I saw the Wings of Hominase (I'm probably spelling it wrong) Blu-ray at the Virgin Megastore. The packaging and cover art was fantastic.

It's a NA release, but unfortunately Bandai Visual USA still uses their Japanese price structure here.

From what I've heard from people you have to play the first one to 'get' references in the prequel. And also the battle system in the first isn't as good, so it is a good idea to get it out of the way first.
