It's honestly not confusing at all, but the rate (and type) of sensual input the viewer gets makes the whole scene dizzying. I had to watch it several times to figure everything out in detail. It is a very effective scene.

Also, looking at the censored version is hilarious. The added figures really do ruin the whole effect of the scene. Instead of HOLY SHIT THIS PLACE IS WEIRD, you get WHY ARE THERE PEOPLE IN BLACK COATS EVERYWHERE?

I've only seen the censored version and I do remember wondering why there were so many people in black coats standing around and watching. I just figured them for being voyeurs who got their rocks off by watching the others go at it.

The more I think about it, the more I agree with your argument that the orgy is just one big huge red herring. And you're right, it is TOO effective in that it's so dazzling and functions as such a centerpiece to the whole movie that it distracts from the main theme of jealousy and infidelity and instead leads the viewer down this whole rabbit hole of conspiracy theories about Illuminati/Freemasons/Paganism/etc.

I do recommend checking it out again. I think that more than any other Kubrick, it really is a movie that benefits greatly from going in a little older and a little wiser, not in a bookie way, but an emotional way. I don't think I could have truly appreciated the emotional textures of scenes (despite Tom's kinda flat emotional displays) before going through some of the deepest emotional periods of my life.

I never bought into the emotional aspect of the movie because I didn't really feel any chemistry/love in Cruise & Kidman's relationship in the movie. I should check it out again, but I ended up not buying the Kubrick box set like I had wanted to 'cuz I'm broke... :/

Well, check it out. Cruise is the weak link, but there's enough "there" to understand how he's SUPPOSED to feel, heh. Nicole does a purty good job, herself.

It's funny, but I remember Albert Brooks saying how Kubrick had told him Eyes Wide Shut was his attempt at doing a jealousy movie that tapped the same emotional wellspring that Brooks' own Modern Romance did, but the two movies could not be more different in the reactions they evoked in me.

Ichirou, I can understand being principled, and I think Cheebs should have been punished, too, but back moderation is just shady. It was in the past, they decided not to do anything, maybe they will next time. Okay, I will totally drop the Cheebs thing, but one request that actually is important to me (and I think lyte edge mentioned it as well), is adding some kind of option that'll let us disable images in the forum if we want to. There's some stuff going on at work (let's just say that due to severe budget cuts, all the folks in my position are getting reviewed) and the last thing I want is to stumble across some NSFW stuff while I'm at the office.

It can't be that hard. I mean, Mupepe's forum had an option for it, and Opa-Ages doesn't even let you view images unless you're logged in.

That would be enough, really. I just want a way to view the forum without having to view images. It would be a good option to have for everyone who browses the forum at work.

Like I said, the main reason I was so pissed off before and decided to leave the forum was because synbios told me he was targetting me with the NSFW stuff so I would get in trouble at work. :/
