Which of the Salo four do you most identify with?
« on: January 06, 2008, 04:02:52 AM »

(and no, you don't want to know what they are leering at)

I have to go with either The Duke (the actor that plays him is also in Caligula) or The Magistrate.  The Magistrate is arguably the most depraved of the four, and the rapings he delivers are generally the most memorable.  He also pops out a kids eye with a knife.

The Duke is the dude in Caligula involved in this exchange:

Caligula:  I hear you like little boys
The Duke:  No, sir, BIG boys!

But Salo teaches us that he does like little boys :(

There's a really creepy scene where the four are picking out the boys to take to the mansion, and The Magistrate recognizes one of the boys as the son of one of the judges that worked for him.  The Magistrate is like "Oh, I liked your dad.  I can't promise that I will be the one to deflower you, though.  That will be decided later."  And the poor kid just starts crying :(   The whole movie is soul crushing.

Here is The President with a character that I like to refer to as Demi.

Notice how The President leers.  There is plenty of leering to be had in this movie.

I refer to this charming lad as Eraserhead Arvie.  He is later on married, forced to publicly have sex with a young girl, and then severely sodomized by The Magistrate.

No shame admitting my piracy here--The notorious Criterion edition goes for between 600-1000 dollars, one of the rarest DVDs on earth.  And the transfer isn't even good.  It has a nasty green tint.

Also:

I just hit the first Circle.  The Circle of Manias. After this, there's the Circle of Shit, and finally The Circle of Blood.  Good times!

Pier Paolo Pasolini is probably in my top 20 or so directors.  I'm not quite sure where I heard of him directly.  I probably heard of Salo first, and then while watching his back catalog, which is mostly available, realized that he was a pretty awesome director that made flicks with quite a bit of depth.

His movie Teorema was the direct inspiration for Takashi Miike's Visitor Q, but make no mistake, he is not really a gross out director.  he was in it for the art.

He was murdered less than a week after Salo was first shown, by his 17 year old "boyfriend" (more recent accounts seem to shy away from the boyfriend label.  His murder investigation was recently reopened after like 20 years).  He ran him over in a car.  Then backed up.  And ran over him again.  And again.  And so on.

Salo is shit....no pun intended.  Just an awful movie, and I'm not even talking about the shock value of it all.  I went into expecting it to be disgusted, but I ended up laughing at the ridiculousness of it all and then finally bored out of my mind.  At least a movie like Pink Flamingos is entertaining.

You went in for the wrong reasons.  You were expecting Pink Flamingos and you got an art film.  It's not a gross out movie.  Aside from the shit stuff, it's not even that explicit.  There's an adequate amount of nudity, but that's about it.  If you are going in for shocks, you will be disappointed.  If you go in to actually see the movie, and give a fuck about the director, his themes, and the subject matter, you'll come out disgusted and hating everyone.  Don't blame the movie because you expected Bad Taste and got, well, a fucking Pasolini movie.  That's not really that fair, is it?

DVD collectors are weird.  I sold Ghost Story, a movie you wouldn't think people would be clamoring to obtain, for about $45 a couple of years ago when it went out of print.  Then, of course, a few months later it was reprinted.  None of this stuff stays out of print forever, eventually even the most obscure titles will see some sort of distribution or repressing.  If there is a dollar to be made off of it, it'll get out there.

Salo has been out of print for like a decade.  Crit said they had the rights early last year, but they haven't released it.  I'm guessing when they do, it will be a high end 60 buck release, because they KNOW people want it.  Better than reheating the shitty Kurosawa movies for a 5th time.

Well, that's better than $600.  Some of the Criterion stuff is ridiculously overpriced to begin with.

The MST3K movie goes for quite a bit, too, because they lost the rights to This Island Earth.  I have a 2-disc set called MST3K The Essentials, which I ordered from the official site because it came with a bonus disc of shorts which have never been released in any of the sets.  I can't find pricing for it anywhere, and I know it was short run - the only way you could get it was through the site.

I'm not sure I'd buy it for more than 30 or 40.  It is a good movie and all, but the supplemental features will have to do the selling, since lord knows I can't sit through the feature ever again.  It makes me feel gross and dirty, and the fact that it is well made makes it even grosser and dirtier.  If this movie was legitimately terrible, it would be Caligula hilarious; as it is, it kinda makes me ill.
