There's plenty of foreigners here that don't speak a lick and get on fine. I'm sure there's plenty of people in your own country like that. You don't NEED Japanese to live in Japan, as weird as that sounds. The job I'm on, the JET program, doesn't even require it.
I speak a fair amount of Japanese, but my Kanji is god-awful. Somehow despite being so sucktacular, I still manage to get on just fine with my wife, who barely speaks any English.
I even got a Japanese driver's license.
I really should study, but I'm just so damn lazy...although living with a Japanese person has increased my vocabulary quite a bit.
