the next big ds game: professor layton
« on: January 03, 2008, 09:37:28 AM »

it's like having the back of a box of sugary cereal on your nintendo ds! only $29.99! yes, it's all the puzzles you remember from 'fun' moments of elementary school, only they've been dumbed down a little, because school was a gradually unfolding revelation of your mental inferiority, and nintendo ds is about feeling GOOD. it comes with j-gaf's highest recommendations -- and hey, if you'll play phoenix wright, your dumb ass will probably play anything!

I actually am looking forward to P. Layton.  I love puzzle games and this will be one, one with super-high production values and a shitload of nifty puzzles.
Yes please.  If it helps, consider it the anti-Hotel Dusk.

the bad thing about hotel dusk is that there was so much text but the STORY WAS SHIT

i can't believe the gaffers defending that game. someone said that hotel dusk's story is on par with THE AVERAGE BOOK

Do you have any sort of reading comprehension whatsoever, Habib?

it's like having the back of a box of sugary cereal on your nintendo ds! only $29.99! yes, it's all the puzzles you remember from 'fun' moments of elementary school, only they've been dumbed down a little, because school was a gradually unfolding revelation of your mental inferiority, and nintendo ds is about feeling GOOD. it comes with j-gaf's highest recommendations -- and hey, if you'll play phoenix wright, your dumb ass will probably play anything!

That sounds like a pro-Nintendo statement if I've ever read one.

actually corny, that's more of an anti you statement than an anti nintendo statement. 'you' plural, indicating ds fans generally, lest you take this as an invitation au e-beouf. ok, that was kind of an anti 'you' singular statement

i can't even blame gaf for my purchase of hotel dusk -- the thing is that i liked trace memory. at least for its first enjoyably puzzly two-thirds. at the end it turns into hotel dusk. IT WAS A WARNING, AND I HEEDED IT NOT

I kind of expected Layton to have slightly more clever puzzles than the old get the animals across the river... but if that's the level of the game, then I don't think I'm nearly as interested, even if I'm somewhat of a Level-5 fan.

I kinda like PW although I'm afraid its gonna get stale somewhere in the middle of the second game.

Those puzzles though, they remind me of the stupid logic questions you get asked in job interviews. Is the egg drop question going to be on there?

I loved Phoenix Wright, all 3 of them. The gameplay was kind of linear, what there was of it, but I love my courtroom dramas like law and order, and I thought the characters all had enough likable personality to make it through.

It probably would have better been suited to a tv show, or comic book or something, but I don't know if I would have enjoyed it as much then.

I read this thread this morning, Hotel Dusk hate and all, and what do I do?  I go out and buy Trace Memory, a game that's easily 10 times worse than Hotel Dusk.  Don't know why I got it exactly.  I certainly wasn't looking for it.  It was just sitting there in the used bin for 7 bucks.   I played it for about 15 minutes before getting totally bored with it all.

Bah.  Time to try out Phantom Hourglass.

I'm not too far into it but so far it feels VERY simple.  Maybe too much so.  I've been pretty much out of the loop when it came to Phantom Hourglass so I knew next to nothing about it before going in so I was a little surprised to find that all the controls were done with the stylis.  Because of that and the way the world is designed, if feels incredibly casual and not really like a normal Zelda game at all....which, in a way, is a good thing 'cause after Twilight Princess I think I got my fill of the normal Zelda templet for the next 15 years.  No desire to go back there.

Phantom Hourglass is like a Zelda game for your mother.  That's probably the best way to describe it so far.

People keep telling me to play these adventure games on the DS but I can't get into them.

Phoenix Wright - boring
Hotel Dusk - Boring
Professor Layton (had the chance to play the Japanese version with someone translating) - BORING (pick right hate?  WTF.)

I mean, if I was 29 and still living with my mother, I might find this kind of fiction interesting - but I don't live with my mother (go jobs) and this fiction seems to be aimed at a 10-12 yr old.

Give me something with a strong sense of humor (and I know some might argue with me that PW does have that... but it doesn't) or something that actually tries to appeal to someone in their late teens - at the least.

Fuck, just give Full Throttle on the DS.  Is that so much to ask?

I will admit PW isn't that funny. However, it's still fun to me because of the cases. It's not that great of an adventure game.

I'd honestly take Sam and Max or Grim Fandango but it'd never happen.

This game is one big puzzle book. You can get the same enjoyment from a $3 magazine - the puzzles are probably harder too. Whatever, I'll play through it on a flight or trip. Once you beat it, that's it. The downloadable puzzles are one-time things that dont affect anything in the main game.

The hints they give you (cost 1 coin each) suck fucking ass too.
