybe Tyrion, but that's it.

Three Kingdoms! Zhuge Liang is a FUCKING BADASS and more of a badass then any of the shitty characters in the series you may be reading and/or like. Plus it has Zhang Fei! He's always drunk, lol!

I picked up UGLY TRADE PB Bonehunters yesterday. Once I burn through the new Necroscope book I am gonna hit up Malazan again for a refresher. I think Deadhouse Gates is still my favorite. So fucking hardcore.

There's not a whole lot of action or badass characters in Song of Ice/Fire so far, although I just finished another awesome battle chapter. Outside of that, how do the Malazaan books differ? Are they less political for instance?

I'd go out and buy it tomorrow but I don't want to read two fantasy books at the same time lol. Unless I'm convinced otherwise

There's more overt magic and more overt... raw power I guess would be the term in the Malazan books. Mortals interacting with various gods and aspirants to be gods. There's still politics, but it's not the central focus of the books.

I still enjoy the Song of Ice and Fire books but the Malazan books just trump them.

Yup the book starts off great, then gets pretty awesome. I have less than 300 pages to go and all the buildup is leading to something epic

The ending of each character viewpoint rocked. I was never really a fan of split perspectives of a single story but I really am enjoying this series.

Totally agree. The last 100 or so pages were simply amazing, and every POV was tied up nicely. Early on I was a bit concerned about whether the characters would interest me. That fear was gone rather quickly as multiple characters began to fascinate me. From Dany to Tyrion to Jon, each character substantially grows by the end of the book. I didn't like Sansa for a long time, but even her POV got interesting at the end.

I'm going to pour over the appendix tonight, and there's a preview of the second book also.
