Cataloguing DVDs...what's the best way?

I've decided that since I own like 500 DVDs, it's about time I started to catalogue all the stuff I have so I don't lose track of it or buy stuff I already own (this is especially important since I'm living overseas - if I see something on sale, I'll buy it, have it shipped to my US address, and then later on forget I already bought it and buy it again!).  There used to be a website called Guzzlefish that let you catalogue all your stuff online.  The problem is that some of the DVDs I own didn't show up on the site (some were regular US DVDs, others were weird R2 versions from Italy or South Korea).  I checked and Guzzlefish doesn't exist anymore.  I'm wondering if there's a decent place to keep your DVDs catalogued so you can check and update your list from wherever you're at, or if I should just open a Word document and catalogue them manually.  Any suggestions?

Yeah, that's what I figured.  I used to have most of my DVDs catalogued...I went through them all and did them in MLA format in a Word file but then the computer crashed while I was overseas and everything got deleted.

I don't even know anymore. I've gotten used to it now, but I just remember they changed the layout of the site a while back and I didn't like the change. It's still pretty great.

I know they have a shitload of editions for each DVD, though. Like each region and discontinued editions and the like.

I use DVD Aficionado, I like it. They will add titles if you submit them. They used to, at least.

The problem is that you used to be able to type in as many entries as you want in your search and add like 10 flicks at once. Now you can only search one flick at a time.

I think it's all Amazon-based.

My cousin has some kind of software for his PC, like a virtual bookshelf for various forms of media. I think you can use a Palm or whatever and actually scan in barcodes to get it done, and then it throws your shit online.

I don't understand the point of owning so many DVDs, but - hey! - maybe I'm just nuts.  I own a few (like 30 or so) movies and films that all have a reason for being in my library - either for constant viewing or their technical merits.  But there are a ton of great movies I don't own and won't, because I know I won't watch them all the time and if I have a hankerin' for one, I'll just watch it on XBL or rent it.

Avoid dvdaf. It used to be good but is useless now. It's layout in how limited amount of dvds can be shown per page and the lengthy time it takes to add a movie makes it hard to use. I used to use it before it upgraded then switched to dvdspot.

And I'd have to watch a movie more than twice to own it.  Likelihood is if I watch it again, it'll be years later, when there's a better transfer, commentary or what have you.  There are too many good films and movies I have not seen to waste time and money on one that I might watch twice within a decade, in my humble opinion.

People in New York? I dunno. Scale it to 3 views in a lifetime if that helps for you.

I was already 100 flicks in by the time they fucked themselves up, now I'm stuck forever  :'(

Yeah, but we're talking about the lifetime of the format - not your lifetime.  One could argue in ten years, we'll have something even better than BRD or HDDVD.  In that span, I'm not going to watch, say, Schindler's List twice.  I mean, if you believe you're going to watch a movie multiple times - go for the big purchase.  Or heck, if you have the disposable income and you like collecting them, go for it.  I'm not discrediting your purchases.  But with the advent of Netflix and online rentals, I personally find it real hard to invest much, if anything, on DVD collections.  The last movie I purchased was Pan's Labyrinth, which I've already seen three times.  The next DVD I'll get will be a gift - Flash Gordon: Savior of the Universe Edition, so I can finally throw out my bootleg (the R1 original has been long out of print) and added to the fact that I've probably viewed that movie like four or five times within the past two years.

Well, I started buying them like 6 years ago. And my PS3 upscales. So I'm good.

My friends were over the other day and we wanted to watch a movie. It was nice to have 15 comedies and a dozen action movies to choose from, instead of whatever 2 or 3 DVDs I had on hand from NetFlix. And since I have so many, I was able to watch a movie I hadn't seen in a year and a half or so. Same deal when my girlfriend is over, we can just poke around and pull something off the shelf, maybe I haven't even seen it yet.

If I was paying $20-25 each for them there's no way I'd have as many as I do. There are only a handful of movies that I went out of my way to buy (hello Blade Runner).
