What do you want to see in the next generation of portables?
« on: January 07, 2008, 04:33:20 PM »
PSP2:
-480p screen resolution. Make the machine capable of emulating PS2 games.
-Introduce dual analogue sticks/nubs.
-Analogue triggers? Possible?
-Make solid-state drives a standard in the machine (8 or 16 GB).
-Introduce a PSP store that's similar to Steam. Give us the ability to purchase and download games, and have it linked to our account.
-Bluetooth.

DS2:
-Widescreen displays (both touch screen?).
-Add analogue sticks/nubs.
-Make the machine at least GameCube level in terms of specs.
-Implement  Wii OS and channels.

DS2: "Virtual Handheld", and make the system's tech analogous to the GC's.

I really hope both companies mix it up ALOT before even considering another release of a new handheld - and I hope the end result is something we cant even come close to imagining.

Pretty much like the Wii and DS ended up being...

yeeeaaah, no.

Could you imagine the Wii would be what it was before it was revealed?

I couldn't guess/imagine the NDS or the Wii before they were released - however mostly everyone could have guessed most of what ended up being the X360 and PS3.

i couldn't imagine how janky and awful it was, that's for sure

the ds? sure i could. a touch screen is a (useless) no-brainer. and it still has a shit library.

PSP2
Dual analog
Better analog stick a la Neo Geo Pocket color
Able to play downloadable PS2 games.  (That's if SCE decides to allows this via PS3)
Solid state flash memory

DS
Able to buy move and buy VC games.
Wii-like interace.
Removal of friend codes, dammit.
Slicker form factor.

I don't know about Nintendo, but I want the next PSP to be able to play all PS2 games right out of the box, be it in the form of downloadable games or your own titles, which you can transfer to the PSP2 via the PS3.  Dual analog is a must.

I'd love to see Microsoft enter the portable market with a handheld that's on par with the original Xbox and uses the same Live system.  Portable online Halo :bow

This will NEVER happen, but I would fucking LOVE IT if a major online game got a portable version that was exactly the same as its console counterpart (apart from graphics, of course) and could be played with the console version online.

I want to listen to mp3s while I play emulators.

There was a plug-in for the hacked PSP that allowed you to listen to MP3s at any time, be it emulators or actual PSP games, but I don't know if it was ever updated for the newer hacked firmware updates.

Dual analog (I think this is a given and Sony knows it) AND L2/R2 buttons

OLED screen

Built-in SS memory, even if it's just 4 GB to keep the price down, keep the mem stick slot (I'd bet games will be sold on mem sticks in the next version of PSP)

Wi-fi AND Bluetooth, can be used as a spare PS3 controller/remote in a pinch - take it to a friend's house and wirelessly transfer your game saves/share maps/RB songs temporarily/etc.  Could also have some of the interfunctionality with PS3 games (limited, don't shit yourselves - say viewing the playlist on Madden) that was promised with PSP1 but won't ever happen

PSN games would come with PSP versions when you download so you can be bored by fl0w on the go

here me out here before you explode - touch screen, but it would NEVER be used for game control, EVER.  It would instead be used for virtual keyboard/keypad/mouse simulation, web browsing - pc-type input, basically.

full power of the ps2 + some, downloadable ps2 games (and i think that is totally doable, and probably planned)

Regarding PSP 2, I just hope they keep the UMD slot for backwards compatibility with the previous PSP.

All I want is for the next gen portables to be more durable.  I'm not talking about scratches, I want the housing built like a tank (ie: gameboy, game gear, etc).  The first thing I said when I unpacked my DS Lite for the first time was, "Wow, it looks delicate".  It turns out it was.  After only one month of ownership the top lid has a curve to it, visible gaps formed all around the bottom half at the seam, the left side of the hinge is loose and can be pulled up a good few milimeters, and last but not least:  the bottom screen is noticably dimmer w/ a yellowish cigarette-like tint to it.

DS2:

-Smaller, if possible
-Built in internet browser; shouldn't have to pay for that shit
-Nintendo Messenger type service like AIM
-Slightly better graphics I guess - innovation is more important anyway
-Durable enough to also work as a scale, allowing you to weight yourself on the go
-Better speaks/mic
-Hybrid battery that can charge from sunlight

PSP2:
-lol no one cares

I say, to hell with 3D. They should just focus on making a really small high-resolution screen and some kickass 2D hardware. I want nothing Vanillaware-looking games.

Yeah, one thing I really liked about the GBA was its 2D games.  To some extent, I wish handhelds stayed that way (but with better sound that GBA).

it's a longshot but I really hope they go with a system where all games are downloaded online or in a store kiosk (<1GB) and you can play the game as long as you keep the little flash cart you bought for it in the system (kind of like how PS3 lets you install games).  that way you'd have low load times, more than enough data for most games, and much better battery times then a disk based system.  it'd have to have a decently sized HDD (around 20 GB min.) but that's much easier for publishers and whatnot plus the store kiosk downloading would keep developers from releasing broken games and patching it later.  I'd imagine that the online downloads would require you to put in the barcode of the flash cart but I doubt that Nintendo or Sony would care if they saw the same ID number used a few times by different people.  As long as they make the flash cart impossible to pirate.

User-friendly to pirate software.

In fact, that feature should be on the front of the box.

How about no more generations.
That way when FFIV is remade for the third time on the DS, we can really start to feel loved.

original 2d action games. they're why i played lots of gba and now play relatively little psp and ds. of course i'd rather play this stuff on consoles, but developers rarely oblige me
