Jerry Rice Calls Randy Moss Comments a 'Slap in the Face, But That's Typical of Randy'
Posted Jan 3rd 2008 7:14AM by Michael David Smith
Filed under: 49ers, Patriots, Boston, San Francisco, The Word

Patriots wide receiver Randy Moss broke the all-time single-season receiving touchdowns record of Jerry Rice on Saturday, and after the game, Moss told reporters this:

"I don't think me breaking Jerry Rice's record is special," Moss said. "I think shutting you guys up is what made it special, all the negativity, all my critics."

Rice knows a thing or two about breaking records, and when he broke the records of the great receivers who came before him, he always showed respect for those receivers. So how did Rice feel about Moss saying breaking his record wasn't special? On a radio interview Wednesday, Rice said, "I's almost like a little slap in the face, but that's typical of Randy Moss."

Ouch. As great a player as Moss is, he's always lacked Rice's work ethic, both on the field and during the off-season, and he's always lacked Rice's classy, dignified approach to the game. Rice is right to say what he said about Moss.

Moss is a giant douche.

Someone posted in comments that Rice's record also occurred during a 12-game season, but I don't remember it and can't find the stats anywhere because my google-fu is sucking right now. Can anyone verify?

Yea, that's right. I didn't know that until I looked it up, either.

We already knew Moss was a douche, but the guy can play when he wants to.

"When he wants to" being the key phrase there. He's an amazing player and he's had a great season, but he doesn't have the heart of a champion (lol cliche). The Jordans of the sports world worked tirelessly to maintain their dominance; they never basked in the praise they received, and instead found various ways (however trivial) to motivate themselves to reach higher achievements. While all the negative coverage Moss has received definitely motivates him to succeed, it hasn't seemed to transform him into the dedicated worker that he could have been. Instead he prefers to throw the crowd a bone here or there, as if to say "see, you're wrong"...then go back to his lazy ways.

First off, comparing Moss to Carter is ridiculous and just as big affront to Moss as this 'slam' was to Rice.

Second off, Rice ALWAYS has been a bitcher and moaner about not getting enough respect, so as a sports fan it's hard to feel sorry for him.  Could Moss have kissed his ass?  Sure, he probably should have.  But my real problem with that comment was his slam on the press 'making them shut up.'

Moss, it would hold a LOT more water if you had made the press shut up when you were being a prissy little bitch in Oakland.  There's a reason you were traded for a fourth round pick buddy, and it wasn't because you were a consumate professional.

Let it be said that although Rice often pissed and moaned, he was still ALWAYS a professional.  Hell, when he was in Oakland he busted his ass to come back from injury after injury.  He's the best wide receiver ever to play, and one of the best football players of all time.

jerry rice is the best at his position hands down

just like barry sanders is the best running back hands down, there's just nothing else to be said.

and like my brother says, jerry rice was one of those guys who could catch the ball right in the middle knowing that some 250lb back is going to completely destroy his ass, he'd work his ass off all the time, and ALWAYS performed.  a bad game from rice was like a cold day in hell.

moss is fucking good, attitude or whatever just makes him inconsistent.

Actually, I could say a lot, but I'll just say "Jim Brown."

There is no position where there is a more clear cut 'best' than Jerry Rice.  You can only argue second best.

You most certainly can argue running back, qb, or every other position in the game.

If Moss wanted to shutup the press then he would have been graceful and respectful after breaking the record.  By saying what he said he just gave the press more to talk about it. Moss doesn't really get it. He probably won't be able to break the career records as well, because he is inconsistent and mentally inept. You need longeviety and consistency for career records.

And Rice did bitch when he was younger, at least for big contracts. He was a hard worker though and perfected release off the line and route running.

Moss will likely break Rice's career TD record but will not touch his yardage record. Rice was still getting 1000+ yards at the age of forty. I don't see Moss playing at that age let alone excelling. However, with the exception of last season, he has been an outstanding receiver since his rookie season. He really hasn't been all that inconsistent etiolate.

Bitched when he was older too, for bigger contracts with the 49ers.  Bitched his way right out of town.

#2 - Prost actually said something I agree with. Barry Sanders being the greatest RB of all time.

Unitas and maybe Staubach should be in the top five. It's hard to compare stats as the eras were so different. Unitas played in an era where quarterbacks completed only about 50% of their passes. And the average quarterback threw as many interceptions as touchdowns. And some seasons they actually threw more picks than touchdowns.

edit:
Namath? No way. One Superbowl does not a career make. He had a good career. But that's all it was; good.

Actually, that's typical Jerry Rice too.  WTF, no one ever calls him on his egotistical bullshit.  I've never seen a more needy super-duper star than Jerry Rice, and he's always been like that.  I guess it's true that all receivers are batshit insane.

Oh, and lol @ Favre being unquestionably the best QB to play.  3 mvps in a row (although one was shared) are not enough to make up for only 1 Super Bowl.  Not that the latter is Favre's fault, that's just the way history will judge it.  If he won this year, well, you'd have to consider it at least until Brady retires (assuming he can continue what he did this year.)

QB's have definitely evolved since the 70's, and if you pay attention they are evolving even now.  Never have completion percentages been higher for the greats with the same record yardage and TDs, while throwing much less INTs.  Favre, to his credit, did evolve this year and protected the ball better.

Quarterbacks haven't changed so much as football has changed. Rule changes made it more difficult for defenses to slow the progress of receivers; there have been many rules created to protect the QB; and offensive lines were constructed with the passing game in mind instead of the running game.

Come on Dark! Moon, Namath, and Archie Manning are no even in the discussion.

Right, you put it better than I did.  I meant more that the numbers which QBs are measured by are changing.  The number of turnovers or completion percentages considered good or all-pro level in the mid 80s are low end stats now.  So, you can't purely look at the numbers, but when you see completion percentages of 70%+ I think you have to recognize that.

So to me, Brady and Manning (Peyton lol) are in the discussion.  So is Favre and Marino.

To argue that Namath or Archie Manning even belong in the same zip code that this discussion is taking place is laughable.  There is no argument, at all.

Moon, maybe he can take a bus and drive past the meeting, he threw for a shitton of yards everywhere and had longevity to boot.

My personal list happens to include everyone you listed.  Well, tbh I don't know a ton about Unitas and I know his stats don't hold up, but I feel there likely is a QB in the list that I haven't seen play.  You have to throw Elway onto your list as well.

So, finally, its:

Montana
Marino
Favre
Elway
Manning
Brady
And I guess Unitas

In some order.

No discussion.

I agree with this.  You have to consider that Elway made it to three Super Bowls in the 80's compared to just one for Marino.

Elway had a ton of yards and stats too, I think they are both in the discussion but Elway had more personal sucess.
