After you finish FFXII...
« on: January 05, 2008, 02:35:48 PM »
Do you have the option of starting a new game with all of your previous equipment, levels, LBP (sort of like a New Game+)?

Thanks in advance. No spoilers please. :)

I actually liked FF9 a lot, if they sped up battle loading it would be a close second after FF8 in my PERSONAL list of good FF games.

It wasn't just the loading, every battle command took ages to execute too. And I seem to remember the ATB being obnoxiously slow until 1/3 of the way through the game.

Still one of my faves though.

Adjust the battle speed in the config menu?

Shit's slow no matter how you slice it. Turning up battle speed is the first thing I do in any FF.

It's just the one-on-one battles they make you fight at certain points in the story.  ATB speed in regular 4-char party battles is fine; they really should've had the speed automatically adjust to fit the number of characters involved.

ff9 is like trudging through molasses with the loading and the battle system

It's manageable once you autohaste every character.

And the PS3 doesn't make it any faster.  I popped it in and there doesn't seem to be any sort of improvement.

Yeah, it's not just the loading. There's a noticeable delay between choosing the command and it actually happening.

Yeah, it's not just the loading. There's a noticeable delay between choosing the command and it actually happening.

That's not a technical issue, it's part of the battle system.  FF5 and 6 had the same delay, it's meant to approximate a turn-based system where you have to think ahead a bit and perhaps queue spells in advance, etc.  The difference is that in FF9, the animations are longer, and since (as in all FFs before X-2) only one animation can play at a time, any spells set to go off during an animation won't actually go off until it's over.  So although the delay feature itself is exactly the same in 5, 6, and 9, it might feel different in 9 than the others because of how it interacts with other aspects of the battle system and presentation.

Personally, I still like the delay; setting up spells to go off at just the right time adds a bit more strategy and tension (my favorite battle was vs. Trance Kuja where you had to anticipate when his Reflect would wear off, and time your own Reflects to keep yourself covered).     Can't stand the load times though.
